I cannot see on that page, what is the outer diameter, and is the lenght only 1 meter?? you will need a total of about 8 meters, the longest piece to the taillamp is about 2 meter.

Why would you want it covered with cotton, this is totally not original!

Cheers,

Lex

Hi,

I bought a cable with an external diameter of 4 mm.
I've already washed off the inscriptions.
I'll try on the ends tomorrow.

Many thank's.

Another problem is the regulator. I bought it from Hitchcocks 20 years ago. Unfortunately, it has a different mounting. I'll try to make it as original as possible. Electrically it's ok.

Cheers

Pawel

Pawel that is an Indian made version of the post war MCR2 regulator. (I've never known one to work for more than a few weeks)

You need the shorter MCR1 with frame tube mounts. Jan can make the conversion parts to clamp on frame if you want.

There are very good electronic internals on the market that will easily fit in both types

Thanks Ron,
I think mine had rubber grips. In the photo of the prototype from the REME Museum and on motorcycles from the beginning of the war, rubber is visible.

Next question:
Should the upper chain guard be attached as in the photo?

Cheers

Hi,

I need help again.
Wasn't there a switch from dip beam to main beam on my bike?
There was only one headlight?
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for 1939/40 motorcycles?
I only have a diagram for models from 1949 and younger with a dipper switch.

Cheers

Pawel

Yes, you're in luck. I recently bought a small quantity of pre-war Lucas wiring diagrams which included this November 1939-dated scheme "For Motorcycles used by H.M. Forces". It confirms what I found on my BEF-abandoned 1939 Norton...that WD machines from the outbreak of war were fitted with a dip switch along with the WD-type OTLH four-position main switch.

Incidentally, MCR1 CVC regulators dated between September 1939 and mid-1942 were marked "Lead-Acid" to distinguish them from the Ni-Fe type that had been the pre-war standard WD fitment. It's only really noticeable on Nortons though, due to the location above the tool box.

However here is the diagram and text explaining about the headlamp bulb from my 1940 3SW and 5SW maintenance manual.  It must be a generic diagram as it mentions the Norton Big 4 sidecar in the small print at the bottom.

Is there a print date on that, Ron ? The DME Circulars list gives a May 1941 date for removing the dipper switch and fitting "New type headlamp mask" (which would be the steel type rather than the card with a hole).

It would make sense if the switch was deleted when the new masks were introduced. As far as I can tell, Nortons altered on production machines during the early part of 1941.

Diagram W2053A clearly came later than W2049.
