  1. They will definitely be saved, but where they will end up is not yet clear.
  2. I'm pretty good at what I term the John Wayne jeep stop. Foot on clutch and brake, screech to a halt, pull on handbrake and leap out. As you exit the space where any normal vehicle would have a driver's door, your foot leaves the clutch and you realise (too late) that it is still in gear and you've forgotten to kill the ignition, so the poor thing jumps forward an inch or two as it stalls. Look at any John Wayne war movie - he always exits a jeep that way :-D
  3. WOT? No right of way over the evil VAN from NELLE?
  4. I look forward to seeing the evidence on Youtube.....:-D
  5. I only know that the British Army had a batch of early GMC 6 x 4s (civilian bonnet/mudguards) originally destined for France but which were diverted when France fell. Certainly the USAAF received plenty of British vehicles to support their early airfield operations until sufficient U.S. kit became available, but I have no information on possible supplies the other way. Either way, you couldn't get a better truck to convey all those 40's vibes around :-D
  6. Tell me that's not ASROTURF... (Oh, jeep looking really good btw)
  7. I'm pretty certain that the vehicle being loaded was not a runner. This is why they positioned it up the ramp in order to roll it down onto the trailer - hence the speed which was the main cause of the disaster.
  8. Frittur Zorro :banana::banana::banana:is now out - just ordered a copy online!
  9. The Federal 605 was used as the tractor unit for USAAF fuel tankers. I'm guessing the 605 wrecker shown in Bart was maybe a trial vehicle, or one of the first batch? The wheelbase is different to 606.
  10. The Militant - that was one very excitable camera man there! Seemed keen on getting the battery out........:-D
  11. Howard, that is Willyslancs's photo, but looks like it might be taken somewhere in USA - note the odd numbers on the bumpers - might explain lack of passenger mirror? Also - was a passenger mirror fitted originally???
  12. You can bow to my greater library if you like, but i wouldn't bother about the knowledge bit!
  13. That's according to Bart Vanderveen?? But the Jan 1942 PRELIMINARY HANDBOOK OF INSTRUCTIONS (written by the contractors, not Air Corps) for the TYPE C-2 WRECKING TRUCK TRACTOR and (which was later adopted as the USAAF Technical Order for this vehicle) clearly describes and identifies a Federal 606 with the curved boom. That's not to say Vanderveen is not right - he states there existed a 605 which had the curved boom - but as in this case we run the risk of joining his stated facts up and assuming there is no variant in between (early 606 with curved boom). :cool2: Does anyone know anything else about the 605? For example Vanderveen describes the 606 as having a 110V generator in the crane tower - as if to suggest the 605 did not have this feature?
  14. No problem - I've been waiting since April 2008........:-D
  15. Thanks Wally - you don't happen to know which number W&T?
  16. Early Federal 606 with fixed boom.. The later builds had straight, extendable but slightly lower capacity booms. Excuse for a gratuitous advert
  17. You know, that looked just like it was going to read.......all the way home to a mains battery booster, and crank it home on the starter. Certainly not with a 6v starter! :nono:
  18. As Richard says, if it is a 12v battery it will be a 12v coil for sure. Ignore the starter motor - most 12v conversions use the same 6v starter as it will cope well with the higher voltage. It may be that someone has wired the two 6v headlamps up in series instead of changing to 12v sealed units or whatever the CMP uses for candles. The 12v indicators are a positive sign that it is now a 12v system.
  19. It didn't look right when I posted it but I couldn't think what was wrong - now I can see i meant BLACKtop!
  20. I'm sure now that the mystery object is for dragging a bus sideways back onto the hardtop.
