Land Rover magazines are good at churning articles as the subjects in hand always appear current to newer owners but with such a wide variety of MVs in the hobby CMV could only get away with churning when talking about Jeeps! The other problem for CMV is that articles have to be brief, so if it did an Anthony Tucker-Jones article on German armour on the Eastern Front by the time a few words and photos are included on Panzer I they'd have to get on and describe King Tigers within a few paragraphs otherwise the article would take up too much space, and in any case we probably know most of what is to be written. So perhaps they could do some articles on the personal experiences of people who used MVs.

Sadly for the foot soldiers of the 6th RWK every photo I have found shows them ...er on foot! I guess if they added up all the miles they would have found they had marched much of the length of Italy in nearly 2 years of the campaign.

Chris is right - on both counts about the Brigades that left! So 1st RWK in 4th Div would have had 62 on a Green Square As for 78th Div and the 6th RWK in Italy a quick re-appraisal agrees with Chris that 36th Brigade was second in seniority which means a green square. But every reference I have suggests 6th RWK were the senior Bn in the Brigade (and not the 5th Buffs) so that means 60 on a green square not 61. Mad as it seems, in 1980 I was so interested in the Italian Campaign that I bought circa 220 photos from IWM which I still have so I'll find one of either the 6th RWK or the 5th Buffs to see which number is correct.

I agree a Zenith 36IV is fine and in my experience certainly not henous, unless you buy a Chinese built one, with a float that doesn't like petrol and breaks up after a few miles! Best to get a refurb of an original marked with Zenith British Made 36IV, on one side and correct me if I'm wrong the number 27 on the casing where the fixing bolts go through.

Ian, In case I missed it do you know the year that the Standard UV Tilly 12hp you are restoring at the moment was built?

Firstly the 1st Bn RWK in the 4th Division; my records state they were the third (Junior) Battalion (Bn) in 12th Infantry Brigade, and the 12th Infantry Brigade was the third Brigade in seniority in the 4th Division when in Italy. So in addition to the 4th Div red circle sign the 1st Bn RWK would have for example their Carriers marked with a White 69 on a Brown square. 6th Bn RWK was the Senior Bn in the 36th Infantry Brigade (which was also by chance the third Brigade in seniority in the 78th Div). So that means a 6th Bn RWK Carrier would carry in addition to the Battleaxe Div sign a White 67 on a Brown square. This is according to 15th Army Group instructions from July 1943 and a quick check shows this is the same number and colour combination as for British Infantry Divisions in NW Europe on D-Day. Obviously in each Division there were many other Corps & Supporting units with their own arm of service markings, and some of these such as Signals or REME may have worked closely with each RWK Bn. As you can imagine working out seniority can be a bit of a nightmare especially as Bns came and went! I hope this helps Larry

Out of interest what colour and brand of paint did you use for your restoration? Is it a good match for what was under the old voltage regulator and presumably a Khaki G3 colour? G3 came before the SCC.2 Brown you found on the Steering box.

Avoid buying any builders brickwork sealant like Thompsons Water Seal Clear, as it is effectively watered down PVA glue. They changed the recipy some years ago to water based and now it's nothing like the older type of Water Seal which was good for canvas and said so on the can.

With the Government agreeing to renew our Nuclear Ballistic Missile Deterrent, despite the cost, it does concern me slightly that by the time the new RN Subs are in service, new technology such as that in the attached photo, may make the proposed Subs redundant. I'm not against such weapons but its not beyond the bounds of possibility that a number of hostile nations drones could be deployed to lurk in the areas covering exit and entry points to port and then 'track follow' our Subs wherever they go, and be ready to attack at a moments notice. Its fairly well known that Subs can sit on the bottom and use existing wrecks to give cover from radar, and despite the fact that the open sea is 'International Waters' drones without a crew to capture might be tempted to come much closer. Sweden has found a lot of evidence that a certain nation has been illegally entering its lochs over the years. Your thoughts?

That Stug is an amazing sight; something I never would have expected to see when I joined the MVCG in er 1978! Which other shows will it attend?

I see from the show website that it is possible to book in on the day, which is handy for me as I have the time to attend next weekend.

May we see the original photo mentioned above, that the owner has, as I'm not sure the black and white photo above is 'wartime'. Also the vehicle doesn't seem to be the same one on milweb http://www.milweb.net/webvert/a1668 unless it was restored in record time and re-registered.

Well if there is a next year show at WPR, if the web site still says don't bother booking if you cannot come for the full 5 days, I won't risk driving 100 miles just to get turned away

Its also possible to find gloss British Bronze Green on Nato coloured vehicles if a part from stores in BG was used for repair. My Lwt has a BG bulkhead that was over painted in service with Nato Green!
