    Fog

FIDO Fog Investigation Dispersal Operation Basically it meant lighting two trenches of Petrol alongside the landing strip, which caused a hole in the Fog.
  2. I think I have seen some US vehicles painted like this in North Africa and Mediterainian photos. Could this have been shipped from Algiers or Sicily and not been repainted? Also the 231 plate is on the wrong side for a British vehicle.
  3. Clive You need to find a Dry Cleaners that knows what they are talking about, so avoid a major chain who won't care. Try and find an old shop with an experienced Dry Cleaner to get better service. Also, have you tried the local Tech College, as Dyeing is part of some Textile courses and they might be able to help as part of their studies.
  4. er.. How about several small maps and Sellotape?
  5. It was a few years ago, but I saw some repro 'Bigot' packs at the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth that contained some D-Day maps. Otherwise try EvilBay where Maps do get advertised - try "ww2 map france" as a search.
  6. If you look in "The World War 2 Tommy" book by Martin Brayley and Richard Ingram, the spade and carrier are shown on page 22/23.
  7. The National Army Museum is good, but they don't allow photography. Do other people on this Forum know of other Museums that ban photography?
  8. This car was registered in Reading, Berks. RD and DP were Reading Borough Council issued codes. Is the car still in the UK?
  9. I beleive they were made locally to me in Woodley, about 2 miles from where I live in Reading.
  10. I see in the News today (Sunday 23rd Nov) that VAT might be reduced. This will make fuel cheaper still. Reading between the lines, it might mean they are sweet talking the public into an Election soon? Sorry, Politics, better shut-up now. Still, cheaper petrol means I can get both my vehicles out, instead of just one.
  11. 89.9 at several pumps in Reading today.
  12. When I was Editor of 'Windscreen' it was always a problem getting articles for the magazine, and I had to ask people to write things, such as show reports, and I took the photos. If the current Editor can turn articles away, then I would be very jealous.
  13. Try this group. They should help with manuals aswell. http://www.royalsignals.org.uk/index.html
  14. From a film 'The Square Peg' made in 1958.
  15. One could be a re-built set when the B set was disconnected as being obsolete in the post-war years. Have both sets got a tuning dial for the B set? Also, a Mk3 19 set should have 2 x 12 pin connectors on the left side. A Mk2 has 1 x 6 pin connector and 1 x 12 pin connector. 19 sets were made in UK, USA and Canada. The Canadian models were better finished, and tended to have 'crackle' finish to the case. UK made ones tended to have just painted cases.

    Caption time...

Now I know what is meant by 'Soft Going' by Horse Racing commentators.........
  17. I have just found out that some Poppy collecting boxes were stolen locally to me in Reading this month. One from the Rail-Air station in Reading town centre, another from a Doctors reception area in east Reading, and another from a shop just outside Reading. The last one was recorded in colour on CCTV and was shown on local TV last night. You can clearly see the scum's face. Unfortunately this crime seems to be quite common. If you look at the BBC News website, there are several thefts listed this year. Better stop this thread as it seems to be creating too much anger, even though it is understandable.
  18. Owner to Mechanic - "Do you want to start again and this time read the Manual?"
  19. When my eldest Daughter was doing WW1 at school, about 9 years ago, I was helping her with facts. They studied the 1916 Somme battle, and she asked about the Pals battalions - Teacher had never heard of the Pals.
  20. Bovingdon tank museum has an original concrete body and they are going to fit it onto a vehicle chassis to recreate an Armadillo. Saw it a few years ago, so it might be complete by now. Anyone seen it/know about the project?
  21. I know the truck you mean, and I believe that this was a modification by the Army by using a spare radio body and a GS version of a WOT2. WOT2 production ceased at the end of WW2 in 1945, and I know that a few WOT2 vehicles were supplied by Ford as just chassis/cab but I do not know production numbers. Thinking about the WOT2, I know that a penthouse version was made as I have seen IWM photos, and that a contract was placed for a WOT2 to have an AA gun on the back, but I have never found an example of either. Would be nice to track something down.
  22. I can find no record of Ford making a wireless truck with a canvas tilt on the WOT2 chassis, but I have heard of wartime modifications in the field where a wireless body is fitted from a Morris or Bedford onto a WOT2 chassis and cab. The Wireless Light Warning was a Royal Artillery vehicle, and would have used a WS 17, not a 19 set.
  23. 1. It is not registered, nor ever has been, I can not find a chassis number, would this be on a plate somewhere? what/where am I looking for? Chassis number is stamped on the chassis rail, right hand side, just below the passenger door. It wll start and end with a star. It's not stamped very clearly, and could easily be hidden by layers of paint. 2. She doesnt run very well, runs with full choke, makes a strange sucking noise, so sucking in a lot of air even with choke out, when I push choke in, sucking stops but so does engine? today I took off the fuel pump, to clean and check, it was mucky with flakes, I wondered if there was fuel starvation? will refit it tomorrow and see. May be the carb, am I right in thinking that the Solex sucks in air through the side of the carb as well as the Air Filter? Sucking noise is normal for a WOT2 with the choke out. Both my Ford V8 vehicles do this. It is my suggestion that the engine stopping/poor running is due to the distributor needing setting up (I have found that 90% of poor running on a Ford V8 is due to distributor problems). You need to get someone with the right setting up tool to do this for you - don't try any other way or you Will get work. Also you must replace the condensor with a Lucas type DCB121C. Fit Champion 7 plugs (from Green spark plug Company). 3. Although it has a wireless back body and the guy who I got it from had collected all the kit we are not sure how it goes, ie tables, operators chair wireless set up? Any one any photos of the inside of a 15cwt Wireless truck. If it is the house type, you don't have a wireless truck, but a light warning truck. These were only supplied to the Royal Artillery as office type vehicles, and contained the Officer, maps, table, Field telephone and maybe a WS 17. The house body was built by Morris and supplied to Ford. I have sent you a PM.
  24. I've spent 3 nights in the acadamey over the last 3 years and never saw any Ghosts, and the only noise in the night was snoring. I remember it was a bit warm there, so blankets are not needed.
