tcw99 Posted April 4, 2016 Share Posted April 4, 2016 Hi Im restoring an Allis Chalmers 645 4 wheel loader serial number 6435 B and WD number 00FU35 Im seeking some information on the british army specific build of these loaders. I have a PDF from US army of their depot service manual but the british version differs in engine - its got a Leyland (AEC) AV505 rather than Allis Chalmers own diesel and has a different air over hydraulic braking system. Does anyone know where I might get a PDF or copy of the British Army Operators/Service manual? Also seeking an AV505 manual for the engine - serial number AV505 5C 5573 A7502 - these were used in several variants of Leyland HGV vehicles. I used to do a lot of repair work on these Army versions, both Royal Engineers and local ranges had them. Could tell a few tales of jobs done on them too. If I recall, the workshop manual was the US version and we had a supplement for the AV505 engine. Sadly I do not have any manuals for them. Have you checked its service history? ploughman Posted April 4, 2016 Share Posted April 4, 2016 RE Airfield Squadrons would have had an allocation of about 6 - 8 in each sqn, with some machines being retained in the UK, with the balance being at their designated airfield in BAOR. The BAOR machines would have been stored on site in preservation bags. The units would have been 50, 51, 52 and 53 sqns. Maidstone, Ripon, Perham Down Tidworth and Waterbeach Cambridge. tcw99 Posted November 7, 2016 Author Share Posted November 7, 2016 Considerable progress in restoration to report Now have working brakes , a fair task as had to strip off reduction hubs to get to brake drums and the seized pistons! Make up all new brake lines and overhaul the master cylinder and air pac. Been out and done a bit of work using winch (with a new rope) to pull over a large dead tree. Mick Norton Posted August 27, 2023 Share Posted August 27, 2023 The Allis Chalmers brought reliability to the range of RE shovel loaders after the Gainsborough, Bray and Michigan variants. I remember how successful the armoured Allis was in N Ireland, a great tool. Did you ever source a handbook? I've been trying to establish bucket dump height for the Allis Chalmers.
