coastal mounting

Recommended Posts

What do you reckon this coastal mounting was for? About a meter and a half across maybe. No sign of any other associated structure, bolt holes, studs or the like in the vicinity. Good observational strategic position. Not the usual run of things by any means.

Quick guess especially in a costal battery the size sounds right for a optical convergence range finder.

You don't say where the mounting is.

Imagine a pair of binclars with long arms at right angles. The optics are in each arm. When you look through you will se etwo images. By twisting the focus to bring the images together, 'Converge' you can read the range off a scale. Thet is then passed to the guns. The usual is one range finder per gun, but if the site is surveyed in the the devation can be applied to each gun site.

The only picture I have of one is the replica 2 metre coverd unit at Lothriegin.
