  1. I could just imagine that green one dragging itself around in front wheel drive - "Ain't done with her yet boy - she can still skid a few logs out o' them woods!"
  2. Hey Tony - how about getting the old girl a front-mounted dozer blade attachment for her birthday? :cool2:
  3. Sorry but the reality is that, given your extensive efforts to secure best price, whatever best price you can secure will be the max that halftrack owners can afford - as without tracks they will no longer be able to run their halftracks and presumably will, shortly thereafter, no longer be halftrack owners  I wish you all good luck in your efforts - I'm sure halftrack owners everywhere appreciate it so keep at it!
  4. Blackout white painting was applied on USAAF vehicles by the base depot, to varying degrees depending on their own ideas. Lots had very little or no white at all, others were plastered with it. Note the white edging to Ernie's front fender skirts.
  5. Also of note is the not-seen-by-me-before stencil variation of 'CAUTION LEFT HAND DRIVE NO SIGNALS': CAUTION THIS VEHICLE IS LEFT HAND DRIVE
  6. I couldn't help but notice in the FURY credits, that Adrian Barrell is listed as MILITARY DRESSING ADVISER. Over to you Adrian - what do make of Larry's assertion of casual dress in the USAAF?
  7. "Casual uniform? CASUAL UNIFORM? OK guys, when you've finished your donuts, everyone lynch Larry!!!"
  8. It's a bit like trailer tail wagging, Larry - you've just got to drive through it. The more frequently you take it out, the quicker the dread will turn to a big grin across your face, and the less fearful progressing to more confident you'll be the next time you drive it. :drive::banana:
  9. Mmm - about 3 times the size I thought it was going to be :rotfl:but that can only be a good thing!
  10. Now I can see why you threw caution to the wind! Looks like twin wheels on the rear end. What is the driveline / axle arrangement back there?
  11. Andy - please check your PMs and confirm collection is ok! Tony
  12. Ralph - last month I volunteered to transport a 10.5cm gun to and from a local history group's WW1 commemoration event. The wheels are modern just to make it mobile, maybe one day a pair of correct pattern wheels will turn up.
  13. Dave Crouch had a N.O.S. Marshall MJ military cab very recently - worth giving him a call. These are not cheap but you get what you pay for. There seem to be a few floating about the dealers again (most came out around 8 years back). Alternatively if it is just wheel arches on cab which are bad, the curved outer floor / door sill panels are available from someone like Ditton Service Station Kent who supply new Bedford parts.
  14. No 'possibly' about it!
  15. Great picture. There is a plate on the rear lower side but I cannot make out the lettering. Mercury was a British company but this doesn't look like one. I wonder if Clark had set up a British operation at this time?
  16. Hi Adam, what a dinky little critter! I'm not sure it it would be a Clark as they were a U.S. Company and I cannot think they would have used a British Fowler engine - also they had various small machine designs around this era which whilst looking look vaguely similar are not identical in detail to your tug. The set-back front axle is a classic British design feature of the era, but for the life of me I cannot think at the moment of the names of the few companies making these little tugs at that time. The engine is quite a rarity!
  17. I was of the view that Special Types provided a means for over width and over other vehicles to circumvent the C&U Regulations thereby allowing their use on the highway - but only for the purpose of carrying out the task for which they were designed to do. For example an over width mobile crane or dump truck could be taxed so as to allow it to travel on the highway, but only for the purpose of moving from depot or job to job for the task for which it was designed/built. But can I find any proof to either support or trash this? No! I'm sure that in days gone by it was never the intention of the regulating body to ban the use for social / domestic purposes of such vehicles as historic MVs, and thus many were registered accordingly and their use seems to have be accepted. But it does seem nowadays that thee is inflexibility in the system to get these registered without falling foul of ever-tightening legislation. I do hope someone can provide evidence to the contrary. What definitely has changed these days is that the owner now has to make certain declarations concerning compliance of the vehicle instead of in the past the regulating body checking al the facts before accepting the registration / taxing of a vehicle, so owner beware!!!
  18. I'll second Jerry's recommendation. If you are able to burn out / off any remaining rubber from the housing and pin before going, it'll probably be easier for them to sort a quote out. There would also be a significant cost to separate and clean / prep components, if you can do this (and maybe get bushes and pins sandblasted) it will make a big difference. There will be an initial set-up charge for the vulcanising tooling but you may be able to find other DT operators needing the same job to help spread the cost. Tony
  19. Who was it who said: 'How come the Americans call their hurricanes names like Sheila Florence Beryl and Katrina, yet in the UK we call all our hurricanes Gail?'
  20. Ah - might this be one of those tricky grey areas? If it said 'designed and constructed for and used by the armed' etc, I suspect it might be more accurate? I imagine the drafters of the wording never thought such vehicles might be used by private operators /preservers.
  21. SOLD! Your Jeep will be sent to your email address in a JPEG format file - please be aware the file size is very large and may take some time to download onto your computer. If you would prefer to receive the Jeep on a SD1 memory card please contact the auctioneers by close of business tomorrow.
  22. Oh how I wish I was stupid…………….
  23. The Mustang landed safely at Duxford, the undercarriage held fine. Big relief all round!!
