  1. It is indeed a Brockhouse trailer, my trailer (like the small photo in the above post) was officially modified to carry two 3.5 KVA Onan generators within it, and as far as i can tell was used by the Royal Signals as it has the remains of a blue and white ID insignia on the rear, very similar to that on the WW2 painted trailer. What Size/Type of Generator is it?
  2. One of the fella's at our local club owns this, a lovely old thing, stacks of british character about it, and built like the proverbial brick outhouse, it has loads of room inside and is very comfortable, amongst my favourite WW2 vehicles on the show circuit up here. Why would anybody want a jeep when you could have something like this! It's cleverly called "Pandora" which most people dont get the significance of!
  3. The trailer painted up WW2 style is a Brockhouse 1 Ton 2 WH GS Cargo Trailer, i just bought one to go with my Humber, from Anchor Supplies in nottingham for 170 quid, good bit of kit, very well put together, and they have aluminium wings that dont rust so readily. The wheels are 20 inch rims with 9.00 tyres. This is the same base that they used to produce the trailer "Cipher Office Light" I suppose the steel cross pressings to add strength etc look reminiscent of WW2 period gear, although these are made alot better than WW2 items.
  4. Wish i had bought mine for 60 quid from Ruddington! Jolly good show on getting a Pig by the way!!
  5. I had an 1944 ESSO Valor petrol can which was painted grey and had POOL PETROL stencilled in black on it, the paint was very worn but the can was straight, recently got 15 quid for it.
  6. The Airsoft types have a very good copy of the L1A1 SLR as used by the British Army, while it is not massively cheap, it is however alot cheaper than a Deac, and would look right in a vehicle or for re-enactment. It is made by a company called Star
  7. The other thing that doesnt ring true is the difficulty the crane operator had trying to lift the bomb to remove it, surely when it was placed, that sort of thing would of been noticed! I spent 15 years in the RAF and i have a mate who is now a retired BD, and does it in civvy street, it sounds like a load of carp to me!
  8. I had a go at "Airsoft" over the weekend, hugely entertaining, fun and going by the attendance something for all of the family. However how you would turn an Airsoft BB gun into a live firer is beyond me, they use electric motors and a very thin brass tube as a barrell, the only thing in common with the real item is that they look like an actual firearm. No doubt that will be enough to create a wholly useless law that will only affect the law abiding citizen.
  9. Just to throw in some more info, it wasnt just AFS kit that the Home Office supplied, the also had "Mobile Police Columns" my Austin Gipsy is a former Home Office Police vehicle. I'll get Croc over on this thread, he is the resident AFS expert!! there are also a number of good books on the subject, Green machine as previously mentioned and there is another which i cant remember!:-X
  10. following on from the army going public and slagging the government off, sounds like the R.N. is having a go at the government to highlight how desperate things are getting, cant afford Dinghies etc tactic...........and quite right too! What next? RAF to get rid of Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, sell it as scrap to china and have a Battle of Britain Tribute glider flight! Grrrr, dont get me started, look at the way they are treating the Gurkha veterans....:argh:
  11. I never understood how cast lead pellets in a wire mesh would dissolve enough to provide lead in petrol? these have been around for years, and the used by the RAF in Spitfires thing is always associated with them. "Snakeoil" is a term to be used with most of these things, i have never seen any independent tests where these type of things make a difference. If it was that easy, motor manufacturers would of being using them for years. Anybody worked on Spitfires seen these in fuel tanks??
  12. Thats what the word "fantastic" was invented for! did he know he was going to survive, or do you think it was a failed suicide bid.
  13. RMP= Royal Military Police RVD= Regional Vehicle Depot BVD= Base Vehicle Depot BAOR= British Army On the Rhine Have a look on this website for BAOR information, it is very good: http://baor-locations.com/default.aspx
  14. Just checked in on Withams Tender list again, and they have posted a picture for the "Last in Service" Humber, looking at it the guide price of 4500 GBP looks a bit optimistic. Anybody know any history of it, it seems to have been released with other Ambulances, there is a 101FC and a Series 2 Ambulance also listed as "Training Aids". LOT 282Humber 1 ton 4 x 4 Ambulance with Rolls Royce B60 Engine The Last One in Service Registration Number: 13 BK 14, Mileage From: 2077 miles
  15. Dont uprate the axle, i cant even think how you would go about that with the set-up a pig has, however you could make your vehicle lighter, removing the internal armour plate from the rear would probably shift a ton straight away, i did hear that somebody put the Aluminium Ferret wheels on a Pig, which is another decrease, and remove any surplus to requirement kit off of the vehicle should bring the weight down a bit, thus saving your drive train and engine from slogging away.
  16. *****LOOK!!***** For sale at Withams on their tender list at the moment, no photos just yet, but apparently they are adding them soon, anybody know it or have any pics? 282 Humber 1 ton 4 x 4 Ambulance with Rolls Royce B60 Engine The Last One in Service Registration Number: 13 BK 14, Mileage From: 2077 miles The guide price is 4500 pounds!
  17. I would make a point of driving around the neighbourhood on a regular basis in the big manky pickup, the chains especially set it off, should sort out the property inflation fairly pronto!:-D
  18. I just sent one asking why the council planners let the demolition of a WW2 pillbox even get as far as the planning consultation process, i should very much doubt they would even consider the levelling of an iron age burial mound or the remnants of a middle age fort, so why does this get treated differently, because its made of concrete and more recent history?
  19. If you fancy something large and armoured, that you can take your mates to the pub in, with pretty good spares availability as far as the engine goes etc, and very little problems with the chassis and bodywork, and a bit of a talking point with your neighbours, consider coming over to the "DarkSide" and buy Post-war British.....A reasonable Humber Pig should be attainable somewhere near your upper limit, or a rougher one at considerably less!! not bad to work on, fairly straight forward mechanical layout etc. This message is sponsored by the Humber Military Vehicle Forum (HMVF) :-D
  20. Its the Hollywood take on a kids film...Wallace and Grommet get tooled up! :-D
  21. Alan, i just logged on to put an update on here, and you beat me to it, however my info came from the 16th/5th forum, somebody on there was on the same tour, apparently it was Cpl Powell in a MK2 Ferret that took the hit, the reported description of the vehicle, not exactly correct for the vehicle type. Back to the drawing board, i will have to see if i can get in contact with the chap who seems to think it is the same vehicle, and get his regiment etc, i can then work out who and when, and then see if i can tie in the vehicle details, and see if that equates to my vehicle...or not. However the memory of Cpl David Powell of the 16th/5th Queens Royal Lancers has been remembered and is not forgotten.
  22. AlienFTM, It's never a lot of wind, you can read the books etc, but its always one mans point of view, and anyway first hand accounts always paint a more interesting picture! Buying Pigs from portugal is an interesting lead, my particular vehicle was sold at Ruddington in 1967 and was potentially blown up in 1971, i have no history apart from the auction stuff and RLC Museum dont have any record of the vehicle either. One interesting fact about the vehicle that was involved in the incident, the driver recalls it being painted desert colour (whether that was original british cam or portuguese), it was out on its first patrol, pushed into service before they could get a coat of green on it, when the landmine attack took place, so it must of stuck out like a sore thumb in rural county fermanagh. Not like the British forces to use vehicles unsuitable for the job. when will they learn.:-( And if my pig is the same vehicle, how the heck do you tastefully present that sort of information, been ex job myself id rather keep it low key, the data plate on the commanders side of the bulkhead under the window is missing, so i will probably make a brass memorial plate, so the history remains with the vehicle. I'm open to suggestions on this!
  23. Some time ago i had a phone call out of the blue, from somebody telling me that he knew some history of my MK1 Humber Pig, he seems to think that it may be the same one that a friend was driving when it was hit by a landmine, killing the commander. I have been doing some searching over quite some considerable time, and the only incident that fits in with the time period is this: Cpl David Powell 16th/5th Queens Royal Lancers, aged 22 killed in a landmine attack on his Armoured Personnel Carrier in Kinawley, County Fermanagh on the 22nd October 1971. There is some evidence on the vehicle, on the commanders side, which would suggest that something has taken place, and was repaired at a later date. I am of the opinion that until i have irrefutable proof, that history like this has to be 100% accurate before linking it with a vehicle held in private collector hands. Does anybody know how i could find out any more than what i have at the moment?
