  1. Thanks Stone. Got yourself a tank yet? You have to use the licence now you know!!:cool2:
  2. Thanks guys, I actually loaded this onto Google Earth this morning:coffee: The one I'm on about isn't listed, so that's a bonus. There do indeed seem to be quite a few in Oxfordshire, mainly due to the airfields no doubt.
  3. Very nice job there Rambo. When I saw Gordon Beals Goddess in Sand I thought he had sprayed it as the paint job was excellent, but he told me he did it with a roller, I was very impressed. The stuff you use, is it the same as the old army Polyeurothane Enamel? I've still got some genuine Beckers Polyeurothane Enamel Matt IRR green and black left. I'm going to re spray mine next year and I was thinking of doing it plain green this time with black bumpers/grill/wheel arches, just like yours. Either that or in Desert colour, as my Defender was in the first Gulf War in Saudi.
  4. Dave, If you join the EMLRA you can get your history straight off the Merlin system. My mate Mark Cook deals with this. I know it's a pain if you haven't got a Landy, but if you want the info then it's only £17.50 to join. Like I said, the truck was cast May and the box in June (the same week I bought it) and I got the history for both. I didn't really need it as I've got the vehicle docs for both the truck and box body telling me all I need to know, we did it just to see what came up. It tells you all about the vehicle and the all important unit history. Give it a try.:cool2:
  5. Hello mate, If you go onto my picture album bit you can see the body in question. There is also a picture of the socket here; http://www.hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?t=13512&page=2 Cheers mate
  6. A good steam cleaner will heat up the underseal without the risk of fire.
  7. I was looking at a site the other day about Pillboxes, and it said that there weren't any listed for Oxfordshire. I haven't got a clue what type this one is, it's square, concrete, has three gun slits and a doorway. It's half burried and has earth on top. It's about a foot thick and the sign says something like No3 Police something or other. I found this on the net, dated 1939 it's the Byelaws for the Central Ordinance Depot. It has a map of the outline of the site. If you look at the top where the right of way goes from B-C the Pillbox is around where the "way" is written on the map. It's the only one I've seen and is accessible to the public. As mentioned I will get some pictures asap. http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/4FE3AC96-9D79-4F54-95DC-38144A356CF7/0/didcot_central_ordnance_depot.pdf
  8. If your vehicle has only recently been cast they may not yet have any info on it as it is not passed to them until five years after demob ( I found this out as this was the case with my Unimog ) . Sorry mate, but that must be wrong. My Bedford was cast this year, and the body on it was cast the same week I bought it. My mate Mark Cook got the history on both these a week after I bought it, straight off Merlin.
  9. Join the ex military Land Rover Assosiation. My mate Mark Cook deals with the history side of things. It doesn't have to be a Land Rover, he can get any vehicles history. Membership is £17.50 and I think you then get a history search for free, not sure about this though.
  10. What a load of old tosh. The bulk price is cheaper now than it was before the last massive rises where fuel was in the 90 odd pence per litre. They claim it takes a few months to drop the price when it comes down, but when it rises sharply on the wholesale market the prices rise daily. It should be below 1.00ppl but we will never see that again, and all the while the Government is robbing us blind with the so called "save the plannet from carbon emissions" green tax on fuel, using this excuse just to tax us off the road. The price here for diesel is 1.11.9 ppl. They must think people are rich here because it's always about 3 pence dearer here than anywhere else.
  11. I was looking at a Pillbox that I presume was for the protection of the Didcot Ordinance Depot, before the Power Station was built. It has a painted sign on one side just visible. I will take some photo's of this soon.
  12. I went to a wine place in Corsham a while back. They store their wine in a 5 MILE long underground weapons bunker. It has a massive transit van sized winch that lowers rail cars down a 45 deg tunnel to a depth of 200ft and then it levels out and goes on for 5 miles with side rooms all the way down. It was VERY impressive seeing it. It's part of the Corsham Nuclear bunker complex. I would love to buy this bunker. You could use it for secure MV storage!!!:-D If I had the money I would love to buy something like that, very interesting. Maybe the members of this forum can all club together to buy it? Then we would all be part owners of a nuclear bunker.
  13. My point of view on this is that the parents of the kids riding these quads/motorbikes know all to well the conditions of entry onto the site. It's written for all to see on the conditions of entry form that everyone signs. If they get nicked by the Police they have only got themselves to blame. You wouldn't let your 10 year old kid ride down the road on a quad bike with no helmet, so why let them do it at W&P? Don't get me wrong I'm not against the kids riding these bikes, I used to do it myself when I was younger. The trouble is they do it at W&P when there is heavy vehicle traffic, tanks etc as well as members of the public on foot. I think if there is an unused field at W&P then this could be put aside for the kids to ride on. I saw kids at W&P that were far to young to be riding the size of bikes that they were on. As Rambo1969 said. Imagine the horror of a kid loosing control of a bike and crashing into your vehicle or worse your family members. Imagine the problems trying to claim off the insurance, hit by an underage uninsured driver?
  14. Is Marcus Glenns paint Polyeurothanne enamel or water based?
  15. After doing mine here is my thoughts. I used an air driven orbital sander and spent 3 days sanding it down, but there wasn't as many layers of paint on mine as yours. Don't use paint stripper as you will need to use an etch primer to cover the aluminuim (although I did sand mine down to the metal where there was oxidization). Sand it down so you have a smooth surface all over. Then spray it all over with red oxide primer. Then two coats of NATO green (I used genuine NATO green/black Beckers polyeurothane enamel) paint. I'm not sure if you can get this type of paint anynore (poxy EU regulations again). It doesn't thin out with thinners but with Kerosene. Then if you want some black cammo on it, just blow that over in the pattern you want. Mask up the side lights/headlights/windscreen/tyres etc,etc and the black rubber of the aeriel mounts. Leave the door mirrors black (yours is fitted with Defender mirrors, get some series 3 mirrors if you want it genuine) You can paint the bumper and rear cross member black if painting it all green or you can paint them green or green/black it doesn't matter with these. Paint the wheel rims green only. The union flag stickers need to be on the right as you are looking at the vehicle, so on the front place one sticker above the N/S headlight then on the offside you can place a roundal (if RAF) or the army Sqn/Corps unit ident sticker, again, above the headlight. Same goes for the back, union flag on the right as your looking at it. The petrol cap should be painted red, as should the towing shackles on the front bumper. Don't paint the wheel studs white, this practice stopped years ago. The rear diff casing should be painted white, then paint the drain/fill plugs on diffs/gearbox/transfer box/swivel housing etc Yellow. TP stencils can be green/black/white. Of course you can do it any way you wish, this is just the colours and items we painted at my Squadron. I'm going to re do mine next year, but am going to make a better job of it than I did before (was a bit of a rush job). Good luck with it, hope this helps.
  16. That's fantastic, trust the good old Land Rover to come to the rescue. The beauty with that is you will be able to get a replacement off the shelf at any Landy dealer. I take it your electrics are 12v then?
  17. You could go for an artillery tractor, as they usually have room for the gun crew, then tow a trailer or living van. Would an RB44 work? You would be able to fit out the back with front facing seats.
  18. Not sure, but it's pretty close to the W&P show. I'd go to this event if it's a two dayer. Why a 40's evening? These seem to be the norm.
  19. Well done for making the effort in trying to change an unacceptable situation. Personally speaking I don't hold out much hope for next year. I suppose time will tell. It was a very brief letter considering, without much substance. If the toilet contractors were telling you that they were told to open the toilets on Monday, I'm sure that's the case. I can't see there being a case of "crossed wires" here, as they can only bid for the contract on the information given by the W&P team. I'm sure the W&P team were fully aware of this fact, hence the lack of action on their part getting them opened up. Apart from the fact that we had to put up with sub standard facilities ALL week (apart from the day they opened) it doesn't make much of an impression on the public seeing toilets overflowing with cr*p, not to mention serious risk of disease. I'm glad you brought up the "quad bike" meanace too. It's not a problem if it's after the public go home, and the riders are qualified and the right age and are riding sensibly, but this never happens. I was watching kids no older than ten, riding on quad bikes in the middle of the day when it was heaving with members of the public. How the hell do they get away with it? The parents are just as much to blame if not more so. It only takes one kid to hit a member of the public and the show will be shut down. There should be more Police patroling the site while the public are in, and they should be using the full force of the law on these irresponsible individuals. It's even worse when the site is wet, with gangs of youths on bikes wheel spinning, skidding and sliding all over the place. There just seems a lack of drive to hammer home the message. Sooner or later somethings going to happen that will result in the show being cancelled or serious restrictions put in place. It's all been said a thousand times before and I'm sure it will be again.
  20. To be honest I'm not sure, I've never had to move them. I can take a closer look when I've got some time. Looking at this picture they may slide along the box section. I haven't got a clue what his rates are. I think he works on a dartboard type setup, where the country is in zones and he charges according to where you are etc.
  21. Mine has a roller type system at the front of the box, and I've heard it's got something to do with jacking the box up and down. Never saw these in the Army as they just use a Foden Wrecker to do all the lifting work. There must be some somewhere?
  22. Not looking at doing it to mine Robin. I was wondering why the Americans do it to their trucks and if anyone has done it to a Bedford. The exhaust on the Bedford is a real chunky affair. Lots of weight, size and power sapping silencer. I was wondering if there are power gains to be made putting a stack on with a smaller silencer? It would have a few benefits. The Bedfords when cold smoke like hell. As the exhaust is at the bottom of the truck the smoke really is a pain for following motorists, a stack up the back of the cab would put this into the air instead. Then you have the fact going up the back would make it a lot more of a simple system, just a flexible section then a straight bit of pipe. My truck is VERY quiet, more so than my Land Rover. I don't think the noise would be that much more without a silencer or with a more free flowing silencer fitted. The turbo is a low pressure one and you don't hear any whistle, not like the Reo turbo's. I was wondering if there would be increased power without the dustbin fitted. A custom made stainless system wouldn't be that much and sprayed green would last a lifetime.
  23. Has it got the Multifuel N/A engine in it or has it got the 330 turbo?
  24. Did any of the Bedford coaches use this engine?
  25. That's what I get out of my Defender, 25mpg. If it was a 200TDI I think you'd be looking at around 31mpg.
