  1. It's a British Morris Light Reconnaissance car. Not sure if it's Mk1 or 2, the difference is Mk 1 is 4x2 and the Mk2 is 4x4. Looks like a 4x2 to me.

    The Police

Not a story about the Police, but a Traffic Warden. I was going to Woodcote Steam Show with my Ford WOA2 last year and stopped in Reading to pick up my Mother, who wanted to come along with me for the day. Parking is horrendous in Reading, and I stopped on double yellow lines, reasoning that it was only a few minutes to collect Mother from over the road. When I looked back, there was a Traffic Warden standing there, and I rushed back to apologise and say I would be going in a minute. His reply was 'Oh, I couldn't give a ticket to such a fine vehicle'. What's the chance of finding a Traffic Warden keen on WW2 vehicles? We ended up having a 10 minute talk about vehicles and the model aircraft he was building. There's good and bad folks all over - luck is only finding the good ones.
  3. My Ford WOA2 is called Matilda, as that is the name my Father always called his car, and it is something to remember him by.
  4. Sounds like a 2 inch morter ammo box, but it is definitley British. Not sure who G & M.L. were, as these boxes were made by hundreds of small manufacturers, like Jerry can production. These boxes were frequently used as tool boxes both in the Army and Civilians after the war, and sometimes had a modification for a padlock.
  5. Only info I can help with is :- 1. 19 sets came out in early 1942 in service. 2. The body on the truck is standard, so if you look at an 8cwt Morris or any other wireless bodied 8cwt vehicle, they will all have the same layout. 3. There is a photo of one of these trucks in Normandy in 1944 and it appears in some books. I did help out a friend with his 8cwt canadian Ford with the 19 set installation a few years ago. Only advice I can give is make sure the 19 set doesn't have a T on it, as it means Tropicalised, and destined for far east use in 1945. Don't forget o take the aerial off when on the move as the wireless was meant to be used when the truck was stationary only. Try the archives at the Imperial War Museum for photos (Department of Photographs), but it is best to make an appointment and go there to find the photos, as they have thousands and it will take you a whole day at least to look through them. Don't just write in for a photo, but go there and find exactly what you want. If you need any more help, contact me on robert.davey6@btinternet.com and I will see what I can find.
  6. Thanks for the suggestion, but my vehicle has the petrol pipe combined with the sender unit. Anyone else help, please?
  7. Can anyone help, please? The fuel tank sender in my Ford WOA2 is faulty. I either need a new one or the old one repaired. Can anyone help with either? The unit is help in place with 6 screws, and has one outlet. Knowing Fords, it must be a standard unit, and not specific to just a WOA2. As the fuel tank on a WOA2 is only 12 gallons, and it dos 12 mpg, a working gauge is a bit essential. Robert Davey
  8. My only claim to fame is standing behind Vera Lynn on June 6th 1984 in Arromance, and appreaing Live on Breakfast TV when we all sang 'We'll meet again'. My Wife couldn't go on the tour as our first Daughter had just been born in April, but she did see me, and I have a video copy to remember the event.
  9. GOT IT. Thank you all very much for your advice, and have a Good Christmas.
  10. My best bits of 2006 for me are :- 1. Watching my eldest Daughter awarded a Bsc in Adult Nursing in February and her starting work in A & E in QEH in Woolwich. 2. Driving my Ford WOA2 to Beltring for the first time after a 14 year restoration (I moved house in that time, which slowed the restoration down). http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q16/woa2/P7220074-1.jpg[/img] http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q16/woa2/CNV00029.jpg[/img] Robert Davey Reading

OK, I need help. How do I add a photo into a topic? I can see the 'insert image' button, but can't figure out how to insert the picture. Please help!
  13. I own a Ford WOT2 and after much research and confirmation from the original paintwork on the truck, a 1943 WOT2 should be painted Brown (Service Brown No3) and then have Mickey Mouse camouflage painted on in GREEN, not Black. This was also carried onto the canvas, and was applied by Ford at the factory. The IWM photos KID3804, KID3803 and KID2178 show a factory fresh Ford WOT2 of contract S2019 which dates it at early 1943. I rubbed down the paintwork on my own Ford WOT2, which is also from contract S2019, and found the Brown base coat with Green camouflage. It seems to be that the Black camouflage was applied to vehicles with a base coat of Green, such as Jeeps. As far as I am aware, all British built Ford vehicles were Brown. I know for certain my 1943 WOT2 was Brown with Green camouflage, and also my 1944 Ford WOA2 was also Brown with Green camo.
  14. If you want a complicated vehicle for spanner sizes, try a wartime British Ford like a WOT2 - The engine is AF threads (mostly UNC) and the body is Whitworth. Ford produced the engines and transmissions, hence AF spanners, and Briggs made the bodies with Whitworth bolts. I've got used to it now, but it was frustrating at first. I agree with using good tools, and use the local car boot sales for Britool spanners, which are usually very cheap as modern car owners only want Metric.
  15. I have never attended the veterans weekend in June (always clashed with work) but I can get the time in 2007, and know Weymouth from annual holidays in August. I have a Ford WOA2, which won a prize at the War & Peace show. I would appreciate it if you could send me details of how to get in the parade. The car will take 3 passengers in comfort (well, WW2 comfort). You can get me on robert.davey6@btinternet.com Many thanks

    WOT2

I know the Civilian Ford trucks were called Fordson. Is this why the public call British Military trucks Fordson, when they should just be a Ford? A bit like the Austin FV1801 being called a Champ, when only the Civilian vehicle was titled as Champ?

    WOT2

A question for you all. I own a Ford WOT2 truck. All the Official handbooks, parts manuals and literature all say FORD - Even all the Official Army literature call it a FORD. Why is that people call it a FORDSON???
  18. I have 2 wartime Ford V8 vehicles, both English. They each have a 21 stud engine as they were made in Dagenham and are 3622cc. The 24 stud engine was built in Canada, and was 3.91 litres. The French V8 engines fitted to the SUMB are based on the 24 stud engine, but I believe nothing is interchangeable with the older wartime engine. Both the 21 and 24 stud engines are correct for 1939/40, but you just have to remember where they originated for the vehicle you intend to use them for.
  19. I bought some postcards when I was in Guernsey, and one of these shows a GMC leaving an LST as part of the British forces liberating Guernsey in May 1945.
  20. I can help with detailed drawings of a Ford WOT2, and I have helped Roy Models with their 1/35 kit of a WOT2 which was based on my truck. If you contact me on robert.davey6@btinternet.com I will send you copies. Robert
  21. Can anyone help me with getting 2 900x13 Olympic Sand tyres? I need the tyres to get my car back on the road again after fitting original tyres which wore out in a month. I have tried the vintage tyre dealers, but they are all out of stock, and waiting for some more to be produced.
  22. I have a colour sample called No2 Medium Brown, which is what I have painted my Ford WOA2 in, as it is the same colour as it was painted in 1943/44. The paint was made by Trimite, but they don't seem to deal with the general public any more. The colour called Dark Earth is actually called No4 Light Brown. I hope this is of some help.
