  1. Hi all, can any one tell me about and if possible supply pics of a military Bedford 4x4 truck with a pto driven rear winch that has a vertical drum between the chassis rails and just behind the rear axle ?

    Engine Trials.

Wow Nice pair :cool2: Do they only need one keyway to lock them to the shafts ?

What's with the Gauge below the Right hand Tacho on the right, its off the top end of the numbers !!! Where the same gauge on the Left engine is not ??
  4. Beware of using coatings in fuel tanks I have heard a problem with regard to this due to the newer unleaded fuels being used containing a percentage of Ethanol or Methanol which is supposedly able to dissolve the coatings :shake: don't know how true this is but before you do it, it might be worth investigating...( think it was a MVT Mag )
  5.      Heard it all now !!!!!!!!!!
  6. Happy birthday Jack you old wotsit... From all the Cubes and have a great New Year Oh yes :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: Get on with your GMC ...............................
  7. Points new ok and gapped right. Condenser good, clean, Insulation tested as per Clive, knew this years ago. Plug leads in good condition, no spark tracking in the dark so can assume ok. distributor cap clean, oil free, no cracks, carbon bump ok tight and not worn, same for rotor arm. This has crossed my mind, on the to do list. Something which has also sprung to mind, does any of the GMC owners out there know if these engines are prone to wearing cam lobes down !!!! How much lift should there be at the valves between open and closed ??? Come on check those manuals for me.... R. F. <quote> added to that, check valve clearances............and although it would not appear to be related, check for any dragging brakes. Valve clearence done as per TM manual Brakes all good never drag, regularly checked and greased.
  8. Did this just whip back along the line of pull, I can appreciate it might go further past one or the other end but generally in line with pull ? I can see the use of gloves up the cable but have also seen people using them right by the winch :nono:
  9. As a foot note to all this, did you know the domestic winches for 4x4 do not need any kind of safety factor for the cable, this is why they stress the point "this is not to be used for lifting purposes" the reason for this is as soon as you say lifting you are into Cranes and machines then you have to comply with loads and cable safety factors. So watch out as the winch you are standing by may well be able to exert a force if the motors up to it to snap the cable its fitted with, chances are the grip will be lost before but you always get the I know I will strap my vehicle to a tree and then I wont slide!!!!!!
  10. I have a Turfor 32 will lift 3200Kg's has a 16mm cable and a sheer pin in the winching in lever, this is so if the sheer pin goes due to you trying to pull too much, you can still use the out lever to unload the Turfor, Its big heavy but if you are stranded and no engine power or electric winch this could save your life. There is a certain model of Turfor which is safe to lift people ie it complies with safety factors on its cable and is classed a lifting machine.
  11. <Quote> For the general purposes of this forum neither of these apply as we are dealing with PTO driven equipment, where, as Mike pointed out, the rating of the winch is greater than that of the cable. On GMC trucks with winches the wire rope is hemp cored and 1/2" dia rated at 10,000 Lbs ( I think off hand ) for self recovery, but the pto drive shaft to the winch has a sheer pin fitted in it, I would hope this would fail before the cable snaped ( taking into account that the cable is in a safe to use condition ) so there is no instance that any danger could occure ? With ref to the "4x4 winches" which are electric, I dont know of any, which have a cutout or sheer pin fitted so what stops the cable snapping on these when you have masive 4 and 5 HP motors geared down and most only fitted with 9mm cable ? Ref point 2.. Does this work/any point to it, what happens to the bit of cable that doesn't have the "winch sail" on it ? Does anyone out there know how a straight cable under heavy load fail conditions reacts ? Mythbusters did a similar thing and that just whiped back inline between the two fixed points. Point 3.. Gloves to be used when winding cable on the drum !!! I thought, as in machine shops gloves were a no no as in it is better to get a cut rather than get a glove caught and pulled into the fair lead / drum before it can be stopped. Please don't take any offence to any of this I am just posting points which have crossed my mind in the past at 4x4 events and assumed the marshals knew best !!
  12. Hear hear, I have seen front tow balls on Landies pulled off the front bumpers including the 24mm bolts with nuts and these have pulled straight through the mounting holes scares me to death....... Anything which can transfer the acceleration + weight of a vehicle to something which is stationary and bogged is in for a surprise.....
  13. A tune up !!!!!!!! So what sort of things would you suggest ? Fuel system / filters all clean not touched the carb but exhaust is not sooty and does need a little choke to start when cold. Timing set and does not miss a beat air filter washed out and re oiled. ?????????????????
  14. Fuel !!!! Not much difference most strange, I cant make it out. Its always pulled steadily but seems to get left behind on hills where other GMC just keep pulling away :???:???:???:???:???:???:??? I need to drive some other GMC to find out how my truck compares ..... Any offers
  15. Go for a heavy ( weight ) battery ie more lead or more plates per cell I have judged these in shops before and it seems that the lighter it is the less capable it is. But also goes with the price so cheap might not get you out of trouble when you need to crank it for some time. Use to be CCA cold cranking amps, but this is now given in different measurements SAE, DIN, ect all a bit different. Battery size does not matter with regards to charging, dynamo's or alternator's are all the same, also just because you might have an alternator don't think it will charge the battery better or quicker, it might put the bulk of a discharge back in quite quickly but the last little bit is the important bit which is the point the battery starts gassing, this is the point at which a chemical reaction occures and does its stuff with the lead and acid ( I think) Please correct if I am wrong, never too young to learn......... Best of luck, I try to get the biggest which will fit in the holder and a known manufacturer.
  16. Ha b_____ Ha, well if the new ones are as bad as the old ones it still runs fine, starts what ever the weather, hot, cold stood for months or just had a 30 mile run down the road, so can't be all bad  I hope..
  17. How have you got on with them Degsy ? Well since I have changed the old plugs which have been in there since I have had the truck ( 11 years ) I have not noticed any difference with the new Champion ones ? Does this mean the old ones are still fine ?
  18. As far as I know the pins are either steel or stainless steel so it comes to the actual rivet bit the Ally ones should scratch with a file or similar. the steel ones should be heavier, if in packets should be different weights. The steel ones will be harder to use as well. Good luck.
  19. Glad it all went well those lock tabs are a tight fit, can be a real job to get a bend started but after that it's not too bad..
  20. Don't talk to me about that damn thing........................... Kids played it first for a while, then started fighting with each other because one wanted to go one way on the screen and the other the other way.......... So we stopped them playing, trying to get them to calm down after all the chocolate and sweets ect. After they went to bed we had a go but doing it after some drink it is not a good idea. Nearly had to replace the centre light, very close call there, most of the ornaments and pictures are ok, the hand held controllers are hard though, even with the rubbery thing round them, nothing that time wont cure though, good fun probably more fun when you have had a bit to drink but do it in someone elses house, things can easily get way out of hand...............................
  21. Judgement days coming !!!!!!!! Well they might fall to bits before that...
  22. I have had a Clarke Air Compressor for about 5 years now 14cfm 150 Ltr tank, cast iron 2 cylinder compressor, 3 HP single phase motor belt drive, something to look out for is the opperating pressure, some are only about 100 psi and when most things run on 80psi you are on to a looser before you start, so go for 150psi, so you have more pressure to draw down on. I have used da and a plasma cutter on mine and when sanding you get fed up sanding before you run out of air, does cause the motor to run nearly all the time but the pressure is still good. nearly the best thing I have bought, all the air tools !!!!! Someting has just poped to mind, make sure the air lines are big enough, bigger the better and couplings all go to lower volume at the end where you need it, more flow the better the tools work.
  23. Yep will do, they just about still believe, but "Wee" know what they are getting for Christmas and we cant wait for them to open the presie's so we oops (they can play with it). Best wishes to one and all..
  24. :argh: damn TM manuals...... Well it does give you a chance to inspect the wheel bearings......:cool2: Merry ( you know what )
  25. Interesting, I thought that all front drums at least were demountable!! I know that there are 2 types for the rear splits one is demountable and the other type is not. I know this because the two rear axles on my truck are one of each type !!!!!!!!!! but my front ones are demountable as in the manual tm9-801 page 348 fig 177 top left pic for front split axle, there are 6 hex bolts round the drum outside the wheel studs and once these are out the drum will pull off over the hub.. If you look at Pg374 there are 2 types for the Banjo and on Pg376 there is the one type for splits ?? are you sure you have split axle front hubs ??? hope this helps.
