Some years ago I remember a rust proofer which you just diluted it with water and put your various nuts and bolts in it overnight. Or just painted it on. Can anyone remember it's name I think it was green in colour.

Or Jenolite (I think that is how you spell it)

 

Most of these kind of products are based on phosphoric acid with wetting agents added as are self etching primers for steel.

Could be Naval Jelly, remember using that years ago, probably known by another name now, it was a phosphoric solution washed off with water.
