question Identification Sought, odd British Steel Basket

This basket is made to a high standard with a woven style mesh and angle iron, there are a few minor bumps n the bottom that could be lugs or some sort.

 

Does anyone recognise it or perhaps it was a local workshops made item rather than issue, oh the possibilities.

Could it be up side down and used to protect such items as lights

Good suggestion but the door behind gives you a sense of scale, it is nearly two feet square.

 

It came to us along with some parts and a vehicle.

Unlikely that steel baskets would be put around airfield lights; any infrastructure on the active part of an airfield would normally be frangible (designed to fragment) to prevent damage to an aircraft in case of a collision.

A couple of those boxes each side and on the back mudguards of a medium sized MV might hold a rolled up cam net in each. Or are they big enough to hold a couple of jerry cans or the black plastic water versions?
