  2. I know what you mean but I had the chance of a Norbar wrench only a year old with little use for £120 that will do the job.
  3. Many thanks all!:saluting: I have been thinking of getting a torque wrench after finding some not very tight nuts that I had put on a few weeks ago but wanted to make sure. I would rather shell out a bit for the right tool than have one of these wheels overtake me!! I am happy to go ahead go ahead and the wrench and it may come in handy for other stuff. At least I will have peace of mind, jumping on a 4ft bar was not the solution. Cheers Iain
  4. I suppose the correct name came about by the time the manual update was issued. I had this vision of a Milly with a digger on the back, very surreal.
  5. Thanks Mike, I had not seen that item before, very interesting. I have heard from an ex. REME guy that a number of vehicles were returned to AEC to have the load reactor fitted after experience in the field. So it was not planned before construction, I think! Also that they tended not to be used as it was the last thing to do after rigging the casualty and by that time no one could be bothered rigging the load reactor.
  6. Cheers Mike I was wondering if the "Back-Acter" was a planned item (not the load reactor) that did not make it, any ideas?
  7. On looking through the user handbook dated June 1970 for the AEC Mk3 recovery, section 5 is reserved for "Back-Acter". In another handbook dated Oct 1970 this section is for the "Load reactor". I believe that the load reactor was retrofited to some vehicles to try to avoid the wheelies when suspended towing and so was not planned from the start. So what was the "Back-Acter" all about? There are some unused brackets/mounts ect in the rear of the vehicle around the tow hook , could this have been something that was planned for but never actually made? A Milly with a back-Acter....now there is a picture!!!!:shocked:
  8. Hi Mike Yes but the parts book says 7/8 BSF ! I have just been and checked with a measuring stick and it is around 7/8 diam.:nut: Iain
  9. I remember some of the bs we were told, such as in the event of a "sunburst event" lay flat on your face in the direction of the detonation and the helmet was shaped to deflect the blast over your back! Yeah right! I can still feel (in my mind) that bloody spike.

I have looked through all the manuals I have ( I dont have the correct maint. manual) for the Milly Mk3 recovery and all it says for wheel nut tightening is the sequence but no mention of torque. I have looked up the charts for 7/8 BSF but I dont know the grade. I may just be usless at finding things but is there a recommended torque for this application? Many thanks in anticipation:tup::

  12. Pressure washing the roof of my storage container then a coating of liquid rubber.... far more interesting!!:banana: Might even play with the winch on my Milly.(definitely more interesting).

  17. Time had put doupt in my mind about the incident but I remember the buz at the time!! I also remember my first night at Bruggen looking in SROs to see a RAFP(dog handler) was being done for beastiality. Happy days. Iain
  18. I was not a "snowdrop" and so not an expert (of anything!) I was a "nav.insty" but I do seem to remember RAFP would wear an armband to make themselves stand out when in NBC atire, when masked up it would be a hard lid same as everyone else. In a full goon suit it was just about impossible to tel who people were so a label on the chest with rank and name was required. I remember the story of an armed robbery in the local post office at Wildenrath by a guy in full nbc and mask using a SMG. He forgot about his label!!! (This was back in the early eighties.) I hope this is of some use!
  19. Hi Andy I would recommend a dual pole cut out that will isolate both pos and neg sides of the batts. These are fairly standard for Military trucks etc. If you are using a single pole isolator then go for the pos (24v). But you then have to remember to switch it off!!! Cheers Iain

  22. I think I am right in that they are classed as section 5 ie prohibited as they are multi barrel! Special branch inspected a Chieftain I was importing from Belgium once to make sure the main gun was deactivated but ignored the smoke dischargers, so If anyone is after a pair for a Chieftain:whistle:

I remember trials on some machines in the early eighties in Norway by british army/marines during Hardfall etc. Not sure what units had them but I am fairly sure of Ski-doo and Polaris examples, they were big, fast and some had trailers. I have this image of a squadie passing our site at a rate of knots crossing a clear area with his SMG flailing in the wind behind him and him hanging on for dear life but with a huge grin! all we had at the time were two BV202E......:nut:
  24. Hi Andy I agree, but batteries are expensive and so is the carriage for about 80kgs. I have tried used Hawker power batts and they are good but I have had one or two duffers which is the risk you take by buying any surplus parts. Having put up with flat batts and poor starting, long term storage and intermittent usage etc. I feel that, for me, its worth it, and the price is less than half the closest I could find. To look after them I am going to use an Optimate 6, it should do the trick according to the blurb, but time will tell! :drive: Cheers Iain
