  1. I keep all my fuel receipts, mainly for my daily driver. My Bedford does about 16mpg. I filled it up to the brim and drove it from Didcot to Beltring and back for the War and Peace show. As it was it's first trip out (only registered it 4 days earlier) I drove it very steady there and back. Trip down took 5hrs (lots of stops to check everything was OK, good job I did as I had a loose fuel injector pipe) and the trip back just over 3hrs and it cost me £50...:-D My mate has got an 07 Focus ST and that only does 17mpg, so not bad at all.
  2. I was looking at the exhaust on the Bedford MJ, well the dustbin of a silencer and wondered if anyone has seen a Bedford MJ in service (or out) with an exhaust stack behind the cab, rather than the standard underslung version. When you look at a Reo with a straight through exhaust, do you think this would make the engine perform better, or worse? Is it better to have back pressure on a diesel? I was wondering if a custom built silencer that allowed the air to flow more freely would free up some more power? What are your thoughts? ( by the way I've no intention of putting a stack on mine, just wondered why the americans went for the "no silencer" option on their trucks, is/was this for performance?)
  3. A few more pictures of my work truck picking up my play truck!!
  4. If I was able to rustle up enough work specialising in Military Vehicle and associated (parts etc) equipment transport then I would buy my own truck and set out on my own. But yes, it would take an OT-90 very nicely.
  5. How long would you say the job would take? I'm not looking at taking mine off, just interested in what's involved. Cheers
  6. Absolutely superb picture of the body being jacked up. I knew the slots in my body were for jacks, but I've never seen what they look like. I bet these are like rocking horse do-do. Anyone had any experience of using these and if they know if any were released?
  7. How hard a job is it to remove the MK/MJ cab? I've seen them complete ready to be fitted, so is it just a case of un plugging the electrics, undoing a few bolts and lift off? These things always seem easy until you try to do them outside your house.
  8. I was thinking of doing the same regarding the generator with mine. I was thinking of getting a box fabricated and bolting it behind the spare wheel carrier as there is loads of room since the cable drums were taken off. I could fit a drop down single piece door so the genny would just slide out. I had a look at some gennys in Machine Mart on Saturday. I'm going to need about 6,000 watts so I've got enough juice to power up the air con units with some spare to run the 240v sockets. The only trouble with these is the size of them. I see it is fitted with a raised air intake, do you know why this was done?
  9. Hello mate, As mentioned by AndyFowler, if you click on the link he put up then look on the right hand side of the page near the bottom it has "Vehicle Verification". Click on that and it tells you all about it. You don't need to be a member, but if your not the charge is £40. It's free to MVT members, so you might as well join the club (for £30 I think) and get it done for free. Glad to be of help.
  10. Has the RL been left outside for 12 years and subject to some robbing of parts? It looked in very good condition at the sale.
  11. You might need to contact someone like the MVT vehicle verification officer. It would need to be done from the chassis number.
  12. I once worked for a big company (name will remain nameless) and the Xmas card we received was a piece of A4 paper printed off with Merry Christmas on it, and folded in two:shocked:. I like getting the card from W&P, at least they can be bothered. The booking in form is what I'm after, I don't pay much attention to what period it is or what they have done to the photo.
  13. I thought I would post some pictures of mine on here to get the thread even more interesting. This batch are the day I arrived at Withams to pick the truck up. The Volvo is the truck I drive in my day job. It was originally a Ptarmigan communications truck. The truck was at Withams for a few months before I bought it. I got them to take the comms gear off and to replace it with the TC I bought. The box on the back is a Electronic Repair Radar Body. This actually arrived the same week I went to have a look for a truck and I bought it straight away. It's only been issued to one unit, 9 Army Air Corps REME Wksps. They never used it, and so I got my hands on an un used body.:yay:
  14. See here; http://www.transportsfriend.org/road/licence/group_2.html If you had an old class two or three licence before the rules changed you are able to drive a draw bar on your licence under restriction 102. If you passed your class two after the rules changed then you can't drive a draw bar and will need a class one to do so.
  15. Mine is up in the living room. Need to fill out the entry form for next year tho!!
  16. I owned a Series 3 from '94 right up to a few years ago (pictures on my album). It was parked up in a garage for 10 years, and wasn't started for about 5 of those. All I did was put some fresh fuel in, connected some slave leads and after 30 seconds she fired up. I used to drive from Colchester to Milton Keynes and back most weekends when I was posted in Colchester, and up to Beverley, Yorks (5hr each way) to see a girl I was with at the time. The only trouble I had was with the points once. They definitely need a lot more maintenance than the diesel, but in my opinion are much better. Modernish diesels are the best option, but the S3 knocker is like a dumper engine and slow as hell. The engine in mine was so quiet that you couldn't hear it running and it would wheelspin the back wheels in the wet if you weren't carefull. They are very thirsty. Mine had two tanks and would drink both on a colchester to MK return trip.
  17. Hi Richard, See here for exemptions and rules. http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/freight/road/workingtime/drivershoursgoods.pdf
  18. I would say the fly jib is a home built modification???
  19. Didn't know they were still going, I thought he dropped off the face of the earth?
  20. If I was you I'd contact the DVLA and tell them what's happened. They are supposed to take the form off you unless what they do is enter the fact you produced it onto the computer? If they haven't taken it then there is no record of you making the exemption??
  21. It's nice to see you have kept the British Army reg number and still have the Union Flag on it. I remember these at the Defence School of Transport at Leccy. They really shift in a straight line. I'd love one, but the price is dearer than a Chieftan MBT!! More practical though. The one at Withams now looks real nice.
  22. There is a DROPS in the tender at Withams. The picture is on the tender list.
  23. You DEFINITELY (V112G) need to submit this along with your application. If you don't then they should be asking you for an MOT certificate. You put a X in the box on the front and hand in a completed V112G with the application, together with your insurance, then job done. The "new" form is not a problem. It asks the owner to state under which exemption you are claiming. For example, if you are claiming under section 30 of schedule 2 then you are claiming as follows; Motor vehicles first used before 1st January 1960, used unladen and not drawing a laden trailer, and trailers manufactured before 1st January 1960 and used unladen. For the purposes of this paragraph any determination as to when a motor vehicle is first used shall be made as provided in regulation 3(3) of the Construction and Use Regulations. As you have claimed exemption under section 30 of schedule 2 you are stating that you are driving a vehicle that was "USED" before Jan 1960 and that it is unladen and not drawing a laden trailer. This will be on their records. Then if you was to get stopped by the Police or VOSA on your way to a show (I'd be a lot more worried if VOSA stops you) driving a pre 1960's truck that you have declared exempt and you have a load of stuff in the back that you were going to sell (say War and Peace) and also towing a trailer with another vehicle on, then be prepared to see the crap hit the fan. These items will be described as "goods" and it would certainly breach the definition "unladen"
  24. I think you will find your friend is incorrect. A truck that is used in a professional capacity will need to be tested once a year. You will also, as a driver, be subject to the drivers hours, WTD, tachograph and HGV licence rules. Once the truck is no longer used in a professional capacity it will need to be re-registered as a Private Heavy Goods Vehicle, so that it can't be used for commercial gain. Providing it meets one of the exemptions on the V112G you would be free to declare it MOT exempt. It is down to the driver of the vehicle to decide if it meets the exemption.
  25. Have you seen the price on this one at Withams??? http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/home/27565/Haglunds.htm
