MOT's

Was down the local Class VII testing station today getting the F-250 done and on the wall was a notice from the RMIF (Retail Motor Indistry Federation) advising of proposed Gov't changes to the MOT regime. Currently, as we know, it's first test at three years old then yearly thereafter. The proposed changes according to this notice are for the first test to be at four years then every two years thereafter.

Any one else heard about these proposed changes??

(The notice was also a petition to get the Gov't to abandon these changes - I get the impression due to loss of revenue for the Federations members.....)

Yep - such proposals are a matter of much debate for exactly the reason you identify - fear of loss of income and a a pro safety debate to justify it.

If really bored read it up here on the MOT tester forum

In New Zealand, everything, including trailers, caravans, fire engines and NZ Army vehicles all have to be tested (warrant of fitness) every 6 months. There are no considerations for age or use. All goods vehicles must have hub odometers for taxation purposes.

We are lucky here in the UK in some ways! (though not many....)

Here in the States there are only 12 states I believe that have state run inspection systems and those are Yearly or bi-yearly affairs the other 38 states don't have State Inpections it's left up to the vehicle owner to keep the vehicle in good operating condition , the incentive is if involved in an accident and you have faulty equipment then you may be in hot water . This of course does not apply to Commerical Vehicles which have to pass Federal Department of Transportation checks .

Having moved from a state with very tight controls on emission limits and windshield cracks < you were limited to an inch long crack if it were into the area sweeped by the wipers> some of the States require brake drums to be removed to check for wear , to a state without Vehicle inspections where some people will drive with several cracks spanning the entire width of the windshield and tires with several wear bars showing or hardly any tread on a tire or engines that you know have not been kept in tune in a long time ........Its hard to see these kinds of faults and not be bothered by them .

And yes when my old State went from a yearly to a bi-yearly program it was the inspection station owners who complained the most , not about unsafe vehicles being on the road longer.... it was the loss of money until the system had been through its cycle.of course they got an increase in their fee from 25 to 40 dollars per vehicle.

Yeah, apparently it's due to the fact that the MOT process is now computerised. Because the test has to last at least 40 minutes ( if it doesn't the computer will not accept the test has been done ) and as so many small village garages have stopped doing MOT because of the added expenses, added to the sheer amount of vehicles on the road now days there is simply not enough time to test every vehicle eligible each year.

Another idea being proposed is to make all test stations like HGV test centers where the vehicles go down lanes conveyor belt style and the test lasts about 20 minutes. Having seen how slick an HGV center is and the speed and efficiency that the vehicles are processed, to me this has to be the way to go.

Regards

Richard
