flyingfleasteve
Thanks Ron! This is what I suspected 🙈. Gutted!
welbike
What a bummer!!! I usually do the spoke stuff myself, and take many pictures of how it was before dissasembly, bought a cast iron truing stand at Beaulieu years ago for 50 quid, and it sure gets some use! Cheers, Lex
flyingfleasteve
Well after my setback I have now stripped the wheel back and removed the spindle, tyre and sprocket...it’s all packed up and ready to go back to the wheel builders 😔. Whilst I wait for the wheel to come back I have started threading my brake rods.....
monty_stubble
Hesitate to pose this again. But as I near the completion of one ML and start on the next (yes, really) I am still confused by the routing of the cable to the rear light. Ron's clips (see the other thread) is by far the neatest and most sensible (which I've used) but I keep seeing them with holes in the rear mudguard to route the cable through. Is this a later adaptation or were there some of both kinds? I seem to have been out of the loop for a long time as I was wooed away by a 1961 AJS. Ron
Monty I'm sure the clips are the official way it was done. I'll check my parts list later, but here is a factory picture and a bike in use. Ron
welbike
Clip taillamp cable to mudguard 4 pieces, Pt No. BML41 illustration No. 27, exactly the same as BSA and Nortons, can be bought repro from Draganflies (stainless, and no lettering) and original from John O Brien. They came in black and cad plated. the other things to hold the wiring to the frame was a brass long clip, 2 used. Cheers, Lex
Ron
This is them at Drags! Ron https://www.draganfly.co.uk/triumph-shop/twin-cylinder/product/13235-cable-clip-sold-each/category_pathway-
flyingfleasteve
That’s the clips I have gone for, from drags. They look the part!
Ron
Yes they are exactly right.....But no makers name. Ron
monty_stubble
I too have them. I guess the holes must be later mods.
welbike
I made a thing for my engraving machine to engrave the text, but stopped experimenting when I bought 150 originals. Lex
flyingfleasteve
So as I wait for the rear when to come back I am now on the hunt for a new rear chain, has anyone got any recommendations?
Ron
I've used this guy a couple of times since John of "The Chain Gang" died. Ron https://the-chain-man.co.uk/
flyingfleasteve
Thanks Ron. That’s great! Out of interest what sorts of brands/manufacturers would of been used originally? (For the chain) Steve
Ron
Reynold Chains comes to mind. Ron
monty_stubble
10 minutes ago, Ron said: Reynold Chains comes to mind. Ron Renold chains had a virtual monopoly in WW2. Motorcycle magazine advertisements at the time made this clear.
Ron
Sorry I used the spelling for "Reynolds Tube" Ron
monty_stubble
Doesn't look much like one.
Ron
I agree! Doesn't look much like anything apart from the artist has drawn the 'V' shape on the front of a Norton 16H mudguard. Ron
monty_stubble
Renolds bought the Coventry Chain Company pre-war but in WW2 they still operated as two companies but only apparently selling Renolds chain. Incidentaly, Coventry Chains made the drive chains for WW1 tanks.
monty_stubble
By WW2 Renolds seem to have bought everyone out, including these guys.
wdbikemad
Rear chain for the ML is the same measurements as the WD/RE Flea but a different length..........try Hitchcock's or Villiers Services.......they should be able to supply a suitable length of chain with joining/cranked half-links as necessary.............
