  1. Rick apolgies if this has been discussed elsewhere, my C8 came in eau de nil on the engine and i thought that was the "correct" wartine engine paint. (I know post war its sky blue) John
  2. I can't confirm the part number but i buy my head gaskets from John Walker in Nottingham as he has a good range of engine parts and you save on international postage costs disadvantage is the gaskets he has left for the 4 cylinder have water jacket holes which are very slightly too big but that said i have run with one like that for a long time now and having taken the head off last year there was no adverse effects from it i think i paid about £10 - £15 for my gasket
  3. pity I haven't got a photo but my party piece for the displays at Duxford used to be to get a Mk1/2 airborne on the way into the tank splash pool and then drive through it with the water at least half way up the drivers hatch. It was not my vehicle and someone else had to clean it afterwards  so was great fun while it lasted
  4. That Ferret on eBay can be bettered by many others - its missing huge amounts of exterior cosmetics and without an interior shot of the crew compartment back who knows, just look at the tear in the drivers seat for an indication of possible condition :schocked: £5k? That's not even the starting price as he has a high reserve on it as stated in the description.
  5. Hello Ghasp I'm intrigued cos I live in Bookham PM me if you like
  6. for fiddly bits on chassis etc I cover in grease applied by a paintbrush over the top of the masking tape Bit belt and braces and of course de greasing is extra work afterwards but I prefer the added comfort of 2 layers of defence from grot where ya didna want it
  7. Thanks Lee I was going to ask how you did your Fox for when mine arrives. However i think it is only a matter of time before someone becomes the test case to prove whether we are all valid in our various self determined categories since the forms were never intended to cover MV Apologies if you have covered this in previous posts but when the insurance claim went through on your infamous incident with the lady driver was your category of exemption claimed ever questioned by KCM?
  8. Congrats :-D Just for info do remember that whilst the V112G simply requires a signature on its face what you are signing to say is that you are bound by the legal declaration you are making which is that your vehicle is pre 1960 AND at the same time is a goods vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 tonnes. That is why jeeps are not MOT exempt because they do not meet both these conditions. There is no such thing as age exempt MOt without taking into account the gross vehicle weight
  9. any chance of a bakers dozen :dunno: if so i would like to go too  :thankyou: John

    The Police

moving from the car park to the petrol pumps at Thurrock services on the M25 my Ferret commander was sitting on the back hatch flap. When we stopped a plod came over and asked if that was where the commander sat on the move, we assured him no he sat down within the turret. I thought he had a fair point as anyone sitting up top at motorway speeds would be stupid - that said of course you are hardly much safer sitting inside :banghead:
  11. Thanks Rick You can however hide a multitude of sins behind a coat of paint  The arches are in the condition i got them and are as you say very good, sadly all the rest backwards from them is a real hotpotch of poorly done replica work - i would dearly love to see and take measurements from an original vehicle so that i can get mine re made properly, eg my cab floor is partly wooden from when the metal rotted out and the whole rear body is a mix of metal and wood which makes it look like a lorry bed but is no where near correct. My highest priority however is the cab doors as they are a wood frame skinned in sheet and thus totally wrong PS bragging a bit i actually have 3 Ferrets, a Fox, Landrover 101 and the Morris - no wonder none of them are any good - working on them is a bit like painting the Forth rail bridge.
  12. Rick an interesting issue - safety versus authenticity On the basis very few drivers these days would understand or be looking out for hand signals, my C8 is fitted with indicators. These are the standard BMC fittings so look slightly old :dunno: so to my mind do not spoil the overall effect. The switch is the sort of thing I remember from Routemaster buses so again looks fairly old but is still available as an off the shelf item this topic also gives my an excuse for posting a photo of the old pride and joy :-D
  13. Kev Don't know where you live, but if its near Chatham is this the lot you refer to? http://www.thegreyfunnelline.co.uk/ if not they have a number of RN vehicles and are a very friendly bunch
  14. Rick you are trying for a wartime C8 GS aren't you? if so it should be eau de nil which is fairly close to the colour of the border around this meassge template and so no where near the sky blue quoted by Chris which is as stated a post war (1950+) colour
  15. :dunno: he's just trying to make money like everyone else who sells things or offers services, after all the site is free for most people and does cost him money to run (pot and kettle :?)
  16. they :police: got him in the end certainly was a memorable way to exit this mortal world :yawn2:
  17. I vividly remember a demo at a Royal Tournament (but can't recall the year as I went to everyone of them from 1969 until they finished) where the Marines did a set piece recovering a Scorp using a kinetic rope. I assume the "stuck" vehicle was being held on its brakes while the recovery vehicle (another Scorp) took off at a rate of knots then, just like in the description on the marlow website, it stopped dead and the "stuck" Scorp practically took off when its brakes were let off and the rope recoiled. :schocked:
  18. Mine is a C8 GS just like John's - except his is much better
  19. I am happy to do a copy of the maintenance and drivers manuals for free if you pay the postage - PM me and I'll send my address. I have originals of the manuals so they will be first generation and I will do them as the original size ie maintenance is A4 whereas Groucho produces it at A5 size so the diagrams and photos are very blurred - I have his manuals as well so speak from personal experience. :banghead: The manuals do not list torque settings. It is my understanding that vehicles of that era do not quote torque settings because field mechancis would not have such tools with them to be able to do it in the field anyway. Base mechanics set things by dint of their experience. Anyone care to correct me???? Intersting that John recommends 60lbs, I was guessing at 40 lbs when I replaced my head on my C8, I will have to increase that now
  20. sorry to be bureaucratic but the registration process quite clearly states what the DVLA will accept as proof of age documents and you are asking for trouble using foreign documents. In the event that you cannot provide these it also gives a list of approved clubs who can certify age in the absence of documents. I too have registered my vehicles via the Wimbledon office and had to provide age attestation letters from (in my case) the MVT inspection officer (IMPS are also approved for this purpose). Once you give Wimbledon such a letter it is all very straightforward. (they require me to bring mine in for a physical inspection but we eventually agreed they came to me to do it saving my £££ in petrol) (Yes both MVT and IMPS charge for the service but it does cost them to do it and you will get free road tax)
  21. so is a Ferret and its British and its post war
  22. Hardyferret are you looking for your landrover's records? If so EMLRA have some record details. The RLC museum uses volunteerts to do the records search and as stated you pay £25 no matter how much, little or nothing comes up. (All I got was the date of disposal!) MVT do not have direct access to the records and cannot bypass this system.
  23. I agree with Chris's comments. I have owned my Mk1/2 for 11 years now and been able to do most maintenance jobs on it myself although you will have to invest in heavy tools to suit - but that is no different to owning anyother form of armour. The most frequent maintenance cost is fluid replacement especially EP90 gear oil which is used all over the vehicle. Consumable service parts (points, filters etc) are still available from selected dealers but getting scarce as with anything else from the 1960's AFV range Lifting kit is a major advantage if doing work on your own but a simple engine crane is all you need and with 2 people not essential unless you are doing an engine (sic) change Long distance driving is well within the capabilities of a properly maintained vehicle although, as Chris said, you do have to be very aware of oil leaks from hubs especially and be prepared to check and top up if necessary when you get there (ie always carry spare fluids). I have regularly driven 200 miles + to and from London - Worcester. Vehicle transport to shows is awkward because at approx 4 tons it is too heavy for most 7.5 ton recovery trucks to carry as a pay load so you need to hold an HGV licence to truck it there yourself. Using a trailer you would need one which has powered brakes so realistically it is best driven to shows under its own power anyway fairly comfortable to drive but remember they are 40 + years old so there is little point buying one if all you are interested in is speed. They will cruise all day at 45mph. Most are driven at 50 mph but it will likely top out at about 60 mph (by hitting the governor) Mk2 are popular because of the turret but are cramped inside and many of us prefer to switch to Mk1 or Mk1/2 for practically eventually (I also have a Mk2 and a Mk1). price wise as ever depends on what you want to pay for the amount of work you need to do - the odd restoration job does still come up but restored ones are at least £5,000 nowadays
  24. before the age related tax exemption rules came in I had already registered one of my Ferrets on a "Q" plate as this was in those days a lot simpler form of registration than getting an age related plate. I have now changed it to an age related registration. Do not try to do this by post you will just end up going round in circles. It is much better to go in person to your local DVLA regional office: - explain what you want (and that it is a military vehicle and will need someone who is intelligent enough to appreciate that NO it is not the same as a car ) - present a letter from one of the approved clubs recognised by the DVLA as able to issue proof of age certificates (ie effectively the MVT or IMPS - you may be charged a small fee by the club for doing this) - establish if the the local office will require to inspect the vehicle, this may be down at their office (if you currently have valid road tax on your vehicle and can legally drive on the public road) or, as in my case, argue with them until they agree to send a mobile vehicle inspector to your location to do an on site inspection. - wait for them to post a new tax disc and amended V5 registration document - all in all fairly simple if you get them in the right mood
