  1. It failed its MOT ! :-( The headlights are LHD and the windscreen washer tube fell off..... All in all, not too bad at all, should have spotted the headlights though. :red: Iain
  2. Thanks Tyler ! I had thought around £6500, more would be better of course but its only worth what someone will pay... Just one or two items to finish it off as I would like; Air ducting/hose to replace the worn two piece hose from the snorkel to the filter. Rear seat cushions. My main problem just now is trying to get temp insurance on a vin number for the MOT, so far I keep getting refusals. happy days cheers Iain
  3. After saying I was not going to get carried away, I have re-built the Landy.. It has been a chassis up rebuild and is almost complete, MOT this Monday then I have to decide if it is worth registering or just put it up for sale? I just object to paying for road tax that cannot be transferred. Anyway, a couple of pics of the process, just the Barracuda to go on and hopefully success at the MOT. I am not sure how much I should be asking either, the time spent and it's a lot, cannot be reimbursed but it in pretty good nick now. Loads of new parts used etc and comes complete with a bullet in the passenger door and bullet strike on the near side billsen screen. err, can someone help by putting the pics the right way up ? Not sure what happened... cheers Iain.
  4. With the right size board this should work with terminated sections from a kit ! The Frost tool would be good for lengths cut from a coil. Its worth trying the board method before buying a tool, I'll give this a try today. Many thanks Iain
  5. Thanks for that ! Does anyone have experience of these, what would you recommend ? I think the Laser one would be nice but a bit too expensive for occasional use. Iain
  6. Hi all I have changed brake lines many times with copper and copper nickel tubing including kits. But it never looks just right, the tube always comes coiled and no matter how I try I cannot get the "factory" straight look. Are there any tools or tricks to get the tubing perfectly straight before fitting ? Bends are no problem with a bending tool but to get it straight first........ I am about to change out the brake and fuel lines on my LR Snatch and will be selling it on, so want to get it right. cheers Iain
  7. Hi Gary I am sure Sammy would do it all for you, its what he does, and he does it well ! I am sure you know well, but I would advise that whoever carries out any overhaul that you are in total agreement before it starts what exactly is required. And at what cost! All to often the result may be too good at too high a cost or not good enough, all down to misunderstandings. All the best Iain
  8. Hi Try Sammy at A+S ! http://www.arm-soft.com/ Good luck with it ! Cheers Iain
  9. All part of their charm.... You could warm it by running the GUE for a while, it won't warm right up until driven for a bit. Have fun !
  10. The starter on my EB has snapped at the flywheel end of the shaft and needs replacing. I have the spacer/adaptor but wonder if this is a known fault and if there are any hints or tips with these ? It would be right in the shed door and just when I need it. :argh: Many thanks Iain
  11. I have just renewed my tax on the Militant at the local post office for the next year and it was the easiest and quickest yet. The gentleman did not want to see any documents or a form (I did not have the reminder with me) and just looked at the registration document and issued from that. Apparently they have been told not to inspect documents, just to issue the tax disc. He did say they do not yet have access to mot or insurance databases but will in the future. I suppose with ANPR and the so called RAC Traffic Alert sensors there is no need to filter the applications as you are getting checked anyway, but it makes the process of renewal nice and simple. :-) Iain
  12. Thank you ! I am not sure how well they were stored and recently they lost their storage crates. They have plates with the engineering company name but I am in the Gulf of Mexico just now and cant remember the name. I do know having looked them up on the interweb that they are now part of CAT, overhauling engines etc.Other than finding out the status of these engines this is a strangely interesting subject, especially when experts like yourself and Richard talk about it !Thanks againIain
  13. Yes it's a Mk3 wrecker and the original AV760 has been modified with TL12 heads etc. Runs very nicely but there is no l/h engine side panel and the turbo sits where the passenger seat should be. :shake: I am sure it is known to some on here. Iain
  14. Yeh, rubb it in about the weather I'm already jealous of the Landy... Stunning motor mate !
  15. Many thanks Richard  To start with I think I will first take off the sump plugs and see what comes out ! The air intakes were taped over but I think I'll take the covers off until I get to the rockers in case water is trapped in there. Then pull the injectors , see if I can get a shufti scope and see the bores. Put some light machine oil in the bores and try and turn the crank by hand (Girt long lever on a socket !) One engine is on a storage frame so I may look at running them, or is that not wise ? What about the injector pump etc ? For long term storage maybe a nice warm dry shed ( Just as well I dont have patio doors....... yet)! :-D Iain
  16. Hi I have aquired some ex mod AV760 engines that were overhauled and stored many moons ago. They are not in their boxes anymore and I have no way of being sure of their condition. I wish check them out as fully as possible and most likely use one to replace the engine in my Milly as it is modified with a turbo. They will have been inhibited etc how do I check them out ? Also I will be storing them again and would like to keep them long term, how to I prep them including the fuel injection systems etc ? Many thanks !
  17. Thanks guys. I will have to find the data plate but I think it is rated around 15t Gross, so I need to get a new air tank etc and get it all sorted. Both the Milly and trailer are post 1960, so not looking at any exemption for age. Meanwhile I may as we'll get the Milly Inspected, it should be up to standard anyway, and then get the trailer inspected as well. At least then if it all goes horribly wrong, my insurance company (who will be informed) won't walk away. I intend to put the trailer to use, private none profit etc only, although not of military origin should look OK until I get a 10t light recovery trailer! Iain
  18. Help ! I have been refurbishing a trailer to tow behind my Militant, I found it on EBay while looking for a Rubery Owen/ Brockhouse 10t light recovery trailer (still looking). It is well on it's way just needs side marker lights fitting and a replacement air tank with fitting for a RE-6 relay valve. My main question is does it need testing, it is for private use only ? I did have all the ratings for it but don't have this info to hand anymore, I suppose this would also have to be determined ?:undecided: Many thanks ! Iain
  19. There were also some naval volunteers that came onboard some days before, my father was one of them. In effect surely the whole operation at Narvik was a decoy for the evacuation. Iain
  20. Thank you, facinating stuff, and it all adds to the picture. Of course these men were in the main in their teens and twenties and were only human with all their faults etc but they were ordinary folk enduring the extraordinary. Makes you think! He mentioned the work gangs on a few occasions, including one of the guards who was a bit of a "private Schults" character that they teased a lot including hiding his rifle. They gave him it back before he was found out as he would have ended up on the Russian front. He did not hate the German people but most certainly had bitter feelings for some. He visited while I was based there and his spoken German came back a bit, including swearing. My mother has some pictures and a red cross map of POW camps with some marked off, if I can get hold of them I'll get them copied and uploaded but it might be a few months. The HMS Vandyck looks to be a big ship to be used as a "boarding vessel" with what was a small crew and with some grand rooms etc. No doubt not so grand when in RN service, except maybe the officers quarters. Iain
  21. They must have been toghether, at least in the begining ! He was forever gratefull for the kindness shown by the locals in the Lofoton islands. Another place he mentioned was Eisenach (I think) which was strong is his memory. I just remember fragments from his reminiscing, such as working on road gangs and doing some work on a chemical plant as he was a chemical plumber etc. And some positive and not so positive memories of his fellow prisoners (Especially the officers) best not repeated. He also mentioned being in the same camp as Douglas Badder at one time (?), said he was not so popular with other prisoners as he kept dropping them all in the cr@p each time be tried to escape. Iain
  22. Thanks for that ! My father and one of his brothers were on a larger RN ship when they asked for volunteers, they both remembered his brother belting him when he volunteered to go to the Vandyck. In their memory it was to be used as a decoy, maybe a bitter memory, but then would the RN admit this ? He remembered a Stuka bombing them ! My father would not talk much of his experiences until later years and he mentioned having to get away from the advancing Soviets, he was in eastern Poland. I looked up "Forces war Record" and he is noted as a POW at Stalag 344 Lamsdorf but I know that over the years he had been at a few camps including one adjacent to Auchwitz where they could see what was going on. I have a tankard marked "Stalag V11 Kreigsweihnacht 1940" and my mother has a pic of him on a stage with a clarenet with some other guys playing Jaz at one of the camps. It would be nice to be able to piece toghether those 5 years but so far not much joy. Iain
  23. Well, it was about 10 years ago and they were all tucked up in shed with lots of other stuff.Might still be some in shed !Iain
