  1. Neil, I believe the 6x6 one may be XFO 274 formerly with 'Lady Jane' on the front. Bash it in to Google and there are several photos of it at shows. Shame they fitted a non standard tilt to it in place of the correct pattern. Out of interest and never having driven one, what was the issue with the brakes? I seem to remember they only had a single actuator each side on the bogie and the compressor was nailed on the back of the gearbox rather like a Matador. I still remember starting one up at L W Vass many years ago and spending 15 mins trying to work out how to stop it:red:
  2. When it splitters and dies, have you still got sparks? If not, the most likely culprits are the condenser or coil, both can break down when hot.
  3. I did say apparently but if you google search 'sherman dd donald duck' there are 2 pages of results which suggests more than urban myth or pub talk.
  4. Apparently the Sherman M4 duplex drive was known as the DD, hence the nick name.
  5. Yours was hardly loaded heavily, they were designed to tow a trailer with a second loaded pallet at a gross weight of over 50 tons. Either it is overheating due to low coolant, a clogged radiator, fan clutch u/s, failed thermostat or you have a faulty gauge or sender unit giving false readings. If you have access to a spare instrument cluster, the gauges are all interchangeable with the exception of the voltage one.
  6. Saw it today on the back of a low loader heading up the A43 in the direction of Brackley, looked very impressive.
  7. Cosrec, did I see your Foden at Kibworth, what have you replaced it with after all that work?
  8. I have the C6 servicing manual with the relevant torques and sequence, PM me your email address and I will try to scan the pages. It looks like the oil feed to the valve gear is via a hollow stud halfway along each head on the left side just above the camshaft but I can find no indication of an O ring, just the head gasket.
  9. Nick, is your Millie having to live outside while just in red oxide primer? I have had some very variable results with different types, some have only survived a month on new steel before spots of rust were showing.
  10. http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/,31,/45849/EKA.htm Mick Walters has successfully fitted one to an S26 DROPS: Dave crouch was also breaking Foden recoveries and should be able to help, do bear in mind the Foden EKA kit is seriously heavy and will affect the stability quite badly.
  11. Witham have some 14R20 runflats in their current auction, does anyone know what is involved in removing the runflat inserts? The tyres look to be conventional Continentals rather than being specifically designed for runflat operation and the wheels look to be a heavy duty plant type with a sealing ring between the wheel and outer flange, does anyone recognise the part number? http://www.mod-sales.com/auction/vehicle/related/66139/4_x_Continental_14.00_R20_Tyres.htm They would be destined for an Explorer but would have to be used with tubes.
  12. That is in amazing condition for having been stored outside, I have seen several that have literally fallen to pieces. I remember them well from the auctions, a nice one would make £600 while the RLs were more popular and made up to £1k. Now all you need is a Bikini unit....
  13. Think we have had this one before but always good for a laugh on a rainy day. Wot a plonker as Del Boy would say...
  14. That is quite correct Trevor but some engines also use the hollow pushrods to supply oil to the top end, the Ford Essex V6 being one that I remember. The cam follower had a window in to an oil gallery and a small hole in the top that lined up with a hole in the hardened ball in the pushrod
  15. I expected it to make slightly more than that, it was almost fully kitted out, nicely restored, had good tyres and a diesel conversion, all it needed was a pair of bonnet sides. What did surprise me was the £9.8k+commission for the WW2 era 7.5ton recovery trailer, I have seen several of these weighed in over the years for next to nothing.
  16. £14,560 with buyers premium + vat
  17. Have you tried Goodridge at Exeter? Exeter Airport Business Park, Fair Oak Close, Exeter, EX5 2UP, United Kingdom t.+44 (0) 1392 369090 f.+44 (0) 1392 441780 sales@goodridge.net
  18. The restoration team keep referring to a 'genuine AEC engine' but is that not a Tylor JB4 or was Tylor part of AEC? http://archive.commercialmotor.com/article/26th-may-1925/10/of-interest-to-users-of-tylor-engines Also what was the thinking with the chain gearbox, was it to stress the case in compression rather than tension which would occur with gears or was it quieter than running straight cut gears?
  19. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Avro-Lancaster-Bomber-Flight-/251519471501 Now at just over $51k with 2 days to go. My late father in law would have a good chuckle about this, he flew 102 ops in bombers and the nice guys at Bomber Command paid all the expenses. Much as he admired the Lanc it was just a tool for the job in hand.
  20. Bill, cannot help with chassis numbers but the facelift chrome grill models were introduced circa 1958, certainly pre 1960.
  21. Is that the ex HIAL one from Stornoway by any chance??
  22. Wrecker is a description we seem to have inherited from over the pond, in the English language it is 'someone who wrecks or destroys'. Many years ago I had a severe ticking off from a REME officer when I referred to his Fodens as wreckers:embarrassed: "They are recovery vehicles, they don't go out wrecking anything" he barked.
  23. With respect Dan, neither the AFS or REME used wreckers, as per the thread title they were recovery vehicles and as you rightly say they manned by Reccy Mechs not Wrecky Mechs:cool2:
