steveo578
ajmac Is the post war diesel engine considerably more powerful than the Petrol that was originally fitted, Not that much differenceOriginal Praga -Scania vabis 1664 had an output of about (120hp) the Swiss Sauer Arbon had about the same, obviously the torque would be better. Historically the Hetzer was approx 16ton against 10ton for the Pz38(t) although the road speed 25mph was the same, so probably the overall performance is sluggish compared to the Pz38(t). The Hetzer used the enlarged suspension system of the PzKfw38(t) Neuer Art (new model) which weighed 15ton and had it retained the Praga NR diesel (rated at 260hp) of this model the Hetzer would have had a very lively performance. Guderian as chief inspector of armoured vehicles wanted a 150-170hp version of the Tatra 928 be fitted- being a 90degree Vee motor it could have been fitted in the style of the Saurer Arbon -possibly the 60degree Vee Praga NR was too big to be used in the Hetzer which was very space limited. If I remember correctly a modernised Tatra 928 is the same motor as fitted to the OT64.
diver99
Wheels and Tracks No. 7 has an article about a Hetzer to G13 and back, googled the name and it gives this link; http://www.lerenfort.fsnet.co.uk/page44N.htm If you have seen it I apologise, but if not enjoy, also the link to other Hetzer stuff within the article. gritineye
The final reduction gear cases have now been removed. These are of welded construction, welds cleaned up in a lathe. Some water inside under a layer of oil. Fortunately the oil kept the oxygen out so little damage done
gritineye
These are breathers, presumably shielded to keep oil out of them. These are just hollow bolts that vent to inside the hull.
gritineye
The other side is a bit of a disappointment though. Lack of an any oil layer meant oxygen and rust. The bearing are beyond use. But luckily the gears seem OK under the rust, good German steel..
eddy8men
looks very nice, even the rusty side is in good condition if it all goes as well as that you will be in for a nice enjoyable restoration. good luck eddy
Niels v
Is the owner going to have new gears made or is it possible to reuse the rusty ones?

gritineye
Is the owner going to have new gears made or is it possible to reuse the rusty ones? Gears seem OK, the clean teeth at the bottom have only been rubbed with a finger and look fine, the small gear looks the same. Niels v
what are the cause of the cracks in the bottom? mine/explosion damage or just fatigue
the_shadock
hello, thanks for the photos. I wondered what happened to this tank since 2006, when it was seen at Tankfest. I'm glad to see that it will get some TLC . From what I can see, this G-13 is M-78083 (this is the Swiss registration number painted at the front and rear). all the best Pierre-Olivier http://the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_Panzers.html
daz76
Thanks for posting more photos Gritineye. How easy is it to get new parts like bearings etc for something like this? Are there specialists who supply them or will the owner have to search for originals? Good to see it has been taken into restoration, although I suspect there is a fair bit of work to do yet!
Grasshopper
Thanks for posting more photos Gritineye. How easy is it to get new parts like bearings etc for something like this? Bearings will be metric, so should be quite easy to obtain. fesm_ndt
I reckon the hole cutter weighed the plates in, (how did he sneak them out in his lunch bag?) the holes will be filled with regular steel, this presents a problem, grinding and filling the welds will not disguise the change in surface texture, new against the original, to any one but the casual observer. I'm a bit slow on the uptake on this thread as only just seen it today  For some odd reason I was thinking the same thing the other day, perhaps after looking at Eddy's swiss cheese Cromwell and also saw it metioned that carriers have a particuliar armour surface profile. I guess welding up the holes is fairly easy, but the subsequent ginding leaves an distintive surface. Was thinking is it possible to: - use dental putty to do a profile replica - spray on spray putty and roll the profile over it Sorry these are the mad and delusional ideas that occur when I dont sleep

Then it will all need distressing (Antiques Roadshow speak) to blend in.. Started on the floor now.. This is an interesting bit don't you think?
