Maurice
Hi all , I found a WW2 Laundry trailer , plate on Chassis tells me that it was made by J.B&Co Ltd, I can`t find any info on it , it is a 4 wheeled trailer on 10.50x16 tires , got an Austin engine with generator in it , a boiler washer ,hydro extractor, tumbler ,and dryer . the only picture I have is on page 186 from the book Canada`s fighting vehicles Europe 1943-45. Hi Maurice, I knew there was information on Laundry trailers in the official history of REME during WW2, but the descriptions of the trailers do not meet yours, power came to the 8 x trailers that made up the laundry, from a separate trailer with a 24kw Lister generator. No mention of any other gennys, looks like yours is a smaller self contained unit and seeing page 186 in your Canadian data book, it is a Type B comprising of 4 x trailers, and the one I have a description of is the Type A. JB & Co. was Brockhouse regards, Richard
Maurice
thanks , 1st picture is the same chassis , but different interior , 2nd is the same as the one I found , genny is on the right hand side , boiler on left . , trailer was still in the army at least till 1984 , because of stenciling on the back. Richard Farrant
Maurice, sounds like an interesting find! The top picture appears to be an Albion gun tractor in the foreground, probably their motive power to tow the trailers. Like the german helmet over the headlamp! RecyMech
The German helmet as a blackout cover....:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I had to go back for a second look, missed it first time. It looks perfectly natural sat there. Squaddie humour, old school. H Edited November 19, 2012 by RecyMech spelling

That is in remarkable condition, has it been restored or is it just out of service? Maurice, if you bring it to Normandy, we will bring our washing round

Richard Farrant
no it is just as it was released , and then put indoors. Maurice, On your version, does it have enough equipment to do the whole operation or does it work in conjunction with another trailer? The info I found was on the larger set up which had about 9 trailers.
Maurice
this is the version which can be used single , but was operated in a group of 4 , this trailer has boiler , hot and cold water tank ,washing machine ,dryer, boiler , hydro extractor ,and tumbler. The washer has a full brass interior , all well made . I got a spark on the plugs , petrol reaches carburettor , but it will not roar into life , wiould there be anywere on the world still a manual be for these ? Maurice, If you mean a manual for Austin engine only, I think it could be the same as the Austin 10 Tilly. But for the whole equipment, might be worth trying the REME Museum at Arborfield, quoting the details from the Canadian Data book that you found it in. wally dugan
Maurice In the Ministry of Supply book of Wheeled vehicles, there is reference to your trailer, described as "trailer 5 ton 4 wheeled laundry ccs" which lists the equipment found inside this trailer. It is very brief, the only difference being, it states the tyres are 10x 50x 13. But these could have been changed. I would suggest that you contact the RLC museum Deepcut, as it would appear this equipment was operated by RASC personnel. Wally
Matt W
Hi Maurice, Do you have it's army registration number please? Thanks
REME 245
I believe there were a number of these trailers in rebuilt condition in Jacksons Yard at one time. I know someone who brought one as a garden shed and scrapped all the contents!
Maurice
I will have a look tomorrow , registration plate and rebuilt plate are still on it , the tires are dated 1949, and WD
Maurice
Hi Maurice, Do you have it's army registration number please? I just looked , and the number is 85yn45. I had a close look at the entrance door tops , under the canvas flap there are 2 holes for a tubular frame , so there must have been a canopy of some sort for in front of it . les freathy
Richard is correct on that as both makers supplied chassis for the laundry bodies
