  1. It's a sludge sump for the gearbox oil Jim, between the pump and oil rails. I would suggest removing the gearbox oil pump while it is all in bits and giving it a clean, but be aware the ball valves are different and must go back in the right place. What was the outcome on the engine side covers? Mike

  4. Jules, many years ago Pete Gaine had a Militant with the same problem which took ages to find. Apparently there is a small gauze filter within the injection pump that can clog in addition to the main filters. Mike

  7. Dorman 12QT would usually drive a 500KVA or so genset, so as before it could be about 750bhp, but may have been downrated for a smaller output.
  8. The blue one produces 600 KVA which becomes 480KW when multiplied by the power factor. As a rough rule of thumb it takes just under 2hp to generate 1kw, so the engine power is in the region of 940bhp running at 1500rpm to give 50cycles/sec.:coffee: Coincidentally I was offered a job at Auto Diesels as a sales engineer back in 1972.

  10. Well done Simon, I take it your 305 didn't have a Thermostart? If not, I probably have the same problem. Did the injectors come out easily or did you need a slide hammer?

Sorry but no, you need to remove a rear wheel to get a good picture of how it works, but basically the Martian rear end is similar to the Watford version but heavier duty and with a conventional spiral bevel diff instead of a worm and wheel. Each wheel has a large drum with a vertical air actuator, all four actuators running from a common feed. It could have been even better if the actuators had a spring for parking, but the simple solution of spring secondary/park brakes was not thought of until the 60s and parking was catered for by a large disc on the transfer.
  13. Pioneer/Explorer use a single air actuator which works the rear brakes through a system of mechanical compensators to give even braking across all 4 wheels. If the air system fails there is still a mechanical linkage back to the brake pedal. As you have suggested, using a single actuator per wheel is far simpler and is the system used on Martian, although still with single line and no handbrake for the wheels, just a large disc on the transfer rather like a Lend Raver.
  14. Seeing as you asked, have a look at the simple but effective system used on the Martian which has a similar walking beam arrangement; my Martian cargo brakes were powerful enough to lock up all 4 rear wheels on a dry road with a 6 ton load in the back.
  15. 33.02mm is the AF size for 3/4 W,7/8 BSF, weld a nut onto a bolt to make a cheap tool or try a wheelnut which is often 7/8 BSF on older vehicles and long enough to go in the bung and take a socket or spanner.

  17. Check the clearance of the inners on the rear springs if using an 8" rim, you may have to squeeze them over the existing 7.5" rims. S26 with 4.79:1 diffs should do 70mph @ 2100rpm.:drive::shake::stop:

Sixth gear is often a problem, I had a 'box in mine that was so shot that the large mainshaft gear was machining the casing yet it was quiet in 6th, but a replacement REME built unit with a full complement of brand new gears screamed it's head of in 6th. My Constructor was fine in 6th but a friend of mine rebuilt his Highwayman gearbox 5 times with 3 different pairs of 6th speed gears and never eliminated the top gear din.
  20. Rob, it is a 15 minute job to remove the pump so do it, I have seen too many Scammell gearboxes ruined through lubrication problems. Don't forget the one way valve steel balls go at the top and the duralumin ones at the bottom. Mike
  21. Are you thinking of getting one? It would be good with a DROPS or 6x6 Perkins 350 and some better diffs. The gearbox is much stronger than Crusader.

  23. The old Rolls Royce badged 305 as fitted to Crusaders and about 54mph on the limiter, but if you were going any distance it cruises nicely at 42. Standard diffs are 6.39:1 but the RAF tankers with auto transmission use a 4.79:1 while civilian ones are usually 5.64:1. I am almost sure the hub reduction is the same ratio across the range.
