  3. Came across this whilst hunting info : http://www.thewarillustrated.info/
  4. Old filmes: Especially a lot of the black and white British films, most of the actors had actually served and it shows! The drill, kit and reactions are real. New films: Keep remaking the classics and IT DON'T WORK!!!!! Especially when half the heroes spend half the film going on about their inner angst!
  5. So the delay was you putting the hay in the vault then? Diring the Great War the two most shipped items were ammunition and hay.
  6. My intrest has been piqued by a picture in the latest C.I.O.S. Review of Train Ferry No1 leaving Jersey just prior to Occupation carrying a number of RAF vehicles, I'm trying to get permission to post picture here. So far all I can find out is that the War Department had three ferries built in 1917 to serve the port of La Havre. After the Great War the ships were laid up, then went into commercial service and were requisitoned in 1939 Subsequently being renamed No1 as Princess Iris No 3 as Daffodil. Daffodil was converted to a landing ship and lost off Dieppe, were she can still be dived on. Princes Iris survived and went back to civillian service as SS Essex Ferry. I'd like to find out more about them. Can anybody suggest were to go looking?
  7. If I remeber correctly Shamrock or 'Club' is the marking for edible stores. So my guess (linking to cattle) good old bully beef tins.
  8. They are/were a favourite of RNLI to launch boats. Maybe that's what they were wanted for. County and the old Roadless made some bizzare tools in there time. County also do/did a 4x4 conversion for the Transit van. DERA had a few.
  9. Last project? Yeah till the next one. Mind you that will keep you busy for a bit.
  10. Should add Pytchley is a trade name for a company called Mears. They specialise in Equestrian gear. They made a solid, bl**dy heavy , very sweaty pure rubber ridng mac. These also became de'rigeur for motorcyle use.
  11. This might intrest you. A friend's late Farther was out there. George Mc Donald Frazer's Quatred Safe out Here is well worth reading to give you a flavour.
  12. The little Arrow was used on vehicles in the Far East. And the number style matches. As for the two small numbers being year of delivery. They didn't start building Dodge WC till 1941!

Yeah mate , that was me. The reason I know there Pigion boxes? I've got one! The Royal Signal Corp kept pigions during WW2 and post war.

  16. With my experience of the AA, what makes you think they'll be able to FIND you? Let alone fix anything. :banghead: :angry
  17. Funny enough, dropped into my local car supply shop this lunchtime, this was being mentioned. Also present wasa gentleman of the 'Tracked vehicle owner's' persuasion. He did admit to doing something with a 432 whilst reversing out of a driveway, pity it was mate's car! :-D Richard Le Brocq did sit an Abbot on top of a Merc as part of an arena show in Jersey. What was remarkable, the Merc fought back! Quite a sight an Abbot tetering on the roof of a Merc saloon. (Anyway, don't need a tank, I've got a bus!!)
  18. A lot of these type of coats were made by Belstaff, Barbour and Pythchley. Try them, they may have something in the archives.
  19. Whatever you do you will need the Compolsury Basic Training ticket. Might as well do the full test.
  20. There is a similar '37 pattern, only single divied, used to carry ration flasks.
  21. The best place for winter meetings is a warm pub with a roraing log fire! Dodge weapons carrier, with heater? Better work on doors first! Still, I have to say it is very satifsfying to be driving happily along in a 70 year old vehicle in the snow, whilst all the Modern BMWs are skidding helplessly on the rubber bands put round the wheels.
