question Manufature date on a Browning 1919A4 30 cal
Toolman replied to Toolman's topic in Weapons/Accessories
Thank Mike Great Info :-) Is the Shinbec Arsenal stamp the inverted U? I think someone has removed the guides because it came with a belt of 30-06 and it feeds these in ok (probably to make it more suitable to fit a wartime vehicle) The 30-06's on a metallic desintegrating link belt hang out nicely. Here are some more photos of the stamps. Looks like a full stripdown and clean is in order judging with the dirt on these photos on macro -

Toolman replied to Toolman's topic in Weapons/Accessories
Thanks for that, I will have a look, not field stripped it yet, looking forward to that. I'm going to keep the purchase price to myself for now :-) Andy, you can tell I must have managed to get a few hours of work in now :-) MT -
Hello I've managed to aquire (buy) a deact 30 cal for the ferret :-) It appears to be manufactured by Saginaw and later converted to 7.62 (Israeli?) Deactivated by Ryton Arms in late 95 (spec A) is it possible to find the manufacture date and any other details? Will it be a WW2 manufactured example? Photo attached showing serial No. Cheers Matt

future event Yanks are back in Saddleworth 2011.
Toolman replied to berna2vm's topic in Future events and meetings
Thanks Tony. I will have a look at that. I've downloaded the video. I have my "Festung Alderney" book at the ready. Over the last few years we have been to Jersey and Guernsey (and sark). We went to Jersey before I was on the forum otherwise I would have said hello :-) Hope you enjoy the road run lads :-) I'll get it in my diary for next year. Cheers Matt -

I'd love to go but I'm off to Alderney on the 13th for a week. I think it clashes :-( We'll just have to convoy round hudds instead at a later date :-) -
Arrgh, i'm after 3 sterling mags and smokers! Good buy with the dizzy Andy :-)

I remember reading this years ago, it was about spraying cars outside. Wetting the ground around the vehicle cuts down the amount of dust getting blown onto the fresh paint. It's obvious really. Matt

Welcome james Good luck if you are a Saracen lover :-) Cheers Matt

Hello All the manuals are available here and free to download from this great site: http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/manuals.htm See page 78. Basically: IF the engine is running - select 1st gear on the gearbox (Gearchange pedal out) - Engine at Tickover, ferret stationary foot on footbrake - depress the gearchange pedal then quickly move the transfer box lever from Forward to Reverse (or Vice Versa) HOWEVER - If it is stuck in neutral you MUST stop the engine and get the transfer box in either Forward or Reverse before you start the engine. There is a Knack to doing this smoothly, which will come with practice.

Are you using ANR (yellow) or standard clansman boxes in the ferret+LR? -

Just an update. The ignition seems now to be all sorted, it fires up immmediately and runs well. However I still have some cutting out at higher speed and on hills. The timing is adjusted by ear and that seemed to be ok too. I've realised that if I keep the revs up and use a much lower gear then the ferret runs fine, So I reckon that the fuel pump is to blame afterall, it supplies enough fuel when the engine is at high revs (and hence the pump) as long as the load isn't too much. But at lower revs (2000-2500) under some load it cannot supply enough fuel and starts to splutter. I have a rebuild kit so thats the next job, in the meantime if I need to drive it I'll have to drive around in third at 3500 revs :-D Clive I'll get those condersers packaged up and sent off to you at some point. Cheers Matt

You can still get RSN 13P's however they are getting more hard to find so a bit more money (see below). RSN 12Y's are a commonly used replacement in the B60 and used in the J60. You could even go to RSN8's which were fitted the land Rovers with screened ignition, however these can't run as hot, so maybe best avoided unless you have Electronic ignition fitted as might foul up quicker in conventional ignition, take your pick: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Champion-RSN13P-screened-spark-plugs-Military-/360276803628?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item53e22bc02c http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4PCS-X-CHAMPION-SPARK-PLUG-RSD13P-RSN12Y-LAND-ROVER-/120719306364?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c1b6e6e7c http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-24-Volt-Screened-Spark-Plugs-RSN8-New-/220763485036?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item336687736c

Where's my Ferret :-) Yes, it was a really great event, thoroughly enjoyed it! Weather couldn't make up it's mind but we got plenty of doses of Hot sun. Great battles and Pyrotechnics, after seiving earth out of my beer that is :-) Great to meet a few guys from the forum, Ferretkitt, Berna, Bob and timbo to mention a few names (In no particular order :-D) MT -
Hello there Welcome to the Forum, I can see that Clive is already helping out with an electrical problem :-) Regarding the Gun mount, does the ferret have a MG mount already in the Turret? Ferrets were fitted originally with .30 Cal brownings but later replaced be GPMG's (General Purpose Machine Gun) There was a different mount for each gun. It you can post a few pictures of the mounting then we should be able to see which mount (if it has one) it's got. Also, would you mind confirming the Military Regaistration for the Ferret Register? Regards Matt

New Points, Lucas LR condenser and plugs fitted. It started immediately on first crank :-) I'm going to check the junction box and filter tomorrow and attemp to set the timing by ear. It does run a little uneven at tickover. Noticed that at least one of my drivebelts has started to perish. It's a fairly short run the Ponderosa on Sat so I'm going to chance it :-) (breakdown cover on standby) Does anyone have a pair of matched B60 drive belts they would like to part with (for cash) Cheers Matt Clive, I'll get this weekend over with and send a SAE with the condenser, thanks matt
