Great War truck Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I posted this new thread a moment ago but it seems to have dissapeared. I thought that i should have another go, so here it is. Tony received a phone message to say that a local timber yard is to be cleared and that a WW1 truck chassis and a Jeep are to be scrapped. he went over today to have a look and found that the Jeep was a Series 1 Land rover (beyond redemption) and the chassis is much later, probably a Matador that looked like this: Not much of it left unless you need an axle. Joris Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I'm guessing you've got first dibs on the WWI chassis? Quote
Snapper Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Interesting. Must be some bits worth having.... MB Quote
Minesweeper Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I wonder if any Matador owner could confirm that this is a Matador? The axles, diffs and any other parts are available should they be of any use to anyone! Tony Quote
N.O.S. Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Experts needed here, but until they arrive, that definitely ain't a Matador axle or springs. The transfer box is puzzling me as is the hub. Quote
antarmike Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 The Auxiliary gearbox is matador, but the rest isn't. Looks like something built as a 4x2 converted to a 4x4 using AEC Transfer gearbox. Quote
Great War truck Posted June 2, 2008 Author Posted June 2, 2008 Interesting stuff. Here are some more photos of it: Does that give any more clues? Tim (too) Quote
Richard Farrant Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Tim, A lot of features on this chassis of a "Commer cab" Ford, the post war 2E, 3E or 4E. The front hubs look like Ford WOT6, but must be same parts used on the 2E. The rear brake cyls, track rod, springs and hangers are all 2E style, not sure about the transfer box though. I am going for a Ford 2/3/4E, if it has a winch, then it is a 4E 4x4 3 tonner. Quote
antarmike Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Is this yard not far from Luton? somewhere near the village of Lilley? I think I was offered this vehicle for sale 20 years ago! (but I might be mistaken) Quote

Minesweeper Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 No, not that one! This one is in East Devon! Tony Quote
Snapper Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Here's a Commer cabbed Ford Thames E4 LAA at the closure of MAT Beverley. MB Quote
N.O.S. Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 If anyone is wondering what a "Commer Cab" Fordson looks like, this is one here. (But not at the same location) That is not "Commer cabbed Fordson", it is Rosebay Willowherb. Oh, by the way, there is an interesting old mv behind it  Quote
Snapper Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Thank you for that message from the grassy knoll....:-D Quote
Rick W Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 If anyone hasnt seen N.O.S. in the flesh here is a photo recently taken at the last MV show he attended..... Perhaps he could confirm this, but I believe he is a member of the re-enactment group the Titchmarsh Warriors, they meet every full moon under the big spotty toadstool behind the HMVF clubhouse... Snapper Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Yeah, creating their own mushroom cloud after too many slug ales. Maybe we need to get Frodo and Bilbo on board to start a whole new branch. We've got a gnome in our garden, he's dressed as an Arsenal player and I think the foxes pee on him. Hey ho! Quote
Great War truck Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 I was just about to write how impressed i was with peoples observations and identification of the truck chassis. Then i saw the gnome and started to worry. Anyway, well done everybody (just no more gnomes ok). Tim (too) Quote
Great War truck Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 I understand that the owner believes that it used to have a Ford engine. Tim (too) Quote

Minesweeper Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Just a little bit hazy about it all as it was his deceased father's - but he did say he thought 6 cylinders. I guess we shall never know for sure. Quote
Richard Farrant Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I understand that the owner believes that it used to have a Ford engine. Tim, If the chassis had a Matador transfer box fitted, there is all probability that it had a bigger engine in it, pity there was not a better pic of the engine bay, to see if it had been altered. A Ford 6D might have been a possibility. Quote

Thanks, I was just trying to make a connection with it having been a "Commer Cab" Fordson which would have had a V8. Quote
