  1. You have a good memory, I have a feeling that was one of the four mentioned.
  2. Do they still use removable tyres shrunk onto a plain wheel, or is it one piece these days?
  3. Yes, rebuilt Merchant Navy 'Clan Line', slightly heavier than the Battle of Britain and West Country classes.
  4. That's the one, with 'Explorer' clearly visible on the bonnet side, not a Contractor Explorer but a latter day Explorer. There were four from a cancelled export order that were fitted with fifth wheels and worked on a landfill site in the UK hauling the roadgoing bulkers to the tipping area.
  5. I think that they are actually Explorers Les.
  6. Watford's best doing what it was made for - recovering motor bikes:shocked:
  7. The first one was made in 1939 and they were fitted to Hawker Tempest and Typhoon. It is two flat 12s geared together. Rolls made a flat 12 3450bhp called the Eagle and the X24 Vulture as fitted to the Manchester bomber.
  8. Thanks Ben, that confirms the number at 288, but I have a sneaky suspicion that they may be considerably more than £250k.
  9. Do you happen to know the cost of one, I believe we have aquired 280 or so of them?
  10. OOPS!:red: I didn't know about the Brabazon gearboxes though, difficult to believe they fitted it all in the wing.
  11. The balance of a Deltic is even more complicated as the 3 cranks are not even in phase with each other ie there is no TDC as such.:shake:
  12. The idea of an opposed piston diesel was not new, Junkers having produced the 'Jumo' diesel aero engine during the war. The TS was unique in having a single crank connected to the pistons by connecting rods and substantial rocker arms. Although quite powerful for it's size it provided little in the way of engine braking to supplement the poor brakes of the time. If the opposed piston concept is used with twin cranks it is possible to vary the compression ratio to suit different fuels by advancing one crank relative to the other. The geometry of the Deltic is even more complicated wth one of the three cranks turning in the opposite direction to the other two.
  13. More than just a diesel, there is a turbine underneath:shocked: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napier_Nomad
  14. You were barely doing a walker when I saw you on Sunday with that ickle transformer thing:-D
  15. We look forward to the photos Daz, thank Dad for the trouble next time you see him.
  16. Not thinking of this one Will?? http://ccmv.fotopic.net/p42756635.html It has a a single cylinder engine and a compressor to start it inside the body.
  17. Martian had a large LEYLAND badge on both bonnet sides, Explorer had SCAMMELL cast into the radiator header tank, Crusader had either LEYLAND or SCAMMELL in large letters on the front.
