  1. If that old banged about can went for that much, imagine how much more you'd get for a nice shiny new one ;-P Seriously though, is there a reason why it would go for so much? (eg rarity?)
  2. There's a company called CVRS in Darlington who refurbish gearboxes, I had a chat with them recently about my gearbox and they seemed a very helpful bunch
  3. Looks good. Presumably the tyres are road legal and have the EU mark etc etc? If so, I can see 00EC13 being treated at a new set in the near(ish) future..
  4. Amazing work and stories. Also very humbling
  5. When I was 18 or so, I was stopped for slowing down at a corner (perfectly legal etc) as the police took this to mean I may be DUI. A few years later I was also stopped by a car with about four policemen behind me. They pulled me over, two came out and asked if I knew what the speed limit was on that road (I did and I was travelling at it) then they walked back to their car and drove off. Much head scratching on my part!
  6. As far as I recall, the pig uses the same B60 engine that the ferret does. So you should be able to track one down without too much hassle. (I got a spare from a military jumble sale) Failing that (and if you are not bothered with having modern stuff working in your baby) you could get an electric pump to do the heavy lifting. If I'm talking mince then I'm sure someone will be along to correct me
  7. I used to know someone who served in ferrets in BAOR and in NI. He told me that the crews often used civvy gas cookers and thermos flasks in place of the issued kit. I wonder if that was common practice or just within his unit?
  8. Good luck restoring them. It'll be good to know some more Canadian ferrets will be saved.
  9. I have a vaguely amusing story about the time HMS Plymouth was visited by the local firearms officer police when she was in Glasgow. (She was privately owned at this point) He was here to inspect the ship and ensure we were not keeping anything dodgy onboard We led him around the ship, showing him the different weapons, eg 20 machine cannon (deactivated), the Limbo mortars, Sea Cat launchers etc. He hummed and ahhed, ticking things off on his clipboard and scribbling things down. When we finally reached the bow, he leaned on the front of the gun turret and asked in all seriousness where we were hiding the 4.5 inch guns. With an equally straight face I pointed out the two big black barrels sticking out of the front of the big grey turret he was using as a leaning post.
  10. I'm on it. (but not a fan of it) When you show up I'll do the addy friend /group thing.
  11. True :-D I'm just one of those people who knows that someone, somewhere, has tried it and I'm curious about the results.
  12. Just out of curiousity. Is there a "safe" ratio of diesel to petrol that could be run on a B60 or B81? Something along the lines of the engine is not too happy but it will run? Has anyone tried it or would it result in a big bang? (Not something I'm willing to try with 00 EC 13)
  13. Silly question I know but.. Did the "professional restorers" do ANYTHING? I usually read this thread open mouthed at the work you are doing to the old girl.
  14. Poor 432 ;-( but hopefully it will help protect the guys who have to use them for real.
  15. ;-( I hope the driver makes a speedy recovery.
  16. Here is a better picture of the Jordanian ferret. Alvis also came up with a reworked version with a Perkins Phaser diesel engine, Chrysler automatic transmission and an aluminium hull. ALVIS Ferret-Ferret80.pdf
  17. Here is a page that shows the ferret with the big gun... http://www.kaddb.com/static/project6.shtm
  18. I'll have to dig around my pictures to find the Jordanian ferret with the recoiless rifle. In the meantime, here are a couple of ones that have been rebuilt by Jordan. The one that doesn't look like a ferret is apparently called a Stallion.
  19. I'd have to agree with you here. Better to "revive a dead hulk" than let it rust or go to the great scrapyard in the sky. The Jordanians have modified their ferrets with diesel engines (I have a picture of one with a recoilless rifle on a mount stuck above the engine bay) and the Ferret 80 concept used a diesel with an automatic transmission If you join the ferret heaven group on yahoo, you can get some more info from there. btw. I often threaten my ferret with a diesel engine and auto transmission when I'm working on it (Not that'd I'd do it)
  20. Silly question coming up.... I was wondering if anyone has converted a ex mil landrover / Bedford to an automatic transmission. If so, is there any advice? (Apart from "Don't try it!") How difficult was it? This is more of a "I wonder" type of question Thanks Paul T
  21. Beautiful sight, even if it was an accident. ;-)
  22. Sad to hear she's in danger again I was a volunteer "deck ape", tour guide and shipkeeper on her when she was in Glasgow. She deserves better than to be scrapped
