Smithy
Just a few pictures that I managed to take from the ferry out of Portsmouth on the way to Normandy last Thursday morning.
Mark
Nice.......and they say we have no Royal Navy :cool2:
Lord Burley
A lot of them are waiting to be scrapped. The invincible has been mothballed. But apparently it has had so much stripped internally that its highly unlikely it will ever return to sea again.
Lord Burley
This cost an astounding amount to commision. And i suspect is still having problems,as it doesnt seemed to have moved much since i was there in march.

From what I could see it looked like a couple of them had started to be cut up as there was plenty of scaffolding etc around them.

The one with the scaffolding and tarps around it is Ark Royal, its in dock for a re-fit. I have a stack of photos i took while there in march. Snapper
I think Invincible was to be converted to a hospital ship but they have stripped so many parts to keep the other two afloat that she cannot go anywhere. A friend of mine in the know says that reproducing the missing parts is nigh impossible...and the cost would be astronomical. I presume the Type 42s are doomed what a shame - they'll either end up in South America or at the end of a JCB. That looks like the new Type 45 there. Looks amazing. Makes you wonder if we'll ever see the new carriers, money being so tight. M
Tony B
Does seem a bit worrying that most of the Royal Navy can fit in one dock though.
REME 245
What ever the goverment currently claims, quite if the two new carriers will ever be built is highly questionable.
Tony B
:shake: What ever the goverment currently claims, quite if the two new carriers will ever be built is highly questionable. Aren't they still waiting for the quote from a Korean shipyard? :shake:
andrewroberts.1953
Come to Plymouth and have a trip up the Tamar. Lots of gray funnel line ships here, and lots of nuclear subs. And as it's FOST (flag officer sea training), lots of movements. Every Thursday FOST fight a war at sea with lots of aircraft. And RM have lots of landing ships and landing craft here.
