leesjeep
Looking for a little help here, I have the chance to buy what the description says is a 1942 welbike with the XXE code stamped on, there are many parts missing, tank, seats , correct handle bars, the frame is all there and what appears to be original engine, being no expert on welbikes ( just always wanted to own one! ) I don't want to spend hard earned cash on what might not turn out to be genuine, here are some pictures. thanks lee Edited July 26, 2016 by leesjeep error

Ron
Well it looks like the real thing. Is that repro tanks and expansion box in the picture and is that a spare Autocycle engine with ally expansion box. There should be a faint number on the front of the steering stem. Unfortunately I'll be away from my computer for a week now. Ron
leesjeep
Thanks ron, not sure about the tanks, he just said spare parts included, do you think the Villiers junior on the frame is from a autocycle? many thanks
Ron
No! XXE engines were for Welbikes only. Autocycles had XXA and other numbers. Your engine number matches the contract plate S1946 which were MK2 machines ordered on 27/12/42 and completed in July43. We can easily work out your census number, but you need to check the frame number. There were some small differences to the MK2 over the MK1 (like mine). The most noticeable being the fitting of a rear mudguard. There were also some small changes at the front which meant a different shape at the rear of the petrol tanks. The tanks in your picture look like MK 2 (I think I can also see the steel expansion box). All these parts are available from http://www.welbikeuk.com/about.php and others. There are books 'Welbike to Corgi' by Peter Miller (google) or Rob Van Meel's new book 'Excelsior Welbike'. (I bought Rob's book at the W&P show last week) He also prints the handbook and parts list. http://www.robvanmeel.nl/ I saw one Welbike at W&P for sale at 11,000 Euros. I'm typing this at 3am as I'm off to the Chunnel soon (hopefully) so away from my pooter for a week. Ron
Chris Hall
If the price is right, buy it now. If not, I'll bet someone else will have it including me. i wouldn't be put off by the missing parts, as mentioned they may be there. As long as the price matches the condition then it's a winner in my opinion
leesjeep
does anybody know if you brought a welbike from Europe, would you have to pay any import duty on getting into the uk?
Hoseman
Yes, I think so now we are not in EU. Go on the Government website and find out. Or speak to an import company for advice. I've only ever bought outside UK, so have paid import tax and of course the dreaded VAT. Vat is 20% and depending on your description of goods (agricultural parts seems cheaper!) @1.7% BUT a trip over there on a jollies, and the 'bits' scattered about inside your car on way back might be the easier option!:cool2:
Ron
We won't be leaving the EU for up to two years. So it could be parcelled up like anything else within the EU and sent without any customs declaration. You can't register a Welbike for the road in UK so no farting about with DVLA or HMRC nova declaration. Make sure there are no oil or petrol fumes and just call it motorcycle parts for shipping. I've sent and received parts from all round the world and it's easy within EU. Ron
Degsy
We are still in the EU, the withdrawal process has not even started yet so EU rules still apply.
Hoseman
Ok, I just wasn't sure, you know how this government works, make it up as they go along! Still a good excuse for a jolly over the water!
