A lot of the time they used frozen lakes for landing strips. Ice starts to melt and planes get stranded.

Think it happened to a load of heinkel111s in Norway during the war, whole lot sank!

So, anybody going to get those Heinkels?

Think they have one up already, few years ago.

The famous one is the Lockheed P38 squadron lost its bearings from USA to Scotland and forced landed on an ice drift.

Crew rescued and planes left to be recovered at later date. Later date and snow storm had covered the lot so left.

One recovered after years of investigation and excavation. Made a book bout it all, but cant find it. Brilliant read and reference. rest of planes still there.

Recovered one is being restored and maybe flying again.....Going mad now trying to think of book title!!!!!:nut:

Book is by David Hayes, the lost squadron.

Airplane is Glacier Girl and airborne some years now.

The B-17 near it they found was crushed by the snow.

P38 was crushed by ice also, what's flying now is probably the data plate plus 90% new parts.

Heck of a story, though!
