Thanks Simon, more coming :-)

The engine is certainly looking better than when I got her. All new gaskets to cure the oil leaks, new 12v coil and alternator, new spark plugs and a new fuel pump (it had the original pump on it with the tin bowl, but I wanted to be able to see the condition of the fuel flowing in it).

While this was happening my "chippy cuz" was making the new packers for the cargo bed. And my Uncle set about the Brakes. 2 new front wheel cylinders and a good clean up all around and for the first time i had a proper feeling brake pedal 8-)

I then set about the wirring. I had already made the front wiring looms, so all I had to do was connect it all up to the fuse box and connect the battery. To my utter amazent it all worked :-o :-D.

I also fitted the exhaust, which due to not being able to get the correct 1 i had to fabricate myself. I got a GMC back box from Rex and then a length of exhast tube and a 90o bend, then bolted it all together with exhaust clamps and way it went :-D

I had already cleaned and primed the brush guard and side steps, and due to running out of paint and a show coming up, i re-fitted them while in red oxide. The cargo bed at this point was being shot blasted at the commercial garage next door, and when it done i red oxide primed that too.

With just 3 days to go before the Torbay Steam Rally ( I collected the truck there in 2006 so I was determined she would return this year). I had to get the cargo bed back on and the rear lights sorted. With time running out I elected to leave the rear lights for now and wired a trailer board instead. With the cargo bed back on I was able to get her back on the road and out to the Steam Rally on the Friday night so she was there for the show 8-)

Thanks everyone for comments. Yes I am realy pleased with her now she back together and running.

Unfortunately while playing football last Tuesday I tore the Crushiat ligament in my left knee, so I am now unable to bend or straighten it. I have been signed off work for 3 weeks, but can't do anything to the truck as I can't lift anything or even climb into the cab :-( . Hopefull I can coerce some friends round and I can sit and delegate with my foot up  . Have a couple of shows at the beginning of September I would like to take her to so fingers crossed :-)

Don't worry Nige, I can always hit him over the head with the Bazooka if he gets out of hand. Or we can ply him with cider again, that slows him down a bit :-D .

You know I never thought of it like that. Maybe I should wear more safety kit next time I play. Not sure if I will see the ball coming from behind a welding mask though

Nice work Pop. Shes looking great!

Do you have rear mudguards tucked away somewhere? If you dont, or if yours are a bit screwed, Vehicles of Victory manufacture replacements, they look superb and they're not expensive at all.

I like your front tyres, they look like the early WW2 tread pattern, did they come with the truck or did you find some?

Nigel,

You obviously haven't seen his truck. My family say prayers before being followed by Paul, especially down steep gradients :shake:

  • 10 months later...

I haven't posted here for a while, so I thought I would update you all. Since doing my knee in and having 3 months off work last year and unable to do any work to the Chevy it all came to a halt. I managed to start work again in November, but only doing the odd bit here and there. I had an operation on my knee at the begining of February, by the end of March I was fit enough to get a crack on.

The cargo bed was removed again so it could be painted and the cab/chassis given a coat of paint too. It was a different shade of OD from what I had before so I had to take the bed off so i could get a good coat on the back of the cab and front of the bed.

I also had to fit the rear light brackets and make the holes for them to show through and for the trailer socket.

I also had the bumperettes to fit (I had some GMC ones that I bought off Rex Ward last year). Because they are GMC bumperettes they needed to be modified as the Chevy ones are a different shape. After attacking them with a Plasma cutter and grinder they were ready to be bolted on and primed.

Next it was time to get the paint on, and fortuneatly we had good spell of weather that allowed me to get the bad and truck painted.

My cousin (coneniently a chippy) came over and we made up the new troop seats. I have one complete but the other seat and front panel still need the old metal work cleaning and priming, but the wood is all cut and drilled ready for me to bolt together.

With the back on I made up the frame and then the new floor for the tool locker under the cargo bed floor.

Finally today I have been over and given the whole truck a final blow over to ensure it all comes out the same colour, and I have given inside the cab a coat too. Also all the little bits of light and mirrors and the steps and brushguard have been painted, so all going well tomorrow I will be able to bolt everything back together.

Once its all together I just need to make up the wiring loom for the rear lights and finish off the interior loom for the panel lights, then get the stencils on. I have the wood for the floor boards coming next week and hopefully I can get the troop seats finished too as its going to Buckfastleigh in 2 weeks. I have hood bows, but I need to put new wood in them, before I can use them, but I'm not too worried about a rear canvas at the moment, but I want to get one by September if I can.

I have found 2 mudgurads but I haven't got them yet. I did ask Bob at VOV, but postage alone for a pair of mudguards was $125, and that was just for the mudguards and not for the supports so they would have to shipped seperately.

The front tyres came with it. They were fitted when it was owned by the Museum in Kent.

Thanks guys. And what a difference a day makes. I have reasembled the front end and wired up the front lights, started on the rear loom but ran out of wire for the tail lights, fitted the rear lights and reflectors, re-fitted the windscreen and side steps, taken off the nasty vinyl covers on the seats, to find the original covers in not to bad condition, and painted all the new shiney nuts and bolts after fitting all the gubbins.

I am taking it to a veterans day event next Saturday, so before then I just need to finish the rear loom, remove and paint the wheels, try to get a few stencils on.

Then in 2 weeks time I am taking it to its first proper rally of the season at Devon MVT's War on the Line at Buckfastleigh railway station, so by then I hope to have fitted the new floor to the cargo bed, painted and fitted the new troop seats, wired up the panel lights in the cab and finally apply the rest of the stencils.
