  1. Without wanting to be nosey, this is a subject that has always interested me too. Up until recently I worked engineering works on mostly dockside cranes. Erection, dismantling, crane design, consulting on the use of all sorts of mobiles. Now do basically the same thing for cranes on oil rigs. Have also done precision engineering apprenticeship, programming and setting CNC machine tools, BEng in mechanical engineering, and worked engineering the movement and lifting of abnormal loads, was asked to project manage the biggest land crane in the world but the money was rubbish.
  2. A good blasting always makes things look better. Looks like your blaster man used builders sand?? Richard
  3. The R100 Scammell is as Adrian said an artillery tractor so would have typically towed the 7.2 howitzer in its hey day. Nice pics. Richard
  4. Haha, yeah its back breaking but i wouldn't have it any other way. Bigger the better in my opinion. Been looking at your Bedford resto, looks good, need more British vehicles on the road . Thanks for looking, Richard
  5. Hi nick, give me your email address and I'll send you the PDF. How did you get the engine out in the first place? Richard
  6. While were waiting for the white metal bearings man to do his bit with the engine, we thought we'd get on with a few other bits, so i spent my christmas holiday rebuilding the winch drive. It was so covered in grease and dirt that i couldn't even make out the nuts and bolts holding it together. Still, fully stripped and cleaned heres some photos of it going back together. The nut that goes on the bottom of the shaft in the picture above had been done up so tight the thread was nearly totally stripped, so i found a nut of similar A/F size in the workshop, bored it out, screw cut the 1.5 BSF thread and milled some split pin slots - sorted. Coming back together now and as it stands now, nearly finished waiting for the brake and dog clutch assembly. Richard
  7. Yeah I suppose you could pump oil into the pressure gauge outlet or something, the pump would act as a block in the system being stationary and force the oil to the bearings etc. I always put things together smeared in oil and make every effort to keep everything scrupulously clean. Richard
  8. Looks great. What does the plunger looking thing next to the main gearbox do? Richard
  9. Looks really nice. I've never looked into the mechanics of dingos before, do I see two propshafts coming to the back end and bevel gear boxes transmitting drive to wheels? Keep up the good work. All the best, Richard
  10. When rebuilding our jeep engine, or anything mechanical for that matter I smeared everything in oil as I put it together. Then did as four fox said and cranked engine with ignition off and pipe in gauge slackened till oil came through to expell air from pipe, did the connection up, cranked a bit more to check pressure was coming up. Ignition on and away she went no probs. I was going to say that we bought a new block and it had cross drillings only accessible from inside the crankcase that should have plugs in them, not sure if the wartime blocks had them but presumably so. I'm now rebuilding the Gardner 6LW from our Scammell and would like to run the pump without running the engine to circulate oil after seeing Jacque littlefields guys doing so with their panther engine but the pump is geared to the camshaft, so might try to circulate it by cranking it on the starting handle tho that might be a bit optimistic. Glad you sorted it, Richard
  11. Would that be the Welbike UK people Ron? I've looked at their website, it all looks really good. But since i have the equipment and the skills i want to do as much as possible myself, thats the enjoyable bit for me. Plus doing the engineering drawings will give me something to do in the evenings when im away on work. Hopefully i'll give you a ring over the christmas holiday. Cheers, Richard
  12. I'm guessing this is one of the two said survivors being advertised and now sold: http://www.militaryautographs.com/item.asp?itemnum=738 Richard
  13. Thats a shame. Does anyone know if Ziger's 9/1 is a runner? i'd really like to see it. Richard
  14. Oh yeah, why didn't I think to look there, cheers. I never heard of the Ziger and Becker collections, presumably these are closed from public view?
  15. Just out of interest, does anyone have a definitive list of surviving sdkfz 9's? I know about the obvious ones, Kevin Wheatcroft and Auot 44 museum, but what others are still around? Particularly interested to know if theres any 9/1 or 9/2 left. Cheers, Richard
  16. Hi Ron, Thats good. As you probably guessed from my thread, im building a replica Welbike. I have about one and half engines, now i need an original to take some accurate measurements from. Would you be agreeable to letting me do this? Thanks, Richard
  17. Are there any other owners of original Welbikes in the Bristol area? Thanks, Richard
  18. Why was the engine coming out Adrian? Richard
  19. Am I missing something here? Have you just acquired this lovely beast? Richard
  20. Reason I ask is there is a chev near me which could come into my possession at some point in the future. But the owner moved it a long time ago by putting his forklift through the cab. Assuming chev body work is rare I'm just wondering how much I could use from a jimmy. So it sounds like cab with a bit of work, bonnet and wings. Richard
  21. Hi John, That sounds highly frustrating regarding the engine. I've bought a couple of manuals from Gardner Enthusiast but have found them to be pig ignorant on the phone. My i suggest Walsh engineering for Gardner services, and there are a few other good ones too. I have stripped my engine, and it is due to go to a local specialist soon to have the white metal bearings refurbished then i will rebuild the rest. I've got most of the ancillarys and bolt ons already done ready to go on. We refitted the back axle to ours over the summer and i have refitted the completly rebuilt front hubs and stub axles etc this last week. Would like to have it ready for 2014 but i only get weekends on it so progress is very slow. I'm also not allowed to put photos on the net of the vehicle in its current location, but i'll add some photos of the engine rebuild to my thread as it comes together cos thats in my home workshop. All the best, and if i can lend any advice drop me a PM. Richard
