  1. is there a way to extend the time before the forum automatically logs me out? I often find I have to do some work in between postings on the forum and by the time I sneek back to continue I've been llogged out and have to start again.
  2. this a 105mm Oto Malera (ie Italian designed) pack howitzer capable of being stripped down into mule sized loads for jungle use. Also capable of being towed behind "jeeps" / Champs. Built in the early 1950's and used by the UK and many others incl Argentina (the RM museum has an ex Argie Falklands one on display)
  3. If you claim exemption using V112G form and your towing vehicle would ordinarily be subject to goods vehicle plating and testing regulations (which very simplistically is related to vehicle weight) then the most common exemption claimed is under category 30 - "vehicle first used before 1 January 1960" the rest of the clause states "used unladen and not drawing a laden trailer, and trailer manufactured before 1st January 1960 and used unladen" Which seems to imply you can draw a trailer but obviously it must be empty - so your AA man is right in the sense that not many MV owners use their trailers empty
  4. here we go again ! Read all about it here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_10015767'>http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_10015767'>http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_10015767 unless you personally have it in writing from VOSA no one can definitively confirm either is exempt as none of the categories on V112 or V112G apply to either Ferret or Fox directly and VOSA will not give a consistent ruling if you actually contact them. Members of this forum have each been told different things by VOSA at different times. This is because neither form was ever intended to be used for wheeled armoured vehicles and they simply cannot cope with making the vehicles fit the available rules because they don't! the current situation is that many members claim exemption, the majority have done so because they were told it was OK by others but do not actually understand themselves why they are exempt, they just believe what they want to hear and claim from ignornance. Most people claim exemption using V112G under category 30 - this states " motor vehicles first used before 1st January 1960 and used unladen". A Ferret with a date in service pre January 1960 is arguably Ok under that category but a Ferret with a DIS after 1960 is not exempt if you try to use category 30 on the form - VOSA have confirmed this to me in writing, my 1965 Ferret is not exempt by virture of its category 30 age. Obviously as Fox was built after 1960 it cannot claim age exemption so anyone who belives Fox is exempt must claim using one of the other categories of exemption. Please feel free to suggest which one applies if you believe it is exempt. V112 G form found here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_10015767 V112 form may only be used for vehicles weighing less than 3500kg and so can be ignored as far as Ferret and Fox are concerned, it is the wrong form and must not be used - for information only it can be found here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_4017716 So the average claimant uses something from the V112G only but as this form does not actually require you to confirm in writing which of the exemption categories you have decided apply to you there is a large area for doubt yet you have to sign the form and that means you have decided (and are legally liable for that decision) which of categories 1-36 applies to your vehicle if you base your claim on the statement that your "vehicle is of a class listed in schedule 2 overleaf". the situation will remain at best dubious or unclear until there is an accident and the person responsible has the book thrown at them in a test case in court. Be very careful that whatever category of exemption you claim on the v112G form is consistent with the category of vehicle shown on your V5 log book from the DVLA - for example if you claim MOT exemption because you are "outside the scope of schedule 2" because the vehicle is a "motor tractor or heavy locomotive" then that's how you must be registered. As a motor tractor you then have to obey the rules relating to that class of vehicle - ie maximum speed 30mph everywhere except motorways (40mph) read all about it here: http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/v3/roadsafe/speed/index.htm
  5. just goes to show what do sailors know about anything :captain: I think its a very nice tree - just needs a fairey sitting on top to finish the ensemble ... ooops just looked at the picture above and i see its got one already :shake: (nothing personal to whoever it is of course!)
  6. Hi neighbour Just down the road from you in Staines, throughly approve of your vehicle choice and a nice way to remember your dad too. Do you attend the MVT heathrow group?
  7. john fox

    Senior Service.

Just down the road from me on my home reach too - does that mean I need to move :shake:
  8. Thanks Vince that will be a godsend - I'll be in touch........
  9. Thanks Richard - they are the same as Ferret :cool2: all is explained - you didn't seem very keen and couldn't refuse fast enough when I asked if you could do the job for me a few months ago!:coffee: Some sort of post war snobbery  Next time I'll ask about the C8 instead - mind you've done at least one of those as well I believe :yay:
  10. I need to check my Fox gearbox using the depth gauge method (I'm making a gauge up myself), please would someone confirm if the depth settings (dimension X) listed in the Ferret EMER as correct for Fox as well given that the Fox gearbox is not interchangeable with a Ferret one Thanks
  11. Apologies for returning to the tyre theme but are bar grip tyres interchangeable with run flat tyres on armoured vehicles? Eg Can post war vehicles such as Ferret or Fox use bar grips instead of run flats or is the load rating too low for the vehicle's weight? I need to find some 11.00 x 20 and can find bar grips easily (since they fit lorries) but, as is well known, run flats aren't around anymore
  12. rather than similar threads can't we have a FAQ section or stickies in each section which cover issues such as research your vehcile history, whilst there's no shame in newbies asking the same thing there are better ways of giving customer service than repeatedly writing the same answer
  13. just a quick one to say thanks guys enjoyed it immensely, hopefully be able to stay longer next year
  14. Obvious - Congreave rocket modified for the firework display to celebrate the admission of the 28th State to the US :coffee:
  15. My father did that for every car he ever owned - if you want to know the average mpg for a 1988 Vauxhall Astra 1.3 (his last car) drop me a line as he recorded every drop he put in the tank over the 11 years and 90,000 odd miles he owned that one. Similary its predecessors to whit an Austin Princess, a Triump Herald, a Triumph Dolomite and a Morris Minor going back to 1962. Although I have carried on his tradition on my "normal" car, in MV terms I have never done it because as I once said to someone who asked me about my landie - if you want to know the mpg and running costs then you can't afford to own one.:evil:
  16. I hope to meet you at Fleet but not sure of my timings yet -still a lot left to get ready and I'm still at work. I'll trying phoning you tomorrow to see if we can agree a contingency plan BTW if we do meet up there's 2 spare holes out the top of mine - could be filled with heads/bodies if anyone wants a ride down
  17. ok then count me in John x1 CVR(W) PS Who is the weather God and how do I supplicate to him/her
  18. Yep - such proposals are a matter of much debate for exactly the reason you identify - fear of loss of income and a a pro safety debate to justify it. If really bored read it up here on the MOT tester forum http://www.motester.co.uk/forums/forum4/212.html
  19. My Fox is on MOT exemption and its impossible to organise one in time now. I know there is a big debate about exemption claims but until there's a test case its legal on the road. Does that disqualify me?
  20. Hi John what torque did you use for the head bolts or was it not that scientific - the book has no info so I did mine to 40 ft/lbs John (the other one)
  21. Strange but not too surpising since being taken over the new company's idea of customer service is very sloppy. I took out insurance cover with Roadsure in October 2007 so am an existing customer. However I had absolutely no problems when I took out the recovery service 10 days ago. - they know its for a Fox in the under 7.5 tonnes category and the letter confirming my policy details arrived 2 days ago. Given I'm off on the HMVF Salisbury Plain tour next week I'll let you know how good the service actually is when I get recovered home from it, it is a Fox after all so won't last the course
  22. arrgh - the great law makers mind at work ....... how do you tow on or use a road you can't use :yay::yay::yay: :yay::yay::yay: sorry gave me a chance to play with the girls (there's always one a bit on the slow side)
  23. the fun thing about that sale was the seller had just bought it 2 weeks previously on Ebay where the then seller had not quite described it as well as they might so lots of people missed it. the buyer then re listed with a better description and look what he got for his "labour" :yay:
  24. ahhh... the joys of the Ferret reserve tank debate, this is a great source of amusment on the Ferret forum although somewhat for the retentive persons only
