  1. Just found the classic cars clubs website. It ain't cheap. http://www.classiccarclub.co.uk/membership.asp Mike
  2. There is a classic car ownership scheme running along these lines. If I remeber correctly the "club" owns the vehicles and members pay an annual subscription which pays for the maintenance, storage and insurance of the vehicles. You then have the right to book a vehicle out for a set amount of time each month. I believe they also have a few specifically for track days. This is all from the deepest recesses of my memory, remember reading or seeing it on TV somewhere. Mike
  3. Your not hanging around on this one then. I think your right to keep engine at front. Been doing a bit more thinking and the following would prevent some interesting problems to eat into time. Gear linkages Do you need power steering? Clutch operation. Brakes - servo assistance. All solvable but I can see them being time consuming to resolve and get working properly. Mike
  4. My brakes were not very effective, unless pumped, after changing the master cylinder, 2 wheel cylinders and fitting new pads. No air in system as bled about1 litre through. Once the adjustment was fine tuned they were fine and still are. Stops really well for an unsophisticated drum beake set up. Pulling to the side could be an adjustment issue aswell. Mine used to smoke (white) when started during colder/wetter weather. Not sure if it still does as has not startet in a month. Seemed to improve after the carb was rebuilt. Mike
  5. Have returned from a few weeks away, to find the truck would not start. The miss matched and dubious batteries that were in when I got it have finally decided to give up. It was obviously time to remove the nice comfy seats and fit some of those high quality Series land Rover ones. These have the bonus off being able to reach the door handles, access the fuel tanks with ease and refit the batteries back between the seats. Refurbed battery tray fitted, generator panel put back where it should be, behind seat. Just neeed a shunt box to reinstall along with the jerry can holder (sitting in garage) and that will be one more bit reinstated. Oh yes need to connect new batteries up and cross fingers that it starts. Refitted cables as previous but without the extra meter or so of leads running into the back. Has gone from this To this Looking much more like it (although maybe a bit clean) Mike
  6. Thought about that as far as I can work out you still have 5 forward and one reverse gear. Rotating the engine to mount in the rear changes direction of propshaft rotation. If connected to axles, left as norma,l you would have 5 reverse gears. By rotating the axles and mounting upside down you have basically handed the differentials so you maintain the 5 forward gears. Attached is a quick simple sketch that demonstrates this principle. Arrows show direction of rotation of each element. As long as I have my theory right it should be OK. I am sure somebody else will tell me if it is wrong. There are of course drawbacks and other complications. Gear linkages will be interesting. Autobox would simplify things. If you do not have permanant 4 wheel drive you will have front wheel drive in 2 wheel mode. Mike rear mount.pdf
  7. It appears to have a 6 way switch. Ride hieght loooks good for ex-mil along with headlights. Not a bad looking truck if pictures a a true representation. I would check under that lovely carpet at the footwells. If it is a real Landy the carpets will be soggy. Mike
  8. I have no idea what it fits bout do agree that it looks in VGC. I suppose you could always mount it on a piece of wood, add a plaque and make a very nice trophy to award to somebody. Mike
  9. After our chat at Old Warden I thought you would be attempting a Me109, maybe that's next. Are you going to try fitting the engine in rear just take make it more challenging? Have been thinking about it and mounting engine rear. If you rotate engie 180 degress to line u at rear transfer box out puts are on wrong side for diffs. Can you mound axles upside down on 110 to get over this? Mike
  10. Mive looks like somebody has spent a lot of time restoring the instrument pamel and what is that funny diagomal tide markjust below the cockpit? I must be looking in all the wrong barns, All I ever seem to find is bovine excrement. Mike
  11. If swivel hubs are hidden behind gaitors it is probably best to assume they are pitted, the gaitors are known to trap water. Remeber to sheck hi and low 4WD. Tapping chassis with a metal object should help determine its condition, good medal gives a nive metallic ring. Oil leaks - Land Rovers leak oil, it is a fact of life. However they should not be large. Check thinks like transfer box output shafts and axles. Not expensive to DIY. Brakes should be solid on the pedal, they are not as bad as some people make out. If master cyclinder is leaking out of seal at servo end the fluid may not be visible from under bonnet. Tends to run down the support btacket beneath and off the chassis. At least mine did, was only weeping and did not seem to affect the braking. Mike
  12. They tried that previously http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Habakkuk Mike
  13. Probably right but being electronic would not trust it, in fact from reading several forums it appears that they have a habit of self releasing or staying on. By all accounts the owners manual recommends you always leave the car in gear when parked and the brake activated. From what I have found C&U regs require the parking brake to hold a vehicle on a 18% slope (thats 1:5.55555 in real terms) whilst in neutral. Mike
  14. Despite best efforts proof has come to light that the diminishing of the polar ice caps through global warming is just another military smoke screen.

    MoD cuts

I was hoping for a Spitfire but I will have to make do with a Harrier. The neighbours might not like it when I start my new "leaf blower" up on a Sunday morning.:-D Mike
  16. A nice job there. Is that Lego Mark 3 I see in there? I always used to raid the Meccano Mk 2 for making brackets and stuff. Mike
  17. Having read this thread I think using the FOI act to find out what specifics apply and was states is a starter, without this arguing will be hard. Have done a bit of reading on the IVA basics and this may be a way forward as if it passes one of these it is compliant for road use and as such should be registerable. http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/layer?r.s=m&r.l4=1081996775&r.l1=1081597476&r.lc=en&r.l3=1084755856&r.l2=1082103262&topicId=1081996775&r.i=1084731470&r.t=RESOURCES However from items on various kit car/street rod sites you need things like seat belts, demisters/heaters and padding to sharp area in the passenger compartment. Could prove difficult With respect to braking systems and the requirement for two seperate braking systems I recently had a new Passat as a courtesy car and as far as I could tell it only had one effective braking system, the middle pedal. Its hand brake was a button on the dashboard. It also automatically applied and realeased the handbrake automatically when you stopped for a certain amount of time. Do these actually comply with C&U? Give me a mechanical one anyday at least I can control that (and execute handbrake turns). With respect to lights IIRC you used to be able to get daylight MOTs where all you needed was a brake light and reflector. Was this just motorbikes and are they still available and if so is it possible to apply this to other vehicles. Mike
  18. At a guess if you see a few people on a demo site with no PPE and an inappropriate bit of plant you know you need the camera at hand. Mike
  19. When you see the plane there you light this fuse Mike
  20. I got that one the other day to. Popped up when I was following a link. I my memroy is working it was one of the threads about stolen german WW2 tanks and was in the post by Jack. I ignored it as well. Mike PS found it try link in Post 3 http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?20981-Jailed-for-stealing-a-Maybach

    MVT Contacts

Thanks Mike Will of course have to bear this in mind next time I am trying to check a proposed yard layout. As scraping a vehicle in could become the literal case. Not that we design anything that tight. Mike

    MVT Contacts

Not wanting to start an argument or anything, and I may well be completely wrong. But last time I read my copy of the Freight Transport Association Designing foe Deliveries (1998 edition I think) thwe maximum width for a vehicle was 2.5m unless it was a refrigirated vehicle and then 2.55m was the limit. As I said I may be wrong. Mike
  23. The radiator is missing or I am sure he would have done. I notice the nice wheels and tires. So its a wheels up retoration then:-D Mike
  24. 1 more to say that they have done all this and still there is no light. 1 to respond that if you replaced it with a low energy one you will need to wait half an hour before it emits a sensible amount of light. 1 to say that you should fit another 5 lights and you will thewn b able to see with the eco friendly light bulb. 1 cheeky member who will tell you to "take you welding goggles off" and you would not need the light in the first place. Mike
  25. Then you need another membver to say that light bulbs are OK but since he upgraded to a flourescent tube he has never had so much fun and that we should all do it. Mike
