Tony B
I notice he's got a complete field kitchen. Perhaps he's got the green goddess for when the cooking goes all wrong. Toast a bit burnt?:rofl:
sirhc
Are any still held by the army in reserve?. No, I'm fairly sure that Withams had the lot and they were being replaced with something newer. Can't find the article now though.

Stormin
I took these on a shout in Battersea, during one of the firemans strike.Mid 70s ?. Interesting to see they have Civilian registrations rather than the usual army style, 2 digits, 2 letters, 2 digits. Anyone know the reason for this? Stormin
Yes.. they were never MoD vehicles, so never had MoD plates. So would the ones coming out of Witham's have been complete with a normal V5, ie already road registered? That'd be a £100 saving on the usual registration fee when presenting the cast vehicle form. Dave C
All Green goddess. LRs. Hose layers. Pipe layers, Mobile workshops.Bikini units. Field telephone and Coms units. Belonged to the Home Office and used by the Auxilury Fire Service (AFS). That gave then all Civiy No Plates, also many or the plates were county registered. The only makings on any of the vehicles was the AFS loco Dave C
radiomike7
The only makings on any of the vehicles was the AFS loco Dave C Don't forget 'Property of the Home Office' written on the side lockers of the RL and Commer pipe/equipment carriers.:-D Mike

Metroman
Looks a very tidy one!Would appear to be completely kitted so plenty to play with as well. I think these motors are a bit of a bargain at the moment if you can afford the fuel. No pictures of the pump in action? I had the camera, but to busy getting wet
Markheliops
Hi Phil. Glad to see you playing but you are supposed to put the water onto the fire - not yourself. Ta for the brekkie - nearly had to rent out Grasshopper to pay for it!!! The GG is fully kitted out as previously stated and I haven't seen a more complete and well maintained example for a long time. If there are any left at Withams, they won't have any kit and they will be the rough lot that weren't taken. Good buy Phil! As I am on here, I must say sorry to Grasshopper for the appalling taste of music in Phil’s car on the way home. "STEPS GOLD." EEK. Phil you have a great taste in motors but sort your music out. And don't blame the missus either. Markheliops
Metroman
I don't listen to cd's these days, to busy NOT reading the signs :coffee:
Brooky
What about the markings on the Landrover?i guess it says Fire. I hope the picture answers the question! They had AFS on the doors and the legend "property of the Home Office" above n/side front wheel. If anybody wants to delve deeper into the AFS fleet can I suggest a book called the Green Machine, published in the earlier 90's. It listed all the registration numbers of all the AFS fleet and as much history as the authorscould find, remeber that when it was written a lot of vehicles were still in store. Richard Farrant
I hadnt noticed that, probably civil defence stock, howabout the land rover markings? Catweazle, Are you refering to the Land Rover in the black & white shot of GG's at Battersea? They would be army Land Rovers, that one looks like an FFR version by the canopy, I think they were used as communication links and escorts for the GG's

Richard Farrant
Yes Richard comms that would make sence as the bedfords wouldnt of had any.Would they? I think the same procedures were used right up until the last time they were used. GG is 12 volt so it was easier to use army control vehicles as a link. The numbers would possibly be call signs, my guess is the GG would have some kind of inter vehicle radio link to the Land Rover . Ted will no doubt know more on this. Adam Elsdon
Just to throw in some more info, it wasnt just AFS kit that the Home Office supplied, the also had "Mobile Police Columns" my Austin Gipsy is a former Home Office Police vehicle. I'll get Croc over on this thread, he is the resident AFS expert!! there are also a number of good books on the subject, Green machine as previously mentioned and there is another which i cant remember!:-X
