  4. Here's how the flange fits up on my s/s/ down pipe. No flange gasket, the flange simply squeezes the doughnut seal into place. Done quite a few miles now and no problems. ISTR I had to use longer bolts. Maybe this is not the correct way but it works fine. There did not appear to be any other way to get it together!

  6. Hi Steve, If you reduce the size of each photo to something between 100 and 240kb you should be ok uploading them onto the Forum. You may well find that you can do this using the photo handling software already on your computer.

  8. Around 1981 we took the ferry from Westminster Bridge to Greenwich. The commentary was entertaining - as we approached the then new Docklands development the tanoy announced: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you look on the south bank you will see some of the docks and warehouses that has been bought by the ....... and what is being turned into luxury houses and flats. They have done more damage in 3 months, than what Jerry did during the whole of the war".
  9. I installed a s/s exhaust from another Mr. W last year - worked fine and had the same 'brillo pad' ring, don't remember any flange gasket. I seem to recall there was a ring fastened to the down pipe and you put the flange on from the other end of the down pipe. The seal should be nipped between manifold and this ring. Am I right in thinking there is no flare on the new down pipe, and that the pipe locates a short way into the manifold as the flange pushes against the sealing ring and therefore squeezes the seal into the taper in the manifold face? I wonder if the problem is problem is the ring on the pipe which pushes the pipe into the manifold being too far down he pipe? You may need to cut a small amount off the pipe end to allow the gasket to squeeze up tight.

  12. :banana: The red wheels are stunning - wouldn't have thought of doing that with the body colour but it certainly is a looker! Sounds like a Fluidrive transmission like M5's former pipe and slippers drive.
  13. Maurice - I have a couple of the hollow hooks, they were part of a winch spade arrangement made up for a Scammell Mountaineer. I haven't used them yet as am wary of their load ability - any idea what they would have been fitted to?

  15. I believe the London DUKWs are substantially rebuilt vehicles - with Perkins Phaser engine, auto box and usually 4x4 drive (no diff in rear axle).
  16. If you do a search it has been discussed on here before. There are various ways to de-rate but I think (but don't quote me) the easiest is to remove the L-shaped helper spring support brackets (riveted to the chassis in between the rear spring hangars).
  17. :cry: If I was going to be picky it would have a housing just like this one - that came up for sale in the USA 4 years back. I think I'll end up doing a cosmetic restoration on the one i have - it certainly won't run again due to corrosion but the casing could be rebuilt. In fact it there's nothing for it to do except make a noise and chuck out some smoke if it did run! I'll have to encourage Wayne to get back to the dumper - he could have been using it by now as his daily transport, it'll do 25mph easy!
  18. The usual method was to get a length of heavy bar - say 1 1/2" dia., place one end up against the broken shaft end in the diff and give the outer end a good whack with a sledge hammer. If you pull the bar away pretty sharpish the end should 'bounce' out and into the bowl. If not you could pull the other side half shaft and push it out from that side. If you have a rear cover you can get it out. If it is like the old Kew Dodge tippers my dad had it would simply join all the other broken ends laying in the bottom of the axle case :rofl:

  21. The lower edge of bonnet and cab scuttle and windscreen angle scuttle shouts DENNIS PAX at me for some reason. Key identifier must be the rad guard bracket but it doesn't ring any bells with me.

  23. Good move asking - I didn't know much about them when I was looking but was able to rely on the excellent reputation of the seller instead - it worked out fine. But now, if in doubt when looking at something about which I do not know much, I take someone along who does know about them and who can look at the prospective purchase with a cool head! It's amazing how much you can miss when a bit 'tempted' :cool2: And I do the same for others so can appreciate what the 3rd party advice is worth. And sometimes they're not as easy as this to spot!
