  1. so you did use yoghurt pots then ... I always suspected as much :coffee:
  2. How about: what to look for when doing pre-purchase inspection (incl technical stuff) known weak spots and/or common modifications done by owners to make it work "better" (at the expense of originality) dimensions/where can you store it (can bits be taken off easily to make it fit inside) ease of maintenance availablity of spare parts split between service parts/consumables and bits for (rivet counter) restoration purposes whats it like to drive how rare/historic (and by implication therefore resale value?) I guess it would be too difficult to keep a price guide up to date in the way the magazines do unless someone trawls the small ads each month and even then asking price is not sale price ....
  3. anyone want to join me in doing Ferret or Landrover 101 (I'll leave the Morris to the expertise of Rik, John and Julian et al )

  5. age discrimination is now illegal and should be punishable by blacklisting from the Forum IMHO - oops not allowed to say that anymore :nono: Hey the ban me smilie has disappeared, just as well, now you can't ban me :cool2:
  6. Simon Ferret wheels are never made of steel they are always of aluminium/alloy (I am not sure which metalurcially speaking) but they are absolutely not of ferrous construction and the weight of them when lifted up will soon prove that
  7. I ran out once outside Worcester Cathedral in a Ferret, was about 7pm on a Friday night and although I always carry a full can .... I hadn't got it with me this time :argh: Then i realised all I had to do was switch over to the reserve tank and continue to the next POL stop.... :red:
  8. I would second Chris - accepting that you need to change the inners, do that only on the wheels you need to - it is hard work and pointless on those where the tubes are Ok - why not just do up the rims on the latter ones. Rims are alloy, so underneath a "scabby" paint finish there's nothing can be wrong with them (ie rust etc). Just paint strip (chemically or by needle or other means) and tart them up.
  9. Huh - :nono: Rupert rank just means you hot air a lot, we all know the army is really run by the NCO's as they are the ones who really know what's what and still get their hands dirty and solve it. I want to keep my rank what it is :coffee:
  10. sorry if this is already covered but what sort of driving do we actually do on this trip: - mainly on tarmac - mainly on level/rolling dirt tracks  - mainly on graded off road type things :shake: I am starting to wimp about how comfortable and/or difficult it will be if the weather is bad and I am driving wheeled armour in which I have non existent cross country skills on wet terrain. If the forecast is bad and the route is tough I might like the option of switching to something easier (and drier!) as I have the fortunate position of having a Landy as a substitute vehicle and am too old to enjoy a head out in the rain and a butt sitting in a puddle in the drivers seat anymore!
  11. Dave apologies if you are already familiar with the consitruction of the wheels but if not some pictures here may help http://www.ferret-afv.org/runflat/photos.htm when it comes to getting the tyre off the rim remember the rims are alloy and not steel and so can be dented if you use excessive leverage under the rim lip
  12. 42.2 from Hooley to Fleet services 49.6 from Fleet to the Bustard postcode
  13. Hi Rik I've got what I've listed :-D of course whether all 3 Ferrets currently work ..... Fox arrived 2 months ago and the plains invasion will be its first outing, almost guarantees it will break down just like the Morris did :red:
  14. The AA route planner says Hooley to Fleet services is 42.2 miles - this is based on the Hooley start point being the junction of Church Lane and the A23 in Hooley and is 1.04 miles from the M23 junction! I leave you to guess how long a circuit of the M25 during the tail end of the rush hour will take
  15. thanks Guys - I can add another number to ny signature vehicle list now!
  16. Hi all Morris fans with a great bit of timing I have just got the history card for my Morris C8 and as we are all back togther again I would be most grateful if people could confirm I have understood it correctly The post war (Nato) reg number was 32 YT 90 and is shown on the chassis plate attached to ... err the chassis. Based on that the RLC museum could only give me a "key card number 2" which sadly only shows the following: WD number: 32 YT 90 engine number: 2507 tech type or mark : this is blank abd annoyingly everyother vehicles listed on the page has a type recorded for it! converted from: 5812059 - if i remember earlier postings this should be its wartime Z registration number - please can someone confirm if this is true contract: S.6450 handwritten across the entry is : s/o (struck off), can't read the next 3 charatcers, then the word is disposal, with an apparent reference number (TWN/1/689B) and the date 24/10/57 mine was first registered with the DVLA in the late 1980's and my previous owner told me he was led to believe it had been used as a wrecker/recovery truck by a garage using a trade plate prior to its restoration back to a reasonable attempt at an orginal GS truck (its no where near as good as John W's, Julian's or Rick's mind you) by someone who we don't have a name for So my questions are can I safely regard my vehicle as reg no: Z 5812059 built under contract S.6450? does anyone have any info about contract S.6450? anyone got any ideas how i find out who originally restored her/converted her from the garage wrecker so I can start to trace its post military history as well since its now been out for 51 years! PS anyone with C8 cargo versions with the following NATO numbers (32 YT 89 through to 99 and 32 YT 00 through to 04) some of the data I have listed above is recorded on the same sheet so i can pass it on to you if one of them is your truck If Clive sees this what was the YT number series used for?
  17. IMS,B on Milweb at the moment there is a "1950 saracen armoured car" which is described as "twin turret" is that because there is a hatch for the anti aircraft bren behind the actual turret or was there really a twin turret Saracen?
  18. thank you Jack and Joris and the rest of the team, nice to be back
  19. we had discussed forming a convoy for those going from London, Surrey and the south east generally but had not got as far as agreeing details and i don't know who is who so can't contact any of you directly can we start again? The most recent suggestion was a meet up point of the M3 Services (Fleet) but interim points along the way to Fleet might work as well for me re the Croydon lot? Who are you and can you commit to anything yet?
  20. PS do we need to start the food bringing list again as well? I'm happy to bring canned stuff (beans and/or tomatos)
  21. being at bit computer illiterate this may not actually be Chris's site but when i tried his link 2 minutes ago my virus software went into overdrive with warning alerts
  22. you'll be there then heh !!!!!!! :shake: http://www.hmvf.co.uk/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=38&topic=6014.msg56318#msg56318    :shake::died:
  23. anyone care to run a sweepstake on me making it there! To give you and idea for the odds: been to 2 shows and broke down on the way both times -first bust valve and then bust valve spring! John (the other one)
