Vehicle paint and markings

Hi folks,

I have just bought a Bedford QL and it will need painting before the next show season. Can anyone tell me what colour I should be painting it (will be depicting late war) and where is best to get the paint. For my US vehicles I have always used Warpaint.

Secondly, how is the best way to apply Divisional / units markings? (I am not very good at painting!!!). Can these be bought as stencils or do I need to get someone with a steady hand to do it for me.

I am hoping to "badge it up" as a vehicle belonging to the REME workshops attached to 5th AGRA (Army Group Royal Artillery) which is the unit my dad was attached to. Unfortunately, his memory is failing so any help with which specific markings I need is most welcome.

Thanks,

Mark

I am in the same boat as mark, I am we'll in to the restoration of a scammell sv2s and would like some help with markings also, who operated the scammells during the war ?, it is hopefully going to Normandy next year so would this have a bearing on the markings, all suggestions appreciated. By the way mark I can probably see your house from where I live, send me a pm so we can get in touch. John.

For vehicle colours, the self-published books by Mike Starmer will give you everything you need - and include accurate colour chips.

For vehicle markings you have two options - one easy to find - the other not so nowadays

The easy option is the recent four volume Warpaint series by Dick Taylor - published by Mushroom Model Publications (MMP) and still available from the major specialised booksellers

The harder option - but worth the search - is the Cannon Publications reprint (with significant additions) of the classic Almark Book on British Military markings 1939-45. Go for the cannon reprint rather than the Almark original - there is so much more in it.
