  1. US Army, also the Checz were designing and building 37 and 47 mm AT, most of which ended up in German hands. Several were sited in fortifications in Jersey.Given the layout and weapons I suspect French 1930s.
  2. you can use a 28 volt bulb in a 24 volt system, it's like fuses. A 24 volt bulb is capable of taking more than 24 volts. The 24 volt is only a mean voltage they will charge at about 29 or 30 volts at full chat, just as a 12 volt system should charge at about 13.6. check that instrument lights aren't 12 volt. Some Saracens use a split voltage sytem. A truck or motor factor should have them.
  3. The water bed I ended up with last year was quite exciting, thought the river had burst its banks. Still it was a good laugh. That guy that did the Spive is amazing his patter is worth the trip alone.
  4. At least we know who gets the next washroom duty. Given to the man that has the kit to pull the various foreign bodies out that people have been putting down them. Wonder if I could talk my bosses into getting an ARV to recover the buses? Some of the places you'd need the armour.
  5. Withams as usual, friends have just bought a Quad from them, with a winch :schocked: Great toys but expensive.Apparently British forces are going off them a bit, but have just bought some Yamahas. It may work out cheaper to buy one new and paiunt it green.
  6. While all the Jeep and Jimmy owners are posing for photos, as usal the Dodges are doing all the **** jobs. Not that we Dodge owners really care, we just know we have the best all round vehicles ever built.
  7. Blimey Kevin :schocked: If you need an ARV for recovery what are you into?
  8. Ho Glasshopper, factory prepared Bio diesel is great stuff in straight injected engines. The problem seems to be with common rail and electronic injections systems, if the fuel burn doesn't push the right buttons on the sensors the computer throws a hissy fit and all shuts down. Ethanol is great substitute for petrol, Brazil has been using it for years. Eire did a lot of research adding LPG to diesel, a lot of vehicles there are LPG. The technology exists but until governments stop making stupid regulations about how emissions are measured and insist all new vehicles use catalytic converters there is no incentive for manufacturers to design vehicles to work on alternatives.
  9. I hope to have the body and perhaps the para bike there. Was a great show last year despite weather. Managed to drink brewery dry, but I did have help!. :schocked:
  10. Wanna co-driver? Pretty please! There was just such a beast at the top of the hill for a long time. It dissappeard in somewhat mysterious circumstances some years ago. had no reverse gear at the time.
  11. About to upset Jack again. Try talking to the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela. Our Kenny has, they are now supplying cheap fuel to TFL. As they also tried to dump oremulsion of the CEGB some years ago, I'm waiting to see the air quality counts. the problem is whatever type of fuel, cost is reflected by the current fad. LPG is only cheap because of tax concessions, where as Bio diesel, which has all sorts of economic advantages attracts none.

No but when I was a kid we had half a dozen ponies graving in a cider apple orchard on windfalls. The Scotttish vet was jealous they got free booze.
  13. Did try something similar on our fleet. the old Dennis no problems, the newer Evos and the Volvos. Well the recovery company declared a bonus. :shake:
  14. I've still got the pictures of peoples faces at the trial load at Redhill :-D for a small consideration....
  15. Could well be a Dodge, the one used by Pershing is preserved in the Dodge musuem. There is also if I can find it again, a picture on the web of a Mk4 British Tank about to go over a Dodge tourer ( Jeep owners stop sniggering)
  16. Well put it this way, a history teacher said to me ' I don't know of any teacher who doesn't introduce the First World War, without using clips from Blackadder'. :argh: to start with the correct designation is 'The Great War', no one called it the first world war at the time or afterwards, BECAUSE they didn't know there was going to be a SECOND. most knowledge kids have of WW2 seems to come form video games. :dunno: PS During 2005 the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Channel Islands, teachers were told not to refer to Germans but' Foreign Occupying Powers'.
  17. Having been out at Ieper, during this August, I can assure you that all the cemeteries in the Salient are in superb order. The work done by the CWG is an example second to none. The other thing that always strikes me is the respect shown to such sites by the people of Belgium. There is group, No Man's Land famous from TV's The Trench Detectives who would be very grateful for a copy of the letters etc. Information such as this helps place units specifically at locations and times. Andrew Robertshaw, now director of the RLC museum at Deepcut is a member, as well as being a renowned expert on the Great War. I know a lot of the guys and can assure you from the depth of my soul that all such information would be treated with respect and treasured.
  18. Um, would need very careful application of heat to prevent hot spots. Cast iron can very fragile. At least now you can get a relatively cheap stand off infra red thermometer to check if the heating is uniform. I know Maplins sell them for about £35, can be very useful for checking circulation in radators etc.
  19. Just been playing, very impressed. :-D
  20. I use the Fuji 9500s after upgrading from a 5600. would throughly recommend it. It does most things an SLR will do plus video with sound. The lens is superb and saves having to carry a box full of bits around.
  21. Slight drawbacks. Vegtable Oil when used in catering is food, in UK Zero VAT. As soon as you use it in a vehicle it is non food and subject to VAT at 17.5%. if caught exceeding the allowances by the Customs & Excise, bearing in mind they can test at random and can enter premises WITHOUT a warrant, deep do-do. Waste vegtable oil is classified by EEC as hazardous waste and requires a permit to dispose of it. Honestly you couldn't make it up. Sunflower oil is the best it is so volatile when hot that mills preparing it are classified an explosion risk. There is a large factory at Woolwich which prepares vegtable oils, great fun when 180 tons of the stuff decides to go bang. Though most diesels will run on SVO bear in mind the calorie count is much lower compared to Straight Diesel, and as far as I know only Bosch guarantee their injectors with bio diesel or SVO. I did it years ago on an old single cylinder dump truck, mixed the oil with paraffin. It does work but without a lot of grief it is really only an option on multi fuel engines. Straight diesels will probably need the injection timing doing.
  22. PS rope is usual measured by circumference not diameter.

There was a case back in days of yore when a group of mechanics found a bottle of Cherry Brandy in a car in for service, they proceeded to drink it. Trouble is it was anti freeze. All ended up in hospital; and court. the ironic thing was Alcohol was part of the treatment. Moral of the tale. Always keep fluids in there own clearly marked containers.
  24. A very useful tool is an ultrasonic probe. Pour in un- gooing mix of choice and vibrate at 20,000Hz. Failing this if you have an air rattle gun stick a lump of wood in an old socket and place on the piston, shake the damn thing loose.
