  1. Absolutely correct Mike, I quoted the caption from the Stentor engine at a Scottish museum without reading it twice. It would appear that they were also wrong about the make up of HTP.
  2. Is there an alternative exit from a Stolly should the roof hatches become obstructed?
  3. Yes, they were excellent and managed to avoid those idiotic computer generated simulations that seem to blight most documentaries these days. Speak to any of the ground crew who had to service the Blue Steel stand off missile and I doubt any will rave about the design, particularly the HTP oxidiser:shake: Quote:Avro Blue Steel air-launched nuclear missiles were carried by Avro Vulcans and Handley Page Victor bombers. One round wold be carried by each aircraft. The fuel used by the Stentor engine was High Test Peroxide (HTP), comprising a lethal combination of Hydrogen Peroxide and other assorted chemicals. Special suits had to be worn by the handling personnel when fuelling the Blue Steel because HTP would burn way any organic material it came into contact with.
  4. Are you saying Andi damaged the Scammell:confused: We normally leave that to Andy F.
  5. From Mike's post a couple of weeks ago, and yes, it is Antar. It both seals the exposed end of the hub and locates the outer wheel adaptor in the correct position.
  6. Is it the bit we were discussing a couple of weeks ago?:-D
  7. Here you go: http://images.easyart.com/i/prints/rw/lg/9/1/Gordon-Murray-Trumpton-Fire-Brigade-91986.jpg
  8. Yes, I have an ex RAF S26 which is a dual purpose ballast/5th wheel tractor which was used for towing radar trailers. I wanted to convert it to a civilian tractor but am now in 2 minds; it looks horrible in green and I may even sell it to buy something different. I tried to buy the Crusader on post 8 & 12 of the Crusader section on two occasions but failed. We never drove the Explorer at the Griffin Trust so had no idea about the state of the transmission. Mike
  9. Hi Shawn, just realised who you are - you own the 30 ton Constructor and have a commercial repair facility at Macclesfield. We did some sort of deal on ebay if I remember correctly??? Some years ago Alan Walker and I spent a day at the Griffin Trust getting the petrol engine in the Explorer running; it was actually siezed when we got there but responded to some TLC, a generous shot of diesel down each bore, a new float and a set of plugs. Mike
  10. Mike, if the crane is used for lifting in the stowed position the rope runs over the usual fixed guide and bends it. Fitting the extra pulley would avoid this but I suspect the vehicle would have to be used without the spare wheel carrier. If it was ex RAF I would have expected to see a vacuum tank just inboard of the O/S rear wheels, but this may have been removed. Has it got a vacuum guage in the cab?
  11. Purely from a layman's perspective, what exactly are the terms of reference for 280 extra heavy recovery vehicles costing up to £1m each? I am sure that generations of recovery mechanics have had great fun in training recovering tanks that have been thrown into muddy lakes, but does that happen in reality? I am assuming that an 8x8 HET can drop it's trailer, reach and recover most tanks and that a modern 6x6 vehicle similar to the Foden could cope with most other breakdown/recovery/workshop crane tasks. In the UK I regularly see the Fodens called out to recover broken down Lend Ravers which seems to be like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut; do we not have any medium recovery vehicles such as the MJs any more?
  12. That's better, now combine it with the working time directive and you have the full picture. The big problem now is that if you work 5 days during the week in any paid employment you then need to fit in at least a 24 hour continuous weekly rest if driving a laden LGV at the weekend, even if only transporting your own horse/MV etc. Any work related activity such as filling in a time sheet, cleaning your truck etc is classed as an interruption of a weekly rest.:argh:
  13. Shawn you have an industrial engine which is designed to run at a constant rpm for generator/compressor/pump use. Your local diesel specialist will be able to modify the governor for all speed automotive use. Mike
  14. With respect Lee, the info on that site is about 3 years out of date. All the break and rest requirements have changed.
  15. Correct, and the anti ship mines were codenamed vegetables.
  16. Looks like an ex RE one with the chassis lengthened for some kind of rig.
  17. Look out for the Polish mosquitoes if you are near to lakes or waterways, their bites can be horrendous if they take a liking to you.:shake: Here is a good phrase to start you off, spelt phonetically: Gen dobry, yak share mash? = Good day, how are you?
  18. The books and wheels suggest it is a mobile library but knowing your mystery objects that is a read herring.
