    Punctures

Mark, Just be thankful you didn't end up with 2 puncutres in the same day. I had one on the way down to Kemble in the Ferret, and a second one when parked up. Luckily ATS in Cirencester stock tractor inner tubes so we managed to fix them both! Chris

    Amplifiers

Mark, I wired my ipod into the Clansman amplifier/speakers in my Spartan. I just took some old headphones, cut the plug off and connected the wires to the line in terminals. It works fine, but the sound quality isn't great! You should be able to do what you want, just try connecting it up and see what happens. :-) Chris
  4. I think it is right that those bringing tracked vehicles get a bit of help when attending W&P. If it weren't for the Cadmans low loader most of the tracked AFVs would never make it. The tracked vehicles are what make W&P special, they are almost all in the arena at least once a day, drinking away vast quantities of fuel for the public enjoyment. This is what the public pay to go and see, this is what they can't see anywhere else. Most vehicles which attend the show are parked up from start to finish, how many of the hundreds of Jeeps or Land Rovers do you see in the arena? I have used the Cadmans low loader to bring some CVRTs from Nottingham to Beltring for the last 2 years, we pay towards fuel, but it is nothing compared to the £2000+ quote I had from a commercial company. Just because we own the vehicles doesn't mean we can afford the transport, and the same is true of most people with tracked armour. Chris

    dvla - joy!

Yes, contact the Vehicle Verification Officer. He will be able to provide a document which the DVLA will accept as evidence. For those registering modern vehicles it is much easier, you just need the Cast Vehicle Form (blue piece of paper from the MoD) which you get when you buy a vehicle. Chris
  7. Lee, Yes provisionally, but I don't know which vehicles we will take yet, so we might not need very much or we might need loads. After Christmas I'll investigate transport, hopefully we'll get 2 or more CVRTs and the Fox there next year. Chris
  8. I will be there, as usual, don't know what we'll take yet though! Chris
  9. I used metal ready on all the suspension components of my ferret, then sprayed them with red oxide followed by green paint. It has been 5 years and they are not the slightest bit rusty. Chris
  10. He wants a Mk 1 Ferret, he just doesn't know it yet!
  11. Frosts do a fuel tank cleaning/sealing kit, that would probably do it for you. http://www.frost.co.uk/productList.asp?catID=25&frostCat=Fuel%20Tank%20Repair I highly recommend marine clean, once you've tried it you'll never use anything else. Chris
  12. I want one of those, preferably an Austin, but they hardly ever turn up and seem to be expensive when they do! Chris
  13. Jerry, Was that the one on ebay? Chris
  14. Joris, We towed my Sabre with another Sabre, using an A frame. Chris [attachment deleted by admin]
  15. I have started on the Sabre today. We dragged it out of its hole and took the lid off to find a few deep rusty puddles. We drilled some holes to let the water out, next job is getting it all clean and ready for an engine. Chris [attachment deleted by admin]
  16. Challenger 1's cost just over a million each when ordered in 1979. He won't sell it, he'll just end up paying loads of listing fees! Chris
  17. £10,000 for a Chieftain with large holes in it? I'd say it was worth the price of one tonne of scrap multiplied by 56. Chris
  18. Like Matt I am young, at only 24, and bought my Ferret when I was 18. I know quite a few young people who own vehicles. I am lucky in that I share the hobby with my Dad so we can afford to take on new projects and get to some shows. I think money and insurance are keeping more young people from owning vehicles. This year when we renewed the insurance we asked for quotes from several places, the only people who would insure me (being under 25) were the current company, and they would only do it because they had already insured me for a few years. If I had been refused insurance I'm not sure what I would have done! Chris
  19. My latest project (starting this weekend) is this Sabre. It needs an engine, dampers, periscopes and replica weapons. I am planning to strip it down and get everything blasted and painted up. I am also going to fit brand new wheels and track so it should look like a new one when I'm finished! I'll post more photos in here as I progress. Chris [attachment deleted by admin]
  20. As soon as money becomes an issue there are always problems. I don't know why clubs should have so much money anyway. Look at the problems money has had with clubs and shows in this country already! Chris
  21. I have had a Ferret for over 5 years now. I have driven it the 200+ miles to Beltring twice, with no problems. I totally rebuilt mine when I got it since it was a wreck. They are quite thirsty but about as economical as you can get with an AFV. I've had mine at over 60 on the motorway but mine is a mk 1 and that was just after putting in new points. They are easy to work on, easy to drive, easy to store and most of all fun. They do need a fair bit of maintenance, I check all the oil levels and give it a grease up before any long journeys and at least once a year if I haven't gone any long distances. If you go to look at one my biggest tip is to check all the grease nipples. If they look as if they haven't been used for a while you can probably say that it hasn't had any other maintenance done on it either. Worst case is if they are painted over! I personally don't like Mk 2s, and since I have a new style licence I couldn't drive one anyway. You'll need to spend about £5000 on a nice one. You might want to join Ferret Heaven http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ferret-heaven/ Chris
  22. There's a reason Land Rovers are so popular, and that's because most people can't afford a Jeep! Chris
  23. I thought they just corroded! But then what do I know, I'm just a materials engineer..... Chris ---------------------- Galvanic corrosion occurs when a galvanic cell is formed between two dissimilar metals. The resulting electrochemical potential then leads to formation of an electric current that leads to electrolytic dissolving of the less noble material. This effect can be prevented by electrical insulation of the materials, eg. by using rubber or plastic sleeves or washers, keeping the parts dry so there is no electrolyte to form the cell, or keeping the size of the less-noble material significantly larger than the more noble ones (eg. stainless-steel bolts in an aluminum block won't cause corrosion, but aluminum rivets on stainless steel sheet would rapidly corrode.
  24. A Humber Pig Mk 1/2? Kind of half way between?
  25. Neil, It is an infra-red detector set. There are 3 detectors in the stalk, which is connected to a control panel and a buzzer. You can switch the sensors on and off to determine which direction the IR beam is coming from. Chris
