  1. Trembler coils - I've heard of, but don't know anything about, them. So once they are energised, it fires whichever cylinder is in the right position with some compression in, effectively firing from a standing start? I thought his knee was in a vulnerable position if it did happen to strike up!!!
  2. Interesting startup - I thought the guy had given up. Then it just started running…... What you might call a 'long stroke' engine
  3. …………3. Check that all 6 brake cylinders are working! They sometimes (or should that be often? ) seize up and this will not be apparent by simply bleeding. Jack each wheel up and get someone to spin wheel while another operates pedal.
  4. He should be thanking me for doubling his chances
  5. Jack. Edit: Oh for crying out loud - what have I done?
  6. So are the RL single wheel rear axle hubs exactly the same as those on the RL twin wheel axle?
  7. He ain't gonna like that one little bit :cool2:
  8. All the huts I've come across which were erected specifically for accommodation had prefabricated timber ends (I think in 3 sections) with small doors. About 4 years ago I found a great big pile of said ends in a yard being cleared which had been well sheltered from the elements by a huge bramble patch. If the large end doors are original, I'd guess that the intended purpose of this hut when erected was for storage. That's not to say it would not have been used as accommodation - who can say for sure? Edit: You beat me to it, Trevor!!
  9. In early June this year an irrepressible Roy Baker went to look at some bones - reputedly some of the skeleton of a long-deceased WHITE 666, 'purely from an interest point of view you understand'. Of course, Roy. Not sure what went wrong exactly, but three of us tried yet failed to suppress his enthusiasm on the drive home. Maybe we overdid the 'downside of it' thing a bit. Anyway the result was a foregone conclusion, so hopefully once Antony gets new points and condenser fitted to his laptop we can delight in some scenes of metal butchery and artistry!
  10. I would be interested to know what condition it is in (sorry not to buy but out of interest) - canvas is notoriously difficult to store without degradation. Guess it depends on the quality of the wrapping!
  11. An electric water pump from a steam cleaner on the press saves a lot of time and effort, especially when setting up. But sometimes the pump would get fried - especially when pressing crawler crane track sprockets off 6" shafts and we'd have to 'man the pump' and finish off by hand
  12. Looks like you'll need a press to get that out - if only there was one not too far away (wood / trees). I am certainly not going to embarrass myself by telling you how I knew what you'd done either!!!
  13. As the press pushed the wheel up, the domed centre of the wheel contacted the top of the press before the tyre was released from the wheel. Little bit of straightening to do? Our press has only one original curved cast iron block - and thanks to your pictures I now know what that was used for! We have several different length blocks made from RHS with heavy plates top / bottom, but they would be dodgy to use for this application. That's what you needed - a longer set of blocks! Tony
  14. Well done - that is no mean feat and a big commitment I'm sure.
  15. Seen it once - it certainly caught my attention, made me think about the Great War. Very well done. I can see that some might find it offensive by using such as a means of profiteering, but in the great scheme of things come on - it delivers a far more powerful message than merely advertising a company or product. So much so that I had absolutely no idea it was advertising Sainsburys - I must have still been thinking about the battle scene while the commercial dross was airing. Maybe I have some means of automatically switching off from the advertising world…….:-)
  16. This morning out on the road I caught an amazing desert Island Discs with Capt. Eric Brown, former naval test pilot and one of those who liberated Belsen Camp during the war. What an inspiration this man is, well worth a listen: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/b04nvgq1 I think it might be repeated on Radio4 Sunday 11 ish.
  17. There must be enough of these saved now such that the Department of Eccentricity would be able to provide quite a good emergency cover if required Good that it was an early evacuee from Withams - I watched some of the last 100 being shunted around  Curtainsider material is really tough, weather/sunlight resistant and available in a variety of colours. Just the adhesive to sort.
  18. Been trying to find out something about Leyland diesels of this period - not much info out there to be easily found. WW2 production was 3.9 and 8.6 litre units. Seems the 600 (10 litre) did not come out until early 1946.
  19. Nothing at all, Bill! Just as there is nothing wrong with people buying something for reasons other than its monetary value. I was just thinking this truck's survival may depend on the latter.
  20. I go along with all the views aired above. But they do have one thing on common - they are based on the assumption that nobody would bother to buy this and do something with it if the likely cost were to exceed its end value. This is a great old truck for the money, even if it is unlikely to earn any interest on the capital invested. But spare a thought for the value of enjoyment in titivating, driving and rallying it? At least if it is lucky enough to be saved, its saviour will probably be a real enthusiast rather than an investor collector.
  21. And then there's the old chestnut about drive sprockets being behind thus having taught tracks on the bottom when climbing up ramps or controlling a descent. Maybe not crucial for tracked armour, but an old crawler crane with worn tracks kind of highlights the argument  (couldn't find a smiley for squeezed cheeks!).
  22. I always assumed visibility was a bit of an issue with Ferrets?
