andym
When I dismantled the Abbot's engine filter housing for cleaning, it had originally been put together with some sort of green coloured sealant that has dried to a consistency somewhere between paint and putty. Any suggestions on what it might be? I've never come across anything of that colour before! Andy
ChasSomT.
Andy, I seem to remember Green Hermatite from about 30 years ago, I don't know if that helps 'Chas.'
andym
I was wondering that, I can remember yellow and red ... Andy
gazzaw
Sounds like green hermetite that stayed pliable instead of hard and brittle like the red stuff. We tended to use hylomar as it had better oil/fluid resistance than the green H
Willyslancs
we used hylomar too at TVR ...........
Rangie
Yup, green Hemetite. It's the thinnest of the bunch and used for closest tolerance fitting. Alec.
andym
Thanks all! Having checked, there was Gold Hermetite (non-setting), Red Hermetite (semi-setting) and Green Hermetite (setting). I hadn't come across the Green version before. Andy
Rangie
The green can be an absolute pig to get to bits if there are lips/flanges (oooh err missus) involved! It sets like stone and can be a pain to scrape off. A light waft with the burning torch to crack the green sealant often works...... I often reassemble with a light wipe of red if there's a chance it has to come to bits again.... Alec.
