1. Thanks Adrian, another mystery solved.........
2. Note the allied star is not quite lined up. I don't think that my Dad who is at the wheel would be too concerned. Those of you who are familiar with American vehicle used by the RASC; What is the wagon ?
3. This a Conqueror that was photographed in 1969/70 by L/Cpl Dave Parkinson,14/20 Hussars. It is (or was) at Perham Down
4. My Vulcan is Chassis No16 and MP8874, so its not one of those. I must crack on with it but that chap who is into Lunacy keeps stopping me with the cup that cheers but does not inebriate...........
5. While we are on with the subject of Army lorries of the 1920's, would anyone have any photos of details of the Vulcan, 30 cwt, six wheeler that was supplied to the War office in 1928 ? I have this rare vehicle, I am improving it at the moment as some of the previous restoration was not too good.
6. One dark night donkeys years ago.......err 1976? somewhere, cannot remember, I was settling down for the short night
under the front, adjacent to the axle, of a Bedford RL. I thought that I would make a brew of tea on the Hexamine burner.
In those days I took sugar in my tea, it was pitch black apart from the flame under the mess tin and so it came to pass in the cramped conditions that the white substance that I thought was sugar was in fact part of a Hexy block.
My tea ruined and curses into the night............Try it if you have a Hexy block, just for the fun!
7. I am doing some improving, not restoration, to a Vulcan six wheeler. In the buff log book the colour is described as Service Green. Can anyone throw any light on what this colour is ? Being a late 1920's vehicle could it be one of the bronze's or is it too early for these ?
8. I still think I am 32.......... Probably the reason I don't stick photos on the furum is because there is always some-one or clever Dick who has to make a comment about what I have or not done...... Mr Barrell !
9. Richard Thank you, I do not have a control box, only the information from the Hand Book. However the engine is not the original (rebuilt 1952) and so the dynamo may also not be the correct one.......? All I want is for electricity to be produced to recharge the battery, surley not too much to ask. I would like to make contact with your chap please. Cheers Bob
10. Richard I need one of these voltage control boxes for my 1939 Morris Commercial CDF. My dynamo is CAV Type DBNB 122 and the corect control box should be a CAV Type 75/119X. Would you have one or point me to where I may obtain one ? Thanks Bob
11. No, not near Bude. However yet again, due to the odd people that populate this planet, the job was off......
12. Steve Have you any documentary evidence to substantiate that railings etc were dumped in the sea ? On another Furum this topic emerged and nothing could be proven........ Bob
13. I wonder what would have happened to him if this took place on a train in this country. Three dead; he would have been arested and charged with murder no doubt. Direct action has its merits..........
14. Maybe 15 years ago I was told by a chap, who I will not name, that there was a buried tank somewhere at Woodcock Hill Industrial Estate. The tank was apparently pushed over a edge into some clay diggings. Google earthing the location WD3 1PQ does not show a area that this could be it. The tank was a Cromwell or Comet Anyone know more ?
15. Mr Runflat Could you have a further think about your recollection and comments regarding where this lot ended up..............for I am the new owner of the 'gorgeous' Vulcan. Thanks Bob
16. Now if I could only recognise the back of my head........... Yes you could que up and get a wad of cotton wool for your ears, aim and fire a live round from a 25pr at some derilict aircraft. Cerificates for this were given, I remember the massive stack of ammo that just had to be expended. Some things you never forget.
17. Twas I that painted those handles red. I did this beacause many of the 70 to 80 Ferrets that I have had, most comimg direct from Ludgershall, had handles painted thus. With reference to 'a nice bright colour under camouflage a no no' why was it that the fire extinguisher rubber cover on the side of a 432 was painted red ? A 6" square no less and call signs in white and yellow. BTW the enemy would have to be pretty close to see a tiny bit of red on a vehicle.....
18. Crusader 80 5/8 Kings Regiment, we spent nearly all the time in Noddy suits and blokes sleeping, which is quite normal on exercise.
19. Bit by bit Alister thats the way to do it, the first ten years of a project are the worst. You will be OK in the 2020's Bob
20. Most of the turrets were bolted onto Foxs and disposed by the Disposal Sales Agency in the mid 1990's However I know where four turrets are on pallets. Please PM if of interest.
21. This was the Loyd that acted as a guide/referance for our restoration, it was in running driving condition. I will try and find some photos of it. Bob
22. Cheiftain, Ex 4RTR, ready for moving to its demise,2003/4
23. The more old I get the more I think that this country of ours is stupid.... Have we no sense ?
