  1. Not horizontally or vertically opposed but opposed piston, other common examples are the Rootes TS3 and Napier Deltic.
  2. Exactly, there will be another camshaft on the other side.
  3. Certainly remember seeing packs of Tranco valves back in the 60s and 70s. Decoking is back in fashion as petrol direct injection takes over from port injection, some of the manufacturers use an in situ blasting procedure using abrasives such as crushed walnut shells.
  4. Access to the valves and adaptors for the plugs? I am intrigued by the crankcase which appears to have space for another pair of cam followers.
  5. Thanks for posting that Clive, most interesting.
  6. Can you clarify Clive, was it to do with individual axle weights and the distance between them? I seem to remember the Contractor trials vehicle had the lighter 30 ton rear bogie and 8.5 ton front axle leaving 60 tons plus for the 4 trailer axles.
  7. Depending on thread angle you might find an M8x1.25 will work.
  8. Yes, fully agreed but in a round about way it is currently exempt as I have just noticed it is on SORN! Many years ago I owned an Explorer which was declared as a mobile crane with minimal RFL and able to run on red diesel but I always had to have a legitimate excuse for driving it on the road such as road test, showing to a potential buyer or going to a job. I was never pulled and I doubt the average plod would have known the full implications.
  9. Do you happen know what taxation class it was declared as Iain? I believe locomotives are still exempt but mobile cranes are not.
  10. Not HT but it will give you a fair belt when the points open and the magnetic field collapses in the primary.
  11. I was just about to suggest that running two types of piston might not be a great idea as no doubt the weights would be different but it seems like you have resolved the issue.
  12. The lobes on that cam are well pitted and the base circle is very close to the shaft itself which may mean it cannot be re-ground. You could take it to Newman Cams in Kent for an opinion, they are also capable of making a new shaft. Out of interest does it use roller followers?
  13. Bunch of numpties, I was there about 30 years ago and tripped over an object half buried in the ground. I recognised it as a Pioneer /Explorer distance frame which was completely rotted away but would serve as a pattern to make a new one. On enquiring about the price I was told they use it most days and would be mad to let it go.
  14. Correct, apologies for not reducing the size before posting.
  15. From memory they were sourced from a car, possibly the Hillman Hunter. Cibie produced a halogen bulbed version of the original sealed beam units making it suitable for 12 and 24v. Definitely an Amazon John, I seem to remember it was one of the last ones to be registered.
  16. It is a stretched civilian tractor, R.E./R.E.M.E did not run Amazons. I didn't pay attention to the one behind it.
  17. Look what I came across today, an ex JK Recovery Amazon looking very sad and neglected. I knew the owner and thought it was to be restored but no such luck.
  18. Don't think Keruing is great for painting as it oozes resin. It also has a reputation for causing infections if you get a splinter.
  19. Hi Wally, Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post over the last couple of pages. I suspect you know that a quantity of Rotinoffs were sold to the Swiss army and a few have returned to the UK in preservation.
  20. The rear boxes were usually retro fitted by the R.E.M.E. and were allocated for the crew's personal kit. This my one seen having a trial fit in the garage, a late release in 1985 which started out with the RAF at Kinloss before transferring to the R.E.M.E.. The rear boxes were made of pine and probably fitted in the 70s as they were in excellent condition but far from waterproof.
  21. They have it listed as a Badger, is it not a Beaver?
  22. The F1 used a 14.4k modem which suggests that it was 2 way communication.
