ArtistsRifles
Any one else here indulge in the alternative hobby of making scale models of MV's - either of your own vehicles or ones you would like to have been able to own?? Just curious!!!!
StealthyMarksman
Ahh modelling. One of my favourite past times :-D Can't get models of our vehicles unfortunatley, but I build alot of other post war vehicles (Pink Panther on its way ) Just out of interest, what is everyones favourite scale? Mine has to be 1/35, but I know alot of people favour 1/48... Harry
AlienFTM
Rowlocks. I was 3/4-way through crafting a reply when I hit a wrong key due to having ThinkPad on lap instead of in docking station and a real keyboard and lost it. [sulk] Maybe when this thread takes off I'll try again, but not now.
Tony B
There are some shots on the Dodge forum of a display of models done in the US. It is superb. the models are all about about 1/8 scale, with figures and covered about 27 sq feet. Would make quite a talking point at a show. ArtistsRifles
For vehicles - 1/35th is the preferred scale - takes up minimum room whilst giving max detail. Anything bigger presents space problems, anything smaller and, for me, there is insufficient detail. Right now I'm about to try out acrylic (water based) paints in lieu of the traditional enamels. snowtracdave
I love finding kits of the actual vehicles I own or have owned . Unfortunately -and only from that point of view - I always seem to pick vehicles which are so obscure that nobody produces them in miniature form. Still looking for a model of my (civvy)1936 Series Two 10cwt Morris , double cab 406 Unimog , '78 Ford Falcon Ute . Came across a number of survivors from my very much earlier days when going through stuff in the loft of my late dad's house including the large scale Airfix (?) Spitfire which was my reward when I learned to walk again when I was around 11 or 12 . Happy days . D
yogi
1.35th is my preferred scale anything smaller than than normally ends up the hoover or in the dog. Mainly modern British subjects but ran out of options. Found a company in Scotland called Accurate Armour but the prices were a bit on the steep side. It was either my model tanks or the wife. I DO MISS HER    .
ArtistsRifles
Accurate Armour are a good bunch - you want expensive though, try Firing Line - my Stalwart was £70!!! 1/35th resin, cast metal and photo etched brass though..... Like all things - evilbay can be a good source for the odd things. I managed to source both a Dragon 1/35th BMP-1 (reckoned to be the best of the available offerings) and a PanzerShop resin conversion kit for the OT-90 variant. N.O.S.
Dear Doctor Rifles, I must have as many unopened kits as unrestored vehicles. I just don't know which way to turn - what should I do? Yours desperately,
ArtistsRifles
Dear frustrated N.O.S. Do what I did - get your employers to move your work to Germany on a cost saving basis resulting in your becoming retired early with a commensurate wad of cash - this solves both of those problems. :-) However it will, in a short while give you another in regards to feeding the fuel tanks of the projects - however that is a future issue to be addressed later on. :-) My bill for consultation will follow!!! Jessie The Jeep
I bought a 1/35 scale Jeep and trailer in 2005 to build and measure before buying a real Jeep. Space was tight in the garage because of my aircraft trailer, so I built and measured the model, then scaled up the dimensions to see if it would fit. The measurements said there would be 1 inch each side of the jeep to fit next to the trailer. I bought the Jeep, and as it happens there was 1 1/2 inches each side! http://www.sacarr.co.uk/jeep/newjessie/garage2.jpg[/img] This year I measured the model trailer to see if one of those would fit.... It does, just....... http://www.sacarr.co.uk/jeep/trailer/garage1.jpg[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/jeep/trailer/garage2.jpg[/img] Steve
abn deuce
yikes! it just does, of course the only other way would have been to find the life size original and measure it , but having the fun of building the model would not be had . well done ... shame about the limited storage but I think thats the thing that limits our hobby the most. The options are limited but thats where forming a Museum starts to make sense to get a larger commercial space and others to help share the costs are the positives the negatives are some will have to travel further than others to get to their vehicles
Tony B
Nah, can't beat one to one :-D
Jonny666
my fave scale is 1/35 and 1/48 as there are somethings you cant get in whichever scale, and i will build just about anything lol but then again i do have a 1/6 M5 stuart thats full R/C lol
Chappers
1/1 scale is all I have time for at the moment although I used to spend many hours building 1/24 Airfix aircraft kits.I still have about 30-40 various scales awaiting to be assembled from the late 70's. Jessie The Jeep
I used to work in a model making company that did lots of MOD work. Here are a few examples of projects I was involved with. On the warships, I usually ended up making all the little deck vehicles, helicopters, landing craft etc. Boughton Barracuda Airfield Fire Tender - 1/35 Scale Resin Cast http://www.sacarr.co.uk/models/other/7barracuda.JPG[/img] 155mm Howitzer - 1/12 Scale Resin cast http://www.sacarr.co.uk/models/other/15_155mm_howitzer.JPG[/img] HMS Ocean Assault Ship - 1/200 & 1/100 Scale Vac formed hull, Brass/styrene/resin superstructure. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/models/other/16lph1.JPG[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/models/other/17lph2.JPG[/img] RAS Vessel - 1/200 Scale Vac formed hull, Brass/styrene/resin superstructure. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/models/other/18ras.JPG[/img] Steve
Snapper
Model making is something I'll do when I've won the lottery. I have a house full of unmade stuff which James and I were going to do before he discovered the bass guitar and I started to lose my eyesight. We also collected Minitanks and 1/87 scale mvs, Infact, auntie Rifles, I have four partially completed BMP1s in 1/87 from sdv. My love has always been diecast - but have run out of room and impetus. My favourite recent discovery is Authenticast of the USA who made solid cast recognition models for the US government. Ships, plans and mvs - in various scales.. I got a Pershing, a Panther and a Centurion from a shop in Rye - £8 the lot.. When I checked them up I think the Panther might be £400 on it's own - but there are many remakes as the dies were sold on. Don't care - because I love them and that's that. sean101ryan
I used to build a lot of models, was heavily in to 1:16 scale trucks at one point. Only thing I have now is a 1/16 Tamiya RC Tiger 1. Keep drooling over Mark 1 Tanks 1/6 Challenger 2 but at nearly 3 grand with all the trimmings it's probably not going to happen. A 1/12 RC Cat D8 with rope blade by CCM in steel and brass may happen though. Another side line is railways and live steam narrow gauge in 16mm is a project next year in the garden. Could even keep it military as you can get WD pattern wagons and a WD Baldwin tank engine these days.
