1. and when you work outstation you accidently mention how much you miss your truck.... oops missus
2. Was doing some digging on DU and ammo boxes etc would be no concern as the penatrator is seal in the projectile and it states "No additional protective measures are required for unfired DU munitions beyond those required for all amunitions " I like this though "You are in a situation where DU presents a hazard if you— Are in, on, or near (within 50 meters) an armored combat vehicle at the time it is struck by DU munitions or an M1A1/A2 Heavy Armor tank when it is struck and breached by any munition (DU or non-DU)." I think DU during this event would be the least of my concerns This is also a nice quote "Like lead and other heavy metals, internalizing large amounts of uranium could affect your health"
3. the dust from corrsion on it is the annoyance which bring up some aircraft parts are made from thorium magnesium some bearings were made from copper berylium and more importantly a lot of tools such as the needles in Navy descalers and non sparking hammers
4. Everything is dangerous Lead based paint, some other IR paints are very toxic. All the innards of old radio equipment is toxic with the major hazard being pcb's and could go on and on However you will find a hell of a lot of similar toxic stuff in your kitchen. Being in an industry with lots of safety training I often think how many injuries occur in the household with spouses that have undergone no training in HSE Spray on oven cleaner for example is pretty much paint stripper and people have gotten 3rd degree burns. Drain cleaners have burnt and killed many. A chemical swipe of most older ceiling fans are coated in pcb's due to the capacitors used to start them. Shorting the fancy mobile phone battery can cause an explosion. Those little lead soldiers kids chewed on.....:-D Any paint in your house over 20 years old So its all on a case by case basis.
5. Did Gypsy's enter the MoD in UK? Given the age of this one and it was in the Malaysian Army I wonder if it belonged to the MoD first http://www.mudah.my/Austin+Morris+Gipsy+4x4+Jeep-17472484.htm
6. Dunno as has a lever that turns 90 degrees and one that lifts up. I thought it was a towing bar when I first saw it but then when we pulled it out saw the wooden handles. My mate bought it as it was 'green' So I guess it's technical name will be the 'thing' for a while
7. Very nice video. I never realised there is so much difference under the skin, tub etc. Actually I been trying to find a parts breakdown for the front axle, disc to disc to see if its a FRC8194 unit?
8. Some junk we picked up Anyone know what the thing is with a shovel handle on both ends??
9. So going to make a wider hull :-D:cool2:
10. another junkyard trip with same same... but a few odd ones found a Wico Model X Magneto Y-111 which seems to be fitted to Wisconsin engines..... it's in an army junkyard so does anyone know if they had gensets etc?
11. just checking in... anyone got scanned pages of the snatch front axle, that I can peek at to see if same as above, or if they use standard LR diffs? Also was someone breaking snatches recently anyone got any details as am thinking a snatch one would be better than an earlier rapier spec item with respect to the outer CV's and splines
12. yep.... the 110 rear axle is a Salisbury unit or a Dana 60. Bit strange as thats Salisbury US, not UK. Civi defenders reverted to Rover axles in 2008 which is a weaker design but I was told the mod preffered this as pulling the innards out of a Salisbury is not easy due to the pretensioned case Salisbury are beefier, and were not fitted often to the front. Some early series had them but are not so wide. 101's had them but were widest and had different cv's (and drums), the strongest axle fitted to LR front ends Looking for a parts break down so I can see if the 300tdi discs and stubs fit or have to put range rover bits in that are supposed to fit. Another odd quirk is some have ventilated front discs and some have non ventilated. The picture above shows non ventilated. So the input above saying they were also fitted to the recently relased Snatches make me wonder if the part number for them is different as defenders went ventilated around '98 I think. Anyone got some snatch laying around?
13. there is a piccie of a big reamer.... but where to get from as i would like to do also
14. Ok this raises an interesting question, metric or imperial :wow: still digging
15. the rebuild i saw showed that these are typically line bored for best fit...... I remember it as thought thats a pain but i got some manuals here I'll see if I have any different methods
16. What I have read and seen is that its a salisbury diff centre with modified case and axles with standard rover balls and stubsIs a bit daft as beefy diff and halfshafts but the cv yokes are standard. 101 also have Salisbury front axles but are wide and also have bigger CV's and bigger balls to accomodate themThe pictures I have of this diff shows it is definately salisbury for the casing, removable diff pan and the input shaft. The axle case is also the pretensioned type
17. thats interesting....... anyone got a parts manual or pages for that? curious if 10 spline or 24 spline stubs as that bit is standard LR...... The info I was told today was "is that from the chrome balls outwards is just standard Land Rover Axles (pre 300tdi) the special parts are the casing and the drive shafts the panhard rod and the steering bar." If fitted to Rapier trucks cant be that rare??
18. G'Day Anyone got a parts diagram for a FRC8194 axle. Apparently fitted to armoured 110's in NI. Was wondering if the recently released Snatch have them also? Curious to see whats in them, as I know it's a Salisbury diff centre, standard CV but the swing arms, stub axles and disc are different. So keen to dig deeper into this before I buy one
19. yep singapore, just pre war... apparently from a life magazine photo shoot... was some morris shots earlier glad it was useful
20. This was all a long time ago, around 1985. Kalgoorlie was one of the placed where aircraft were cut up after the war. I was on the hunt for Vultee vengeance parts and I ended finding this and a few other bits off this SpitfireThere was another box of bits. With the box being made from the Spitfire skin with another huge section made into a chook shedI gave the bits to the Bullcreek aviation museum as I was volunteering there when I was 16. Dunno what happened with them after that until I got a call several months later from the guy tracking it
21. I used to volunteer at an aviation museum in Perth so lugged them from Kalgoorlie to Perth. I was looking for Vultee Vengeance parts and found these each part has the unique serial number so was traceable. About 6 months later I got a phone call from a guy who had been trying to find this particuliar aircraft as it landed heavy but was complete. I had to tell the poor bugger that a farmer had turned it into a chook shed, so he was devestated
22. Been scanning old photos These came from a spitfire wreck I found many years ago
23. Might as well add this one in also as been scanning today
