Here we are doing 75 mph!!!....not....more like 31mph sorry about sound quality:nut:Something went wrong... On you first tentative test run......Drive it like you stole it!!! keep the momentum!!!

And finally how to screw up the down change!!!! yes i know feel free to mock and take the piss:red: went for the clutchless shift missed it then went for the double de clutch and missed that too:nut: then had to wait for the bloody clutch to stop spinning with no clutch brake damn it. Still the transmission brake makes for an easy hill start:-DSomething went wrong...

I could drive Daisy now if you give me one good push and I attach a steering rope to the front axle ! :D

You must be well pleased with it especially after a five year wait. Nice scenery on the way round as well. I see your temperature gauge works as good as mine!!

 

Did you find any problems after you got back, oil leaks etc

 

Take it now you've got to save up for another tank of petrol so you can go round again

Well to sum up the first drive at speed.......... OH MY GOOD GOD WHAT A TREMENDOUS NOISE:wow::nut::shake::shake::shake: honest to god the whine in top gear is not too bad on the flat but as the speed drops off on the hills Christ it makes your ears bleed.......Although i'm sure it got better towards the end of the run out. I don't really think it has been in top gear propper at speed for about 10 years. I'm not too worried about the box failing it's just a tad er.......loud on the hills till you drop down into any other gear which is silent:undecided:

One thing that did bother me slightly was a sort of "ungle grungle gungle grungle grrr ga grrrr" that only manifests itself at speeds over 28mph between drive and overrun when your neither driving nor slowing down, Going over the crest of a large hill if you like. In fact it sounds very much like the Land rover 101 propshaft grumble.... Is this normall?....the shaft looks original and seems to be in good order and is well greased.

The general drive........

Well...its ok...The steering s nice but i need to adjust a drop arm ball joint stop a slight steering shimmy that occurs going flat out, The brakes have come back to life and it stops hard enough to evict the batteries from under the seat.

The gear shift is lovely and light and can be move with finger ant thumb ( OK i really need to practice just a tad more but i think i did ok for a beginner:red:)

Suspension is FIRM and the tyres had huge flat spots on but they went after 2 miles and being 12 ply seem quite forgiving on the big bumps.

 

And Finally on the the mighty Meadows........Well it's not so mighty:blush: It sounds fantastic and the exhaust was heard 2 miles away:whistle: It is a tad woeful on power and won't be rushed. We have some good hills here and we slowed up almost to the point of a down change However on the little track home it ran out of puff and had to hill start in 3rd:blush: It's also over fueling a bit too much so i will have to have a look at the pump, all that black smoke is just ££££££ going up for no benifit. Any way i'm off to watch my footage over and over:drive:

I put £90 and due to the over fueling half an hour of faffing around a home that little run of 6.5 miles cost about £7.50. About 4.5 to the gallon further runs and tuning and i'll keep you posted. I did thrash the arse off it all the way though so a more gentle approach might be more economical:cool2:

If you propshaft is as new, then the grumble is almost certainly worn splines on the gearbox output shaft, when it gets worse you get the top gear banshee hammer rattle, take it off clean with brake cleaner smear some Loctite 660 on it and refit, leave it for a few days and test.

Just been out and had a look at the book of words ( and pictures:)) and all it seems i have to do is remove the propshaft, undo flange nut "o" and draw off flange "N" with the tapped holes provided. Would i be right in thinking if the flange is baggy it should just pull off in my hand:undecided:

Just like on a 101 the flange nut comes slightly loose with wear, and tightening it will help for a while, with the prop off it is possible to feel some movement by grabbing it and turning back and forth, the movement may only be very slight but it maybe gets a lot worse when it heats up.

 

Simple job for a Scammell man of your caliber......I got the 50 ml size loctite and used most of it, the rest came in useful for other things as well, I would certainly recommend using it on the hub taper keys.

a meadows is the perfect training aid for gear chageing because no matter how many gears u go down the box the greedy little sod will allways want one more . and by then your at a standstill . just wait till u get the back body done and add a little more weight to the old girl

 

as for the noise i take it u havent got yourself a pair of ear defenders yet ? thats the only fix for that :-D allways drive with atleast one window open to let the noise out .

when u and scammell couming to get the other MIGHTY MEADOWS ? maybe you could legthen the bonnet and get them both in one infront of another ?

Have you calmed down from the euphoria of that first run yet? or are you still wandering around grinning :D:D:D

 

Had noticed the noises, on the footage, especially the howling in top gear, but didn't like to say anything in case it was normal for an aged explorer!! Hopefully it will be fairly easy to sort, you wouldn't want to go too far with that in your ear all the time.

 

Same with the fuel, not only is too much black smoke wasted petrol, it also attracts the Plod who start asking silly questions.

 

There's some narrow country lanes round by you, watched the films waiting for a tractor or something to come the other way. There didn't seem to be too many passing places for something as big as a Scammell

I'll have to wait for my finances to improve before i'm allowed to make any more large heavy scammell related purchaces:embarrassed: I have just turned the fueling down to stop the smoke and save a bit of extra cash but it should'nt affect the "performance" to much i hope. I don't mind changing gears it's fun. You'll have to get used to changing gears too with that huge donkey engine you've fitted. After its munched them all up and spat them out:D You know what they say the bigger the engine the smaller the pei$*:rofl:

 

When we going to see this frankinstein smushing together of classic British engineering and American pig iron on the road:D

The Explorer whine is a bit of an odd one really, some whine in top while others a pretty quiet. I,ve spoke to people who have spent a great deal of time and effort rebuilding boxes only to still have the bloomin whine. I'll buy some ear defenders and have a look at the propshaft flange . A s to passing places the Scammell is bigger than everything round here so they'll have to reverse back to the nearest turning / house /farm enterance. Also if you drive really fast in the middle of the road people panic and drive into the ditch thus making room to pass:cool2:

 

And no i am still wandering round smiling and watching my video over and over and over.......:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:drive::drive::drive:

well chuffed for you hope it all goes well in the future. Seems like big uphill neverending struggle but pays of in the end. More satisfying than watching tele and dreaming about doing something like it

I really want to take it out again but this bloomin weather is buggering my plans for a nice test run......I don't want any issues in the rain and wind:-( then try and get a farmer to tow me home..... Next big spend is a new battery to replace the tiny little car battery that goes fat when i hit the starter button along side the 110 amp lorry battery and some roadside assistance cover:)
