  1. I think the truck is about 11ft tall with this box and the height above the road when on the trailer was about 13' 6". There were no bridges on my route back so the height didn't matter.
  2. Do what I did and transport it yourself. It does help if your day job is a class one driver though...:cool2::coffee:
  3. How can it be SORN if it's in France? Is it still UK registered? The only way I can think of is, A) Low Loader B) Trade Plates
  4. That's interesting. Do you know what these gearboxes are like and do any come up for sale that you know of? Would the Military transfer box "hold back" the performance of the turner?
  5. I would have thought you should be OK. As mentioned, rims are supposed to take a small variety of tyre sizes with the same diameter rim. LW Vass have the MOD tyre contract and can supply brand new tyres. Bare in mind the bar grips are crossply and the new Good Years are Radial.
  6. This is a question I've been thinking of. A guy I spoke to at Trucks and Troops with an RL said he had a Turner 5 speed gearbox fitted to his truck and he reckons it did 50mph comfortably. I know Turner do LR boxes but didn't know they did Bedford's. What 5 speed gearbox would be a straight fit onto the Bedford. If I could get 60mph I'd be more than happy, even 56mph. Beats having every artic overtaking you all the time and would actually be safer.
  7. Yes, but the load has to be "evenly distributed". The only part of that "load" in front of the rear axle is the cab of the transit, and that's not going to put much weight through the front wheels with the car sagging the rear end.. The whole weight of the car is after the rear axle of the Cargo, and most of the transit is also past the axle. Overweight is the issue - axle weight. It's also an unstable load, and is also well over the allowed load overhang.
  8. Talk about over loading a 7.5ton Cargo. How did he manage to get on the ferry without being pulled. I see his number plate is visable. Will have to email this to my mate who is in the Met, nothing like photographic evidence.
  9. I've got a 1986 N/A 2.5 diesel in my Defender. It's done 230,000kms and has been 100% reliable. They are slow as hell but are a good engine. The same engine fitted with the turbo did cause problems, and i wouldn't want one in mine. The 200TDI engine is better in my opinion than the 300TDI which suffered early problems (with the timing belt I believe)
  10. From looking at the rules you will need a permanent export licence to sell it in a non EU country. It doesn't matter what colour you paint it or what you do to it, as it was owned by the MOD it's classified as an ex Military vehicle. You will need an HGV unless it's converted to a "Motor Caravan" or down rated. If you passed your test in 2004 I don't think you will have the 7.5 ton entitlement, so down rating will not change anything if you don't have the entitlement. The Motor Caravan route is a very grey area. Some say you need an HGV if over 7.5ton and others say you don't. You will need to get this clarified. The best place to buy a "cheap" one would be David Crouch. He sells them cheaper than Withams. If you want a really good one then you will have to part with some hard earned at Withams purely because they have the best choice available purely due to the numbers they have, but they are more expensive than other dealers.
  11. The 200TDI engines are superb. More or less bomb proof and they are good on juice too, I'd say about 30-32mpg.
  12. Ah, good old squaddie humour and rivalry. It's the type of humour that would have the PC Police hauling you before a Judge. Rivalry is the same, you always get the banter from someone from another Regiment. Many a time I've been in the Alex in the Shot which was an RLC pub, and it's been invaded by hoards of Para's doing their best to start a fight. But on the Battlefield you can bet your wife they would be the first to back you up if trouble kicked off.
  13. Looks like she has had her arm up a cows backside, LOL...:-D Happy Birthday.
  14. I live not far from the Ridgeway. That was one hell of a green lane monster that went for dozens of miles. Sadly they have now closed it and since then all the other lanes in the area have been Restricted to stop the Ridgeway traffic using them instead. It never ceases to amaze me how these councils operate, it's like a war against people enjoying their 4x4's. They moan that they are never used off road and when you do they ban the activity. I think most of it is down to the "Ramblers" brigade who are all ex judges, Dr's and the like. When I was in the East Northants Land Rover Owners Club we used to go out at weekends and repair the lanes in our own time for free. The council supplied the materials and we supplied the labour. Unfortunately people seem to go out in the winter months when the lanes are flooded and wet and totally decimate them with wheel ruts instead of letting them recover over winter and driving them when dry to avoid rutting them up so bad. The council steps in and bans their use. The actions of a minority spoil it for everyone else as always.:nono:
  15. For me I think the M60. The sound these tanks make gives you goose bumps.
  16. Dodge 6x6 in a petrol station in Hook Hants....Anyone on here? Driver was wearing what looked like a binmans outfit.
  17. Yes, was a nice relaxing weekend. It was nice to meet some forum members. Sorry to Radiomike for having to rush off, you caught us heading up to my parents house in Stony Stratford. It would have been nice to see more people there as it looks like a lot of effort went into the show. I was glad to have a field to drive round in as my truck has a brand new transfer box (ABRO fitted it 2 months before the Army cast the truck) and the low range finally got some use. Will definitely be going to the next one.
  18. Look at the rondabout and go up the A508. Take 1st right into Northampton Rd and then right again into Cosgrove rd. This road used to run to Old Stratford until they built the duel carriageway. It's down there. By the way the same road but on the other side of the duel carriageway has a farm machinery dealer called Ace plant. They do really good deals on engine and gearbox oil in 5 gallon drums.
  19. So how many forum members are attending this show??
  20. I am reading a brilliant book from a WW2 U Boat commander. It's a biography of his war time service. It's called IRON COFFINS and it's by Herbert A Werner. His boat amongst others was U-557. I've also bought another book, again a biography, called PANZER LEADER by General Heinz Guderian.
  21. I remember a Martian parked at Stacey Bushes at a recovery firm. It's not the same one is it???
  22. I was looking at getting an LED type beacon. They are expensive but draw low current and are very bright and you can alter their flashing pattern.:-\
  23. I have the complete set up but it's still in the box so I don't know whether the box beeps or not. It has two switches, fuse and a light on it, but it's in the Bedford and can't remember what it looks like exactly. The plan is to test it first to see if it works OK. If it does I will use a magnetic beacon on the rear cross member by the rear pintle hook and it it with two connectors. Rig up the box in the cab (comes with velcro strips) and run the wiring along the chassis to the rear. Then all I have to do is plug the light in and switch on. Then when at a show disconnect the beacon and hide away...
